I used to be 20 stone, also have RhA slowly eating my hands away. I commute 12 miles each way about 3 times a week on a good week. In 2 years I have lost 4 stone and the arthritis doesn’t seem to be holding me back too much (pain is relative after all).
My advice is to build up slowly. Don’t let the first few commutes put you off, it will not be pleasant at first, but after a few rides it will get easier, even quite fun.
I use 3 different routes to work to keep it interesting (and to avoid/add hills depending on how I feel). Do you have a shower at work?

I live in Woodhouse eaves and ride around here a bit. Given the filthy looks I get from people when riding kosher trails (let alone the cheeky stuff) I do not hold out a lot of hope. Raising the profile risks creating a target and, knowing the local Gestapo, would only embolden the anti-cycling bunch.
I’m with dannyh, keeping a low profile, although crap, is probably the only realistic choice. I would, however, love to be proven wrong…

It’s the same theory as Trident, spend a shed load of money on something you assume your enemy is terrified of (in this case your own people) that you have no intention of ever using in anger.

I have the HP 11. Love it.
As long as you’re happy using cloud storage and don’t want to store anything on it, it’s bang on. It does everything I want to it to (net browsing, word docs, PowerPoint, email and youtubing).
For £200 you will not get better (unless you want to go second hand).

Any “A” series engine, usually found in minis and older metros. Simple, beautiful and in many ways, the grandfather of most modern engines.

It won’t be long before people start suing the met office for not predicting floods…
Seriously, what makes people think that their kids are not their responsibility?

I kinda get what you’re saying about us making a mess of the environment on bridleways and such, I guess I’m lucky that it’s not too big a problem round my way. Most of the bridleways round here are rutted up by the horses.

Also, weren’t you complaining about braking bumps at a trail centre?

    fin25

But why are FS bikes to blame?

    fin25

Seriously OP, please explain why FS bikes are so guilty of braking bumps, the suspense is killing me!

Or, “self righteous, easily offended, will give this up for golf soon” trails.

Maybe some of you should try centre parcs, their trails are so smooth its as if they’re made of tarmac…

May I suggest you take up road riding, as anyone offended by braking bumps probably isn’t cut out for mountain biking. Plus, I don’t understand why FS bikes are more of a problem? I ride a hardtail 29er, weigh 16 stone and thrash around like a fish on a barbeque, so am probably responsible for a lot more trail “damage” than a ten stone grasshopper on a carbon FS bike.
More ruts and bumps = more fun.

Wheels, lighter wheels make a huge difference, especially on a 29er. Much as it’s nice having a dropper post, you’ll be much happier in the long run upgrading the wheels.

I hate cushions, my wife used to buy loads of them, until the dogs decided they really liked them.
    Now we have no cushions…

It does seem a bit thick, but for £20 I have no complaints (although I haven’t fitted it yet).

Which one have you got? I got the 30t one this morning. Because of it being smaller, it has threaded bolt holes cut into the ring itself. They do have a bit of a lip on the outer edge, presumably to add strength and improve the chainline.

Pre-ordered a ringmaster last Wednesday, when there was a 3-5 day wait on stock. Given the amount of stick On-One get on here, was expecting to wait a while. Got it this morning, correct and intact… :D

I work for the local council, who have just put us through an organisational review. As part of the review, I was nominated by my colleagues as a representative in the consultation process.
On four separate occasions, the HR manager for our department got her facts completely wrong regarding simple points of employment legislation and contractual details. This would have been funny if management hadn’t followed her down the rabbit hole.
I am now in a situation where, after the end of the consultation, the implementation of the business case was, according to my line manager, due to roll out in July. As part of my existing contract, I received an incremental pay rise in April and carried out my duties as before.
Then, on the day before payday in May, all staff received a letter via email (dated 22nd May) informing us that we had been assimilated into our new roles on 1st April, thus wiping out and deducting from May’s pay my incremental pay rise from April onwards.
So, for the last two months I have been working to a job description and contract that no longer exists, taking on far more responsibilities than my new, post review job description requires of me, all without my knowledge or consent.

HR is like an axe, bloody useful, but bloody terrifying when wielded by maniacs…

Do what I did, check, grease and tighten everything, swap your pedals to see if it’s them, check the spokes are tight and your seatpost is greased. Only when you are sure you have checked everything three times over is it time to admit defeat.

Or you could avoid all that faffing and just replace the BB…

I used to live with a vegan guy. I don’t know whether it was just him, but veganism looked like quite a difficult choice, what with all the research as to what he can eat and drink, going to far away shops to get the best stuff and keeping his discipline in the face of so many easier choices. I genuinely admire someone who has made the choice to be vegan, it is clearly not the easy option.
Be honest with yourselves, can a child really make such a choice?
Do they really understand their choice?
Is it fair for any child to live with such pressures, especially when we live in a society already obsessed with putting pressure on kids?

    Just saying like…

Fill the bath with water, especially if your bath is plastic. This ensures the gap for the silicone is at it’s widest, so you won’t expose gaps the first time you fill the bath.

As long as the Bolt Circle Diameter (BCD) matches between cranks and chainring (both SLX and almost all narrow/wide chainrings are 104mm) and you use appropriate bolts to keep the chainline happy, no problem at all.

Talk to your wife, tell her how you feel and see where it goes. Whether or not your marriage is over, honesty at this point will save a lot of pain down the line, for you, your wife and your kids.
Whatever happens, if you are always honest with yourself and the ones you love, you all have a better chance of finding happiness.
Plus, there’s nothing better than filling your boots guilt-free!
