Someone sort of did that with a motorbike of mine once – he saw it where it shouldn’t have been and put an effing great lock around it and called the coppers. Top stuff.

100k here. I optimistically put semi-slicks on last weekend, and it’s hardly stopped raining since. They’re staying on (but I reserve the right to change my mind if it’s hammering down at 5am on sunday)

100mm full suss here, it’s hell on a hard tail if the clay’s set solid with hoofprints.

and has your diet hasn’t changed at all …

Indeed so. Hence agreeing with the ‘Move a bit more and eat a bit less’. Struggling to shift it’ of course means ‘Struggling to eat less’. Mrs flap_jack currently in kitchen making cake. I can’t disappoint her by not eating it, can I…

problem IME is when you stop doing the long rides, the weight comes back with extras.

3 years ago I rode to Rome. Started at 93kg, ended at 86kg – lost 7 kg in 2 weeks.

Now 100kg and struggling to shift it. Sadly, haven’t time to ride 100 miles a day…

Campsite at Le Buet is nice, quiet, and a scenic 15 train ride from Chamonix. Really good walking on that side too.

Each to their own but I never use gels. I stick it all in the energy drink at recommended dilution and keep sipping works for me.

To encourage the body to use fat I train fasted, can usually go about 3 hours before needing food, so if racing and sipping from the start I’m fine. Note, this works for me, you may be completely different.

It’s generally reckoned that, on average, you can digest about 240 cals glucose and 120 cals fructose an hour. You’ll be expending way more than that, so the rest has to come from body stores. So you need to eat well, straight after a bit of exercise, for a few days before to stuff your body’s stores.

    Whenever someone says

    “It’s not a race”

    one of my mates says

“what sort of race isn’t it ?”

look for something old. I had a Raleigh Montage that size in the ’80s, nice frame made of 501 throughout. Wish I’d never got rid of it.

IMO 3 is restrained. He didn’t start it, and as long as he continues to not start something, all is OK. If he starts something, then get worried.

    Finishing it is OK IMO.

last one just gone. but I am 2nd out of 80 on a road climb, and I am 3 stone overweight at present.

However, I’d rather have the beer that keeps the weight on than the KOM back…

is this for real ? whole point of your foot is to take the shock rather than transferring it into your back. This is like running on your heels (like joggers do).

If you go over it’s no different if it’s 100 feet or a thousand. The feeling of being ‘in the mountains’ is incredible in Chamonix.

Great fish and chips at the old Ventnor Pier. They fry what they’ve caught that day.

If you’re ever there for a traditional pint, then the Volanteer…

Ventnor’s cool. Except that my school has since burnt down !

Edit: Was that 18 miles each way or round trip? So 1hr 20 to do 9 or 18 miles?

18 each way. He’s a good medium distance runner, bought the bike (a Social Evolve) on the Cycle to Work scheme pretty much on a whim.

Also, he came south to north this morning (Watford to Luton). Big tail wind I suspect. Can’t wait for tomorrow morning.

It works – it’s what I’m running on two bikes. However, 8 and 9 speed chains aren’t the same, 9 speed are narrower.

Does anyone have a figure for the power loss suffered by a supposedly flexy frame like a PX carbon in comparison to, say, oldgit’s favoured Giant ?

IME, the more someone’s paid for a frame, the better it makes them go. Maybe it’s because their wallet is lighter…
