+1 for Fast After 50, dad got himself a copy last year and took quite a few ideas from it.

I’m often that guy in shorts and a tshirt when everyone else is wrapped- but with big massive winter gloves It’s the raincoat-in-summer guys I can’t comprehend at all, you can be sweltering in a light riding top and then you see people wearing a binbag.

Your temperature sensors are faulty, it never gets sweltering in Scotland, it only actually gets vaguely warm 2-3 days a year!

Not only that, but his elbows are bent. Perhaps needs to replace the bars on his crit bike with a horsey neck.

I just use the cheapest slick tyre money can buy. Lasts ages too

+1 I’m using an old vittoria rubino that I got for £10 for training outdoors, but then damaged the sidewall first ride.

Round here it’s missing loads that get used all the time.

If I was humping the boonies at a fair latitude for the best part of a week I’d not want to rely on the patchiness of OSM. YMMV.Not the best (although far from terrible) around here either. I know one path on the map runs directly into the middle of a patch of gorse bushes and then stops, and another has a hub deep ‘puddle’ that has to be at least 100m long even in the middle of summer.
Loads of paths not on the maps at all – even the more detailed ‘Explorer’ versions

Sounds like Nath is taking it a step further and going full carb ban (possibly for medical as well as performance) reasons. In theory once adapted he shouldn’t see much change to his FTP as he just becomes much better adapted to using fat as a fuel. I’m a bit sceptical how it’ll work out in the 1-15min power range.

(I’m guessing that a 10 mile fasted commute 2-3 mornings a week would be worthless in this respect ? )

It’s certainly not going to hurt, but ideally would want to be longer and more steady than the typical commute I think.

I took small steps in this direction last year (i need to be careful not to cut calorie intake too much as i’m prone to weight loss). No carbs on my easier rides up to 2hrs, and ‘low’ (100-150kcal/hr) carb for easy rides in the 2-5hr range.
It certainly seemed to make a positive impact on my endurance (and by extension cruising speed).

Try and find your trackpad in control panel and disable it if possible. Then reboot and try a mouse again.

What’s the ultimate intention in Nath’s plan, weight loss or some kind of power gain ?

Presumably nobody races in that sort of state, right, so what happens when you glug carbs for racing ?Actually people do race like that, but generally for much longer events.
Someone can correct me if i’m wrong, but I think for shorter events where you are going to need big carb powered bursts you do the bulk of your training in your new fat burning state which forces the adaptations to use fat as fuel, and then you switch back to high carbs a couple of weeks before a target event.

    Try googling periodised nutrition.

I think if I had £150k worth of bikes in vans, I would book them in a secure hotel car park or pay a security chap overnight…

    You’d certainly do something.

They don’t seem to have made any effort at all, not even parking them right up against each other.

Definitely think something smells a bit – fair amount of manpower and transport to shift that much kit, and conveniently not captured on the CCTV.

it doesnt get “muddy” in the conventional sense – just a bit of spray from the puddles but im not made of sugar.

Certainly was when I rode it – roughly rim depth with 2.4 tyres on.

theres no need to be braking anyway

In which case a liberal coating of mud will help to cover the evidence of any code brown moments!

Maybe it drains quickly and you have to catch it just at the wrong time for it to be proper muddy?
Agree that Carls and ZoB are just fine in the wet, and overall linking the 3 together are great and could ideally form part of a 2nd waymarked red route

There’s maybe actually a gap in the market for what the OP is after.
There’s plenty of examples/blogs out there where people have put in the effort and combined XYZ to make something, but no off the shelf kits.

For example, I imagine a kit with everything you need to ‘build’ a beaglebone into a childproof android tablet would be quite nice.

Once the cost/benefit ratio stops working people won’t bother mining any more and then where will we be?

You’ll be a virtual millionaire sitting on a mountain of bitcoin that you can’t actually use because there are no machines running to process the transaction?

@bails has done it the same way as the link I provided.

Looking at the sheet you posted, it seems a perfect candidate for this:

I would create an array with 2 axis category and grade. Then complete the table

Then use the following formula to find the value at the right intersection of grade and category

    =INDEX(data,MATCH(val,rows,1),MATCH(val,columns,1))

I would have guessed that overall it would have been the same – you’d have less in winter but more in summer…?

Although it might be sunlight that you actually want, i.e. when you’re awakeOverall, I suspect you are right about daylight, its clear blue skies and that yellow ball in the sky that would be nice instead of just variations of grey.

Think VLOOKUP will just provide a more elegant version of what OP already has, but can’t lookup when there are two input variables (category and grade)?

Edit:Actually, VLOOKUP is half the answer.
OP, think this link offers some solutions to your problem:

VLOOKUP on Two or More Criteria Columns

You can easily get a semi-alright to alright double bedroom in a shared house in a nice part of north London (Harringey, for example) for £600 – 650 a month.

    8O
It’s like a whole different economy.

    Back on topic:
Quick bit of guesstimate maths based on the above rental and a 37hr week suggests you’ll be making ~£7.5k/yr more(after tax), but ~£7.5k will be eaten up in rent.
So more or less cost neutral, maybe a little worse off in London due to generally higher prices. So I guess not really anything to lose by trying it.

It’s warmer and drier down here

May sound totally daft, but it’s not the money or the social life that could potentially draw me south, but an extra 2-300hrs of sunlight a year, and actually being warm in the summer would be welcome.

So I would only go tubeless if the ride quality at the same pressures was better…. Is it? Having come from road I know that tubs ‘feel’ better than clinchers, is it a similar difference?

Yes, the ride quality is better at the same pressure – and noticeably faster too as a decent chunk of rolling resistance when running at low pressure is friction between the tyre/tube.

If it’s reds then Carl’s Lane, Ho Chi Min, Zoom or Bust and round to Dave’s Trail. Repeat as time-able. All on Trailforks.

Wouldn’t really recommend Ho Chi Min in the wet – few inches of mud and roots galore – i’d also suggest its rather more black than red in the wet too.

Plus i can’t get air so it highlights my own inadequacies…

Surely you jest. Even a lycra wearing card carrying mincer like me can get air on Spooky

Elise Christie (speed skating): The Scot won a hat-trick of gold medals – including the overall title – and a single bronze at March’s World Championships.

Never heard of her, but 3 gold medals at a World champs seems pretty good.

Can’t vote for a kenyan, and the only thing we can say for sure about Hamilton this year is that he was better than his team mate, and winning a race of two isn’t that impressive.

    Col du Mont Cenis

Nothing that spectacular on the climb up from the French side.
I do remember nearing the top and turning into the most brutal headwind ever. You know its bad when you are being drafted by a runner……
Cafe at the top offers a menu which seems to be sponsored by the cheese industry.
Descent down to Susa is epic. Drops 5000ft – Strava has me at 30mph for 30mins :)

how long does the red take? at an average pace?

Very much dependant on how fast you climb.
Allow 2hrs, it probably won’t take that long though.

Grr, random logout ate my reply – will try again.

    Take the FS imo.
For me the HT is faster, but the FS is more fun.
Think there’s some bits that are just bumpy enough to beat you up a little, and really have to concentrate, whereas on a FS you can relax and enjoy the ride more. Possibly a larger rider on a long travel HT might not find it as bad.

The blue is superb – difficulty/features scale well with speed, so better riders can still enjoy themselves but going faster.

Red is one of the easier reds i’ve ridden.
Take the shortcut (Pie-run?) as it cuts out a couple of km of meh.

    I prefer the 800 to the 810 and 820.
The 820 has to get a special mention for its spectacularly useless rain operated touch screen.

    – leave it at the starting value for the duration

    That one!
Unless you are horrendously out of shape to start with its very unlikely you’ll see enough gains over a 10 week period that you’ll move outwith the ‘zone’ you are aiming at.
For example Sweetspot is 88-94% FTP, if you are working in the top half of that at the start of the block you are very likely to still be working in lower part by the end of the block.

where has this cash come from? How is it suddenly available?

He’s got whatever the interest payments on £8.4bn would have been to play with. Although very much agree with the sentiment, it would be nice if budgets gave more detail on the impact it has in the overall balance sheet.

Annual borrowing £49.9bn this year, £8.4bn lower than forecast in March

They do say that Endura are very good to deal with for warranty issues.

Possibly if you are a bike shop/distributor. Wasn’t quite so smooth contacting them directly for my charity ride. Stuff got sorted no questions asked, but took a bit of chasing and communication wasn’t great.
On the positive side, of the 100’s of items we ordered as a group, I think the only issues were with a few items with the wrong size labels in.
