This may sound a bit ridiculous and it may just have been a coincidence. However my friend has this problem and i found that he had pretty much just over tightened every screw/bolt on the shifters. Loosened them slightly and things seemed to ease a little. As i said, couldve just been a fluke.

new cables is also a good shout as dirt grime etc inside the outters would cause stickyness 🙂

It makes me smile to know that the STW'ers are a bunch of good eggs really. I have fortunately very little experience i can share or any advice. I just want to add another stone of good luck to the mountain of support given already…. good luck & stay strong Mark, and Meg.

I am pretty much in the same boat, but im off to the Swiss alps soon. im going to try a slightly different set up (and change it when im there if it doesnt work). Im using a compact front chainset, long cage rear mech and an xtr mtb cassette to get the gear ratios. im gonna go for it on the climbs and rest on the downhills. also the thought of a cold beer lake side when i get back will keep me going…. 😀

Use a pure soap cleaner (nikwax sponge applicator) to remove any grime, dirt, gunk etc etc. Dont artificially dry them using a hair-dryer or next to a radiator. will dry out leather even more. let them dry naturally in a utility room/airing cupboard. then get hold of a brown tinted brasher leather conditioner (not only does it condition the leather it also waterproofs it. made using the same stuff as grangers leather conditioner). preferably use you hand and work a small amount into the leather as the heat from your hand makes the cream penetrate deeper into the leather. leave over night and apply a little more. i would suggest wearing them around the house to stretch out and flex the leather again (especially after such a long time). the leather should hopefully be ok after this…..
