I bought a twin 18v Makita one last year purely as I already had lots of batteries for tools already.. it’s working well and so much nicer than the crap Flymo it replaced.

I let my sub for singletrack expire.. after quite a few years as a paid up member due to the ongoing issues with cookies and never ending logouts. It was so annoying that I was visiting less and less. Sorry web team but your own ineptitude, and I’m sorry to be rude, but it is that, is killing the site for users.

No other web forum has these ongoing issues.

Cheapest place I found was oddly my vw main dealer. Had the car in for a fault and they had a standard price of (I think) £1 a litre. It was certainly much cheaper than halfords when I compared.

Had similar stuff made for roofs where access was needed over duckwork or other such plant. Plenty of companies will make that kind of thing. Have a search for “permanent roof ladder” and a few come up..

Popup on every page on Chrome (android mobile) and desktop (chrome, win10). Site is completely unusable.

I’ll be cancelling my sub. This is ridiculous.

I bought a one from the Battery Shop Sussex at the end of 2020.. its been fine and while I haven’t tested the run time I’d say it’s on par with the original.

I was happy enough I bought one for my father in law when his v6 died this year.

To echo advice above, check the thermostat isn’t at fault. They are in my experience more unreliable and can be changed without any messing around. Check for continuity across the terminals (with it disconnected) – if nothing then it’s duff.

Always worth looking for Amazon deals for Office 365 subs as as Phil mentions above they can be used to extend your licence rather than start a new one. I picked up 15 months + McAfee (which i won’t use) for under 50 quid in the Boxing day sale thing last week. You can share the 6 licences too if you don’t need them all, so my Dad uses one of them for his account.

There’s loads of Bosch stuff in Screwfix.. What makes you think they’ve shunned it?

Could I also suggest.. dare I say it, bing maps? Whilst I’m usually a google maps user bing allows you to use an OS maps layer as an option. Can’t use it from an android smart phone though, would have to be desktop. Not sure you can “search” for the grid.. but it’s easy enough to find it the same way you would on a paper map.

109 quid gets you a basic dewalt XR 18v drill and a couple of small batteries. That will be fine and there’s any number of bare tools you can add on in future.. however tools such as angle grinders are pretty heavy on batteries so you may find you’d need to buy bigger batteries at a later date..

Bosch also an option at similar price point.

Or.. put aside tool snobbery and go for the Screwfix own brand Erbauer which are reported to be fine.. Smaller range of tools but they cover all the basics. 90quid gets you one with a 4ah battery.. and the drill is brushless which generally gives more power and longer run time.

Well average price for a new install is £1,600 according to check a trade.. which won’t include the consumer unit and everything beyond..

    A drum of 50m of 6mm SWA is £150.00.

So unless your house is a long way from the garage it’s going to be considerably cheaper to just put a new feed from the house.

Thanks all.. was really wondering if the texture of the planks would have to go.. but I guess that will depend on the sander type, size of pads or whatever.

ajc: thanks for the info. It is solid oak, I had to take up a section and relay it in the hall as they’d left insufficient expansion space around the stairs and where it abuts the stone floor in the kitchen. I think if I ever replace the whole thing I’d go with an engineered floor to reduce those issues.

Certainly looks like it’s a job for the summer when I can leave the doors open onto the desk (and probably put most of the furniture out there too!)

Are the bulbs themselves dimmable? From past experience some that claim to be dimmable are still a pain in the arse. Had issues with LAP bulbs and switched to Philips which have been bomb proof for years.

Varilight v pro dimmers work well and can be changed between modes to suit different bulb types.

1200ish all in for sectional up and over powered door. Solent, (Hampshire) area few years ago. Did a top job, insulated and has made a real difference to the garage. think I hit a special offer with the supplier (horman/garadoor) so was I think a pretty decent quote.

Have they had any recent issues? There was an issue with 2009 year metas cracking.. mine was one of them, they replaced the frame and I rode the replacement (hard) until last year when I sold it.

Your final ring circuit (or spur) would just use one of the phases. You could have different circuits spread over different phases. You’d need a 3 phase distribution board though.

Each phase is like a single 230v supply, but the voltage waveform is out of phase with the other two..

It’s either a high mileage small van, or a clocked very high mileage small van.

Would seem almost too blatant to be the latter? But as mentioned above it will depend on owners.. why the big change in yearly mileage?

FF on Android now has the browser bar at the bottom

This can be changed easily.. but I agree it is annoying when developers move these things as a default.

Click the 3 dots – settings / customise / toolbar

From memory.. (haven’t lived close enough to make the trip for a while now) Mabie was always the preference. The last section of Ae was always a laugh but Mabie had more consistent smiles around the loop..

Much higher chance of massive accident at Ae.. The “last run before home” issue.. Had to walk a friend off the hill with two broken arms many moons ago!

The correct answer is “another loop of Kirroughtree” as it was always my favourite.

Some good advise above.. I dived in this summer as it was something i’d been trying to get around to for years, having been AutoCAD only for just about 20 years.

Did a quick linkedin learning tutorial over a day and that got me as far as modelling my own house and a bit more googling and YouTube i managed to do a fairly decent model of one of our Uni buildings.

Once you get the idea that you’re not just drawing a line, you’re setting up how the wall is built, thickness, materials etc and then placing them in the model – then it becomes less scary.

    Yes… and no.

You can swap them, but the connectors are different. Mains voltage uses a GU10 connector (push in and twist to lock) where as yours will probably have a MR16 connector (they push straight in with two spikes).

*if* your holders have a loose lead connector in – then this could be changed for a new GU10 connector and the transformers removed, but the old connector may be part of the holder, in which case you’d need a whole new unit..

The ip65 comment from RicB is also relevant. Any device used within certain distance from a bath or shower must be rated against water ingress. (generally the second digit should be a 5 or better)

Also your lighting circuit should be RCD protected to meet regs.. If your distribution board is not new or hasn’t been upgraded then you possibly don’t have this..

I have that one.. it’s great for holes… it’s done a few 100mm cores through brick without issue.

Bit light for breaking up concrete as you’d expect, but for everything else it’s good..  you end up using it more because its light and easy.

I have the Qualcast version of the Titan and Macalister ones (from homebase).. It’s awesome. Feed in branch – nom nom nom.. sorted. Will struggle with lots of fine green stuff.. but keep throwing something bigger through to clear it and it’s great.

Mine seems to be going for £149 at the moment, but sure i didn’t pay anything like that.

The issue you may have is that you generally have to have the phone unlocked to be able to use it as a mass storage device to retrieve the data. Is the screen totally dead? or just not responding to touch?

If it’s the latter, you can plug in a USB mouse via a microusb to usb converter which will allow you to unlock and sync what you need.

If you have a valid windows 7 or 8 licence for the laptop, then i’d go with blank SSD and ram upgrade if you have less than 8gb.. Make a bootable Windows 10 USB stick (plenty of guides online) – the ISO file to make it can be freely downloaded from microsoft. Install using your windows 7 licence (hopefully it will be on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop) and it will validate fine. <edit> Seen that your sticker may have worn away – there are recovery tools available to extract it from the old install

I wouldn’t try and clone the old hard drive unless there’s something installed you really need to keep.

I did this with an older more basic laptop last month for my young son to use. The windows install part is very very simple and it picked up drivers for everything without prompting.

I have an Earthwise Solic 200 box that detects when i’m generating more power through PV than i’m using (most of the time at the moment, even with two working from home) – it offers that excess to the immersion heater so it keeps up with hot water use without using the gas boiler.

First of all, tape off the area. Do not go near it and do not let others contaminate themselves.

Next unless the paperwork you have has a lab analysis result you should get a qualified analyst to take a sample. Do not try to do this yourself as even minor disturbance with aib releases fibres way above the concentration that is safe – even with ppe. Many surveys will state that something is presumed or even strongly presumed to be asbestos. They might not have actually sampled it.

If it is asbestos then it’s a licenced removal with HSE notification job. Prob make sure you’re sitting down before you open the quote. Get a few quotes – they can vary and this isn’t always a guide to their competency.

As for your builder, the horse has bolted.. but they should possibly be looking at binning whatever they were wearing if it hasnt already been washed a few times, decontamination of their vehicle etc and speaking with their GP.

I think you know it already but aib (which generally contains brown and white asbestos) is a whole different ball game to asbestos cement. Do not assume that a disposable mask will protect you. Even a decent one that’s been face fit tested only gives you a protection factor which is easily exceeded – not complete protection.

I look after a University (in Southampton). we have lots of stainless and glass balustrade. It looks lovely but it’s very expensive when anything breaks and even internal areas needs lots of cleaning. I’m guessing in that location it may need to be toughened and laminated.

We used VR Construction for the last staircase. This was custom made welded and smoothed on site so rather pricey.

How dependant on someone pressing the button, is the functionality? Would someone knocking on the door be close enough to set off an alert? If so, I assume the “conversation” can be triggered from your phone

You can set them to chime even without a button press. They are very sensitive.. Ours detects people walking down the drive 15m away and the zones can be changed to stop false alerts. It records whenever there is movement to you can see and hear what happens at the door, even if they ignore it and knock.

Which is quite amusing when the JW’s stand looking at it suspiciously talking to each other about whether it’s a smart doorbell…

I have the pro one fitted which needs a power supply rather than battery. The video quality is very good and is fine as a door bell – however answering the call via a phone is very poor. Always seems to complain of poor network and by the time it’s connected the person’s gone anyway.

Good as a “check what happened” or “did the amazon guy leave that parcel or take it away?” type thing.

I hear the battery versions are slower as they connect to wifi when they need to rather than staying connected. I think due to the size they must have a very poor antenna is wifi strength is always complained about.. even when close to the router.

You also need to factor in a small subscription if you want to be able to record and play back video..
