    Tough one.
Castelli would be ‘skinny’ enough, but not by the time you went up to size L/XL to account for the leg length needed.

Size S leg warmers and long socks may be about the best solution you are going to get.

Had it at 20k miles on my 2006 Civic – thought it was actually supposed to be resolved by 2009, but maybe didn’t get resolved on CRV until later.

Re this, it’s not a major faff to pause half an hour into the ride to remove or add a layer if you don’t get it quite right from the off

Indeed its not – in winter conditions i’m stopping every half hour to water the trees anyway

Drumlanrig Challenge is excellent – used to sell out pretty much on the day entries opened though – not sure if this is still the case.
Trossachs Ton was dire this year – signage issues, worst feed stations i’ve seen, and i’d have ridden my 29er if i’d known the state of the road surfaces.

My vote would be for the ochil hills sportive:

Makes F all difference without the right tyres.

    This is so true.
The year with the epic snow dad and I had to help a chap who had got his 4WD mazda 6 wedged sideways across the road – couldn’t get enough traction to move more than an inch or two forward/back.

Gore Power windstoppers are great (I bought a second pair) down to around -1°C, and then wear them with the gore liner for lower temps.

Only problem is they seem to be out of stock everywhere apart from the gore website, so maybe discontinued?

    my commute was pretty good.
windscreen didnt take too much scraping, roads weren’t too frozen, and not that much traffic so made it in a few mins early to accumulate some positive flexi-balance.

Side note: One for the Edinburgh commuters.
I was in Edinburgh for a training course the other day – loads of bikes on the road, but roughly a third didn’t have lights, and another third had lights you could only see from 2m away – is this normal, and do they all have some sort of death-wish?

Its come up on a couple of threads, but it seems damp is usually caused by people in the houses rather than something to do with the houses themselves.
You can do simple things to help.

Close bathroom door and open window after showers/baths
Close kitchen door (and open window if necessary) whilst cooking
If you dry laundry indoors, dehumidifier in that room.
Dehumidifier in room with damp spot

If that ruins your day, you have an attitude problem. I used to have one too.

    Maybe I do.
I personally find deliberately driving round disrupting everyone elses day by delaying them to be in violation of the “don’t be a dick” rule.
In a place with very little traffic on the roads, if you are getting 10+ cars bottled up behind you, you are doing something wrong. When busses, tractors and cement mixers start catching you up its time to hand back your license.

You guys all need to move north and have a more relaxing driving experience.
Biggest trouble I ever have as a driver is lack of overtaking spots for the elderly folk in their small red (why are they always red?) cars with nothing better to do than trundle around at 35-40mph ruining everyone elses day.

So I just stumbled across this little nugget of joy:

the Bitcoin network is consuming power at an annual rate of 32TWh—about as much as Denmark.

    I find this quite disturbing

The new oscilloscope at work decodes serial data for me – no more manually decoding messages 1 bit at a time :-)

Google maps travel planning is pretty cool too – tell it where/when you want to go, and it’ll not only give you directions by car, but can now link up public transport routes and provides links to the service providers for booking tickets

1.) Xking, Ron, XR2 and Barzo all very similar, and all cope better than you’d expect with mixed conditions. A proper mud/soft conditions tyre is never going to cope well on trail centre hardpack. Not ideal in proper muddy conditions, but that’s the compromise you make for nice rolling speed.

2.) Not a parent myself, and maybe i’d have a different outlook if I was, but no kneepads for XC racing and the bulk of training – only if specifically targeting a session working on technical skills/features.

3.) Some clip on mudguards – make winter XC far more pleasant.
Some water repellent tights/leg warmers (watching muddy puddles bead on the surface never gets old).
Camelbak with spares and mini first aid kit for training.
Phone to call the parent taxi when you’re cold, wet and have just gone OTB for the 3rd time in 15mins.
Waterproof shell to wear whilst waiting for the parent taxi to arrive

How much weaker is the pound now?

That doesn’t help for sure, but there were significant price hikes before the brexit fiasco. But brexit related or not, much higher prices relative to spending power is going to explain why both LBS and online are both finding things hard.

I wish I could explain what is happening right now in the bike industry

Hyper inflation of prices over the last 3-4yrs + squeeze on consumers disposable income = less likely to be making purchases.

As an example, when I was looking for my first proper MTB race bike in 2012, I picked up a BMC Teamelite dripping in top end kit discounted from £3kRRP. Roll the clock forward to 2017 and the equivalent bike in the range now has £3.3kRRP, and is wearing SLX, heavier wheels and a performance series fork.

Add to that a new hub width or wheel size every year to make people unable to upgrade older kit, and unsure about how futureproof any new kit will be, and its a miracle anyone is buying anything.

They’re hard to find but the mighty Specialized Captain Control 2.2 on the back

Do they actually still make them? I was under the impression they were replaced by the Ground Control.

I’m liking my Hans Damph up front and a rock razor on the back. It’s surprisingly ok in muddy conditions and quick rolling.

    No! FFS!

I run that combo on my trail bike – I like it – but the only way you could describe it as ‘quick rolling’ is if you compared it to some sort of maxxis velcro tyre.

Same goes for the DHR/MinionSS combo

    fifeandy

‘Aggressive’ and a preference for low rolling resistance don’t tend to go together.
XKings, Rons and XR2’s are all fast and work across a range of conditions.

I got a kit and did a couple of bleeds.
Even made a decent job of it.
Then I discovered LBS only charge £10 to do it.
I’ll not be doing it myself any more :D

Yep, its terrible, often expensive, and never goes where you actually need to go. I tend to have to use it once a year or so, and every time am reminded why i dislike it so much.

Train the other morning for example didn’t have its heating on despite being 1°C outside, it was noisy and the seats uncomfortable and non too clean – well worth £25….

+1 for free version of visual studio.
C# is pretty easy to pick up, and windows forms very quick and intuitive to develop.
Edit: There’s also millions of C# examples out there, so you can almost certainly find several examples of anything you may want to do.

If you are deploying to customers PC’s which won’t necessarily up to date i’d build for .NET 4.0 (Client profile), then you should just be able to copy your .exe across and not worry about having to update .NET

Pretty much non existent right now.
Always planned to take September off, but picked up a knee injury that has lingered on a bit (seems almost better now), but also just didn’t feel the need to bike.
I’ve booked myself a holiday in the Dolomites next September, so I will have to get on the bike and start training after christmas, but not really that urgent.
Tried a few easy spins on the turbo (didn’t want to risk setting the knee back with intensity), but just didn’t have enthusiasm, so i’m just giving myself another few weeks just doing other stuff rather than force myself.

Think overall I just did too many grim rides this year and it wore me down mentally. 5 days a week from Nov16-Aug17 and only actually wore a summer jersey 5 times, of which two of those turned out to be over optimistic.

Seen a fair few builds with a log burner so it can be done

Many things can be done – that doesn’t mean they should be.
