If you can cope with a 40 mins commute you could live in Berhamstead, which is a great town and has a thriving MTB club.

Steroid use sadly quite common in gyms IME. Checkout acne, overgrown chins and general bad attitude (‘roid rage) for confirmation. I know where I can get some and I wasn’t even looking for it.

If (as I just have) you look at page 1 of this thread then jump to the last page, you think ‘what the hell happened’.

I’ve not got the time at the moment to read the rest.

What the hell happened ? At the end of page 1 all you’re going to do is change the tyres !

Get a saddle that seems comfy to you without cycle shorts. The specialized BG ones work for me, but you need to try a few.

that’s rather close for a jokey quiz – I come from the Isle of Wight.

gatorskins magnificent puncture resistance but no grip. I’m careful as I really don’t like fixing punctures at night…

Andrew Whitely has made a living from sourdoughs. He’s Mr ‘Village Bakery’. His receipe worked for me. Richard Bertinet’s is very wasteful.

I thought the idea was specifically NOT to use added yeast, MrNutt…

Thanks. I hoping to get one the same size (it’s what I’d call ‘old-sized’) so no blanking plates with luck.

    – about 10mins start to annoying the neighbours

    is exactly what I want.

I did Lausanne to Martigny a couple of years ago, I found Lausanne to be one of the most unpleasant places I’ve ever cycled in. Good luck !

Another here who’s never strayed from the square taper path. Usually last 10 years in all sorts of awful conditions, and I’m over 100kg and yet to break one.

Thanks. I imagine the capacity with a 36 should be all right with a 34 front…unless someone knows different

Bloke at work commutes on one. Nearly every component has broken, but the frame is still looking good.

He is doing 35 miles a day, for which I don’t think it was designed, so I don’t blame the bike.

He also did the London sportive on it. He looked utterly nuked at the end…

always the rear, gets rattled to pieces. I’m of the ‘keeping the power on over pot-holes etc’ frame of mind and I weigh over 100kg, and I use narrow tyres pumped up v hard. It’s a testament to the strength of the Thorn frame that it’s entirely untroubled by this behaviour.

conversely, the ones on mrs flap_jack’s bike last forever.

Can’t imagine why you’d want to ride there, totally over-rated. Go to the Isle of Wight, much hillier and more scenic.

no thanks. one of the beauties of cycling is that, once built, you provide all the energy it needs.

I might relent if they were powered from a dynamo.

I would replace them straight away

    This.

I didn’t once, and a brake block went through the rim instantly locking the front. High speed faceplant.

    Sandman ! I’m sold. Gimme one now…

Actually perfect for what I’m thinking, 26 fatty for the mega, 700c for the marmotte.

Fun is where it’s at in my book. The race I want to win is the race to the biggest laugh. Don’t mind being last in either (or both).

I want to do rigid, as I’d like to do the Marmotte on the same bike (OK I’ll change the wheels). Megamotte !

We’re oak throughout. All doors and windows. We found that Danish Oil works a treat indoors, but you get the dreaded blue mould outside with it. Tung oil seems to be the answer, at least so far. Good luck.

As jimc above. On an old style BB I went from 108mm to 118mm to go from double to triple. Don’t know how that works in new money (i.e. new BBs) but I guess you need to fiddle with the shims.

I have one of those Altura ‘Night Vision’ ones. Boil in the bag hell. But well visible so I put up with it. Cutting the arms off sounds a very good idea.

If they’re like the bamboo socks I’ve got they will be warm but a bit sweaty. IMO not as good as merino or even top quality cool-max.

    Yes.

Exactly as you described. One kicked in this year half way through the Passportes ! Fortunately, was able to get to Morzine via road…

Flashes of light at the same time as a rapid eye movement set them off for me.

Passportes one caused by sudden reflection off snow coming doen to Les LInderets from the Pointe des Mossettes.

I’m finding these new bright LEDs on cars a real problem. And no drugs seem to help it once it’s going.

The guy has his own business as well as working for us and isn’t poor.

Was exactly the case with the guy I spoke to. He was very busy and didn’t realise that he could not get away with sometimes not washing due to lack of time…
