I was there, fantastic. Really enjoyed some of the skiing films despite never having tried it myself. “The Massive” especially.

A marathon isn’t boring if you train hard and actually “race” rather than just aiming to finish. Try and get a good finishing position within your age group, that would be a good challenge.

Also, have you considered trail/fell races? Look at the calendar on

    http://fellrunner.org.uk/

    or how about:

    ?

If it has to be walking then maybe:

Caught them at Glastonbury in 2007 and thought they were bo-ring. In their defence it was pissing it down with rain and conditions under (well, over) foot were possibly akin to the Somme, so i wasn’t in the most receptive mood.

Tons of snow-based crashes here too. Mega fun though – as long as you ditched the bike far enough away it was like landing on a mattress.

Mercian are good bikes. Look how much the new ones cost on their website!

U2 are playing Live aid and inbetween songs Bono starts solomnly clapping, pronouncing “every time i clap my hands, a child in Africa starves to death”.

A wag in the audience shouts “stop f***ing clapping then!”.

People will pay an insane amount for bikes like:

And this has driven up the prices of not as nice Kleins to pretty ludicrous levels too.

Oh right, sorry. I always just used the 8 prong tool for that side on mine because i had one handy – i guess i never looked in detail.

    EDIT: so there is:

This is a really long thread for a very simple answer. You were right in your first post – you need both tools.

    Here is a picture:

That’s what i needed when i did my ultegra octalink one a couple of months ago (haven’t looked but i assume the bbt-18 is an 8 pronged jobby).

I couldn’t be bothered to watch it to the end, think that says enough really.

And i’m not a fixed gear hater before you dismiss my opinion either. Here’s a video i enjoyed rather more:

My experience with Lidl/Aldi cycling kit is that the zips are sh1t and the shorts/leggings are tailored for a completely non-cyclist body shape (too baggy around the waist but horrendously tight around the thighs).

I can’t remember it well enough to find, but there’s one incredibly sad one about Summer where she doesn’t make a single appearance, not even in the final frame.

I also really like the Edward Hopper Nighthawks and the “There’s an art… to mountain biking” Damien Hurst pastiches.

finbar – if she is doing triathlons then surely she will be in an aero tuck most of the time, so that’s exactly what she wants. Why should she buy a bike which is better for some other theoretical thing which she won’t actually be doing?

Because riding in an aero tuck – properly – is bloody hard work. It requires a lot of flexibility, different muscle strengths to regular cycling position (the neck and back can get particularly sore), and unless you’re only ever riding on pancake flat roads it will probably be less efficient than a regular road position anyway. Tri bikes just aren’t that suitable for beginners.

Also if someone only has one bike, a road one (perhaps with clip on aerobars) would be much more versatile – most triathletes will keep their tri bikes for races and key workouts only, and ride a regular road bike the rest of the time.

Does it ever stop hurting and become enjoyable? [:)]

Are the two mutually exclusive? ;-)

Running is only boring when you’re doing it slowly. Clipping along at sub 6 min pace is actually quite exciting!

Don’t let her buy a triathlon-specific bike (aero bars, funny angles and all that jazz) – unless you’re riding in an aero tuck 80-90% of the time then a normal road bike will probably be faster, and a hell of a lot easier to handle too.

Oh, and you could do worse than direct her to tritalk.co.uk – an extremely friendly bunch and very patient with noob questions.

I seem to remember someone on here had a Giant frame done by a mate that works at a TVR garage – it looked quite good…

    This one?

I sort of agree about their not being enough surface area to really get the full effect. In the sunshine it looked amazing though (never took any pics unfortunately).

I’d say average, definitely not small.

MM – i agree with you, to some extent. I’d be going for a minimalist shoe though, either a racing flat or something like the repro Nikes/Pumas/Asics that size? sell. Modern shoes regardless of price almost universally have ‘stacked’ heels (i.e. that are very high relative to the forefoot) which encourages you to land on your heel. Natural (barefoot) running forces you to land on your midfoot/forefoot. It’s only when you’re heelstriking that pronation becomes an issue.

Increase your mileage gradually and let your feet build up some strength.

(oh, and google Pose method or Chi running for more info.)

Scoping is so over. I’d be, like, peeping the fresh trailage out instead. Well, really i’d prolly just shred it straight up, but i appreciate not everyone is as hesh as me.

I don’t see how a cheap bike is going to make you ride significantly slower (assuming you’ll be riding on fairly tame terrain at least).

EDIT: too slow, sorry for the echo. Comment still stands though.

TBH i’d probably go and use the bikeradar classifieds if there was a charge on here (though i have donated a little bit by paypal).
