Well I watched it and was pleasantly surprised. Had a very authentic comic book adaption feel to it. Really felt like it was lifted from the pages. Different and unusual story with stylised violence and action.

Glad LoveFilm accidentally sent it to me now. I also now feel compelled to take a look at 2000ad again.

I bought at the right time. In the first quarter of 2009. Properties in east mids were hitting rock bottom and we picked up a 3 bed semi for 136000. Next doors, identical but they have a garage, was bought for 189000 just 12 months previously.

It’s been up and down in value since we bought it but always above what we paid. I’m not particularly worried about making big bucks on it as it’s our home but I’d be worrying if it started to drop below our original purchase price. Currently it’s around the 160 mark.

In order to get a good or bad credit score you need to be scored on something so using credit cards and keeping them in check is a good way to boost your credit rating.

Nothing particularly dramatic, certainly not in 2 years anyway. Little bit of fluctuation with house prices dipping marginally in some areas but people are still buying, banks are still lending so fairly stable all in all I would think.

I’m in two minds whether to see Lincoln or Hitchcock on Friday. Both will be interesting to me I think. One for the Cinema, one for the LoveFilm list.

Thanks all for the info. My parents wouldn’t understand Windows in any context other than single or double glazing so I don’t think Windows 8 would be a big problem for them.

Dell seem to have some decent laptops plus good size screens (15.6″) which I think would probably be important for my folks hence I’ve now ruled out the Chromebook option. I’ve only heard good things about Dell so might go that route for them.

It’s really only a tool for them to use the internet and a means to use Messenger services to keep in touch with family and friends and as already said any laptop is going to enable that.

Windows 8 no good then? Sorry, not being a windows user I have no idea?

They’re not keen on the touch screen and prefer a physical keyboard.

I was curious about them so tried one on Thursday around cannock. Not my thing, pretty boring and I felt like an idiot. Maybe when I’m old, a middle class bore or more bearded i’ll feel more at home on one.

It’s the dullest place to live. Nothing going on there at all. Nothing to do, nothing to see. Villages separated by farmland separated by small towns separated by more farmland.

The absolute unequivocal belief, to a miserable cynical ‘glass half empty’ sort, that there is someone near perfect out there for everybody.

I’ve advertised it on the for sale forum here. Thought I’d give it a shot. I’m loathed to try eBay yet.

What are you buying from the ‘jammy sex god’ hora?

….or rollers if you don’t fancy the turbo. Rollers are a bit more entertaining I find.

Turbo trainer and road bike combo. Something for winter and summer then. Works for me.

Are you looking for the ultimate Gravity Enduro hardtail frame, or an all-day shredding machine?

I’ve absolutely no idea what this means so, as Duncan Bannatyne says, aaahm ooot.

I’ve ridden the Belter (their first frame) and though ugly the ride was a joy. A true downhill hardtail. It was heavy but bloody good fun.

Not sure about this enduro thing though.

I haven’t followed this but have been dieting. I’ve been pretty stupid really but it has worked. 11 pounds since new year and I wasn’t really overweight particularly, just wanted to trim up a bit. I’m 6’3 and was 13.3 stone. I’m now 12.6 stone.

I’ve been eating no breakfast, soup for lunch then a veg heavy evening meal and maybe a piece of fruit combined with weight lifting and cycling everyday bar Sunday. It’s been tough going and maybe not the most sensible approach.

Alien is a fantastic feminist film and a re- evaluation of feminist culture (made by a feminist). Aliens is an action flick with guns n stuff. Far inferior to the original.

QT makes films because he loves film. He loves the art of making film, he rarely sets out to make a political or social point and any reviewer who believes he does doesn’t understand QT well enough to take his films for what they are.

He’s a passionate film maker who has a desire to tell stories in the most absurdly cinematic way he possibly can. He’s had a few misses but generally I think he is a quite brilliant screen writer/director

Again, the reviewer misses the point of QT. He satirizes violence, the absurdity of the violence is meant to make you feel uncomfortable about it.

    Exactly. Summarises QT film perfectly.

Great Tarantino flick. My only criticism is that I didn’t the think the final 20 minutes was necessary. It felt like ‘super special never before seen bonus footage’. Brilliant other than that and Christoph Waltz, as always, was sublime.

If you have a video – make a film and watch it at home at your leasure

Stick on a killer soundtrack, few slo-mo’s with a build up including you travelling to the house.

When we bought our first we knocked on both neighbours properties and explained that we were considering buying and asked what the area was like. Get a few view points and an idea o what the neighbours are like?

First place we looked at the neighbour said ‘it was a great street, every one gets on well, we’ve had some fun and games with so and so getting locked out by his missus pissed up at 4 in the morning and so and so crashing his car into our porch last winter and so and so accidentally setting fire to his house with a firework, all good fun round here, it’s great’.

    We didn’t buy that one.

2 experiences with them. First was bad. Ordered a bike from them they had at a good price. All paid for, confirmation email received as expected. Heard nothing for a week. Gave them a call to ask when I could expect to receive it. Waited on the phone as I got passed from the shop floor to the warehouse back to the shop floor and finally back to the warehouse. Spoke to someone in the warehouse then checked my order and said it was due to be dispatched and would I hold for 2 minutes so he could go and double check. Waited 5 minutes at which point they hung up on me.

Re-called them, got through to shop floor explained what had happened and that I was a bit annoyed being on the phone for the best part of 20 minutes with still no information. He didn’t apologies and just said “we might be having phone line problems”. Eventually he explained that the ordered had been received (no sh!t) and it would be dispatched immediately.

Waited another 4 days, nothing. Called back again to find out what was going on when they told me they didn’t actually have the bike in stock but might be able to get one from the supplier. Again no real apology just a matter of fact explanation. I cancelled the order and asked when I would received my refund, they advised it would be done immediately and would show in my bank account within 48hrs. 1 week later after a strongly worded email to store manager I received my refund and an apology.

Vowed never to use them again but ordered some very cheap inner tubes from them a couple of weeks ago. They arrived in 3 days which is basically what I expect and would have liked when I ordered a 2.5k bike from them.

All the talk about them on here has made me genuinely curious. I hear people talk about the grin factor with them. So what is the sensation with them that makes them so enjoyable to ride?

I could do with something niche.

No the water running thing is completely real. There are dozens of mini docs online about it including the guys featured in the clip.

Anyway, people are more awesome now, that video is over 2 years old.

I’m so surprised that such a large proportion of STW members have considered suicide, when everyone on here is so easy going, light hearted and laid back. Live and let live sorts.

    fervouredimage

In the last 6 or 7 years, I have known of 5 suicides of friends in my larger circle. The most recent was an ex girlfriend who committed suicide just over a year ago (this happened 2 years after we split up and was unrelated to that).
I’ve noticed a pattern among the people I have known that have killed themselves – all have tended to have underlying psychological issues (which you would expect), and all have been very heavy social media users, with less “real life” interaction that what I would deem to be the average.

The simple answer is it can be part of the problem for some. As I said I discover more and more ‘versions’ of and causes of depression every week. The fact is that anything can potentially be a cause of depression, we don’t choose our psychological make-up and sadly there is no real pattern. While it is absolutely correct that those with underlying psychological issues can suffer with depression at some point in their life it is also correct that someone who is seemingly psychologically balanced can too.

We used to believe (some still do) that depression was a symptom of something but I think it is fair to say that for the most part it is not widely believed that depression discriminates.

I started Kayaking without any lessons or training. Some may say that’s foolish but I bought a general use, stable kayak to begin with, took it to the canal, jumped in and hoped for the best. It didn’t take long to get to grips with it but I was always nervous of tipping so was very cautious.

In the end I just took a basics course which let me experience tipping over in a controlled environment. It is something that is pretty easy to pick up and do without training imo but it is wise to go and learn how to get out of difficult situations should they arise.
