Cove Hustler might be worth a look at, for the age you are thinking of. MBR did a 4 bike test in 2007, with a Hustler, Epiphany, 5spot and Orange 5. The Hustler & 5 got 10/10, 5spot & Epiphany 8/10.

Wifes got a 1.9 A3 and I have a 2.0 Passat (both 06), apart from the extra power, the 2.0 is a lot more refined. No problems with either to comment on reliability so far.

currymad….Have you thought about an Alpine 160 ? I can’t comment on the Zesty or Blur, but I do own 2010 5 & 160 (both built-up from secondhand frames) The 5 is very good yes, The 160 is outstanding, not just on the downs, but also climbs very well too, even with 170 Lyriks.

Even if she wins the case, she still has to return the bag to you before Paypal release the held funds back to her account. If you do end up getting the bag back, readvertise with an honest description as you have above, good luck.

Some of the older Formulas had a plastic piston in the lever assembly, which over time swells and starts to stick ( Had this problem on an old set of K18’s) the replacement piston kit had a metal piston which sorted the problem 8)

Hi Raindog, I’ve got a med (18″) Alpine 160 and frequent Llandegla on average twice a week, but will struggle to make it on Sat. due to shift work. Maybe able to make Sunday. email in profile, will do my best to help out.

P.S. If I don’t manage to get your mate a test ride, just tell him to buy one anyway…. He won’t be dissapointed 😉

Tried the pump-up garden type, cheap, but not great. Then got a brand new Dirtworker off ebay for £20, great bit of kit. Enough power to remove most crap, but not too much as to get into bearings (at least none of mine seem to have suffered yet) 8)

The Nuke Proof & Superstar pedals are made by HT components and supplied even cheaper by Ready To Ride Cycles, and if your lucky (like me) they will send you the Ti axeled versions even though I only paid for the steel axeled ones 😉

You can’t go wrong with a Hope Hoop/Stans Flow rim combo for what you intend to ride. Its not worth building your own when you can get one built for £150ish. They also work great tubeless.

I can only comment on the Hustler out of those two, which I rate as one of the best bikes I have owned. Also owned a 5spot (not unlike the El Ciclon) which although good, never gave me the same buzz as the Hustler. If I was to score them, 5spot 8/10, Hustler 10/10 8)

Quote “only neglect will kill it off” its not a FIT AND FORGET item. It will require regular stripping & lubing. Most BB failures are a result of poor seals & inadequte lube, not poor bearings 😉

Not done any green laneing for about 5 years, so can only give my opinion from then………1st bike, KLX 250 = underpowered, unreliable, uninspiring to ride. 2nd bike = Yam WR400, Overpowered, Poor (ba5tard to get it right) starting, bit heavy, stalled very easy when going slow, decent handling. 3rd bike, KTM EXC 520, Bloody Hell What a Beast, everything good appart from TOOOO MUCH POWER. 4th bike KTM EXC 400, WOW Perfect, Easy starting, both electric and kick, Power and delivery spot-on, 6spd which make a huge difference on the road bits, light for a 400, never stalled, could also do 90+ on forest tracks . Last bike, Honda CRF 250X, Very light, great handling, BUT..only 5 gears, no torque &and stalled too easy…………..KTM EXC 400 By far the best.

For those still trying to get a copy of issue #1, Tweeks Cycles have them in stock £9 post free (just got mine, very nice it is too, more of a book than a mag.) Wiggle also have them in stock for £9.50 posted ( even though the cover price is £9, they quote RRP as £10, and then they let you have 5% off !? )

I used to sell watch catalogues, ie: Breiltling, TAG, Jaeger etc., the type you could get free from a Jeweller. Best price I got was £41 for a Breitling one, also got great feedback for it too.. 😉

Not read all of the above, but after 33 years of driving and 50+ cars, I have learnt not to skimp on tyres, after all they are the only contact your vehicle has with the ground! Braking, cornering, power transfer etc.

You may be able to drive around the inadequacies (did I spell that right ?) of a cheap tyre, but in an emergency STOP! you don’t get that option !!!!

Owned a 2005 HL 5spot for about 6 mths, and loved it, then I tried a Cove Hustler….WOW! far more confidence inspiring and FUN than the 5spot, rear ride quality was more refined than the 5spot, mainly due to the Turner bushes creating a noticable stiction to the back suspension action. Steering, although a smidgen slacker, was more possitive, this may be down to the more sustantial tubing around the Hustlers headtube (both bike were on Pikes).

Cove got it so right with the Hustler, that the current bike still has the same geometry as a 2006 one.

Alloy pistons tend to corrode and stick, they also transfer a lot of the disc/pad heat to the fluid. The later Hope Phenolic (ceramic I think) pistons won’t corrode or transfer as much heat to the fluid 😉

Nano’s here too, but from here http://www.readytoridecycles.co.uk/ht-components-magnesium-mn06ss-nano-flat-pedal-277-p.asp

Made by HT Components in the same factory that make Superstar and Nuke Proof pedals (as far as I’m aware). Cheaper than Superstar, and FAR cheaper than Nuke Proof 😉
