To be honest I wanted to see the light jumper and whiny voiced toss pot both realise they were wrong, hug strenuously.

Not really my sort of thing but fair enough.

To be honest I wanted too see the light jumper smack the whiny voiced toss pot in the face. Both dickheads, just for different reasons.

It is incredible. A mate of mine has a machine for drying them out and makes his own raisins!

    He makes his own raisins?

I was referring to the level of boredom more than the level of fact

I have no idea how you could possibly have been bored.

So is it more chocolatey or more marmitey?

It’s just part of the culture. Much the same as the culture around mountain biking and if you’re naive enough to think that mountain biking is just riding bikes with function over form –

I don’t ride a fixie but I still enjoy the culture that goes with it. It’s fun, it’s bikes, it’s harmless. Soak it up and stop being a judgemental and miserable sod.

Well I really like the forum. I’ve only been a member for about 4 years or so but the wide range of knowledge and expertise on here is often astounding. You can nearly always find the answer to something on here, although some of the bike knowledge is a little suspect. I enjoy reading the arguments but I don’t really involve myself, I have enough arguments in the real world without needing to have them online.

Generally though it’s still a good forum, plenty of knowledge, lots of good debate with a wide variety of opinions. I personally don’t want to just read/hear from folk who have the same POV as I do.

I’ve ridden 29ers almost exclusively the last 3 years, they’re different/better in pretty much every way, I’d proffer that an incremental size inbetween would be just that, an incremental improvement on 26″.
Yep agreed. 99% people who say 29’ers are crap have either ridden a crap one, rode a good one for ten minutes or they’re just squids.

Didn’t you hear? The industry thinks 29’ers are crap as well 😉

Scotland, it’s bigger, more remote, it’s pretty much access all areas. the people are friendlier & the girls prettier. That’s why I’m moving there

This. I enjoy the trails in Wales but all the trails in the world could not keep me there for longer than a few days, it is a truly bleak place. Scotland takes my breath away whenever I go riding there.

Vile loathsome films made by a vile loathsome man. Michael bay is a director who said that the way he approaches film making is to ensure the film “f**** the lense”. He’s an idiot of the highest order who thankfully only makes films for idiots.

Bit more complicated with me, I have people that’d miss me, so I’d need them to die first. After that, yes, I’d press that button without hesitation.

Life isn’t a game that all of us want to participate in.

This, very much so. Certainly during my mid 20’s the only thing that stopped me was the thought that my close family (parents and wife) would be utterly destroyed by it and I’d be dooming them to a painful life. I’m glad that I didn’t for the most part but I still have my dark days whereby if I had an off button, at my lowest ebb, I would press it.

For me it’s pretty simple; my bikes with their 26″ wheels have been great and I’ve loved them since I owned them ( a good few years). Since the dawn of 29″ and 650b my 26″ bikes are still great and I still love them. I’m happy with that so I’m just going to continue riding my great bikes that I love and watch the industry scrabble around in a panic trying to develop more ways to convince us all that ‘whatever inch’ wheels are the future.

You are, of course, going to have races on them before handing them over, aren’t you?

No, you are. Really, you are.

Already done that. Surprisingly nippy little things, particularly going down hill.

My Friday descent was fine. Weather was poor, visibility was poor, wind was up at the summit but still had a problem free run down rangers. We got to the summit for 8.30am and started down at 9.30. The bags are in the way obviously but they aren’t going to suddenly creep up on you and you’ll just have to make alternative cheeky lines.

The ascent was the most difficult with the wind and rain really trying to push us backwards but it was worth the effort. Met no walkers at all coming down either. Have fun.

    I couldn’t possibly comment….. Yes. 😉

I will add that it was certainly on the light end of the scale relatively speaking and the front and rear brakes were an unbelievable mismatch. The back being seemingly set-up to just scrub speed even with near enough full pull on the lever whereas the front was akin to having a wall suddenly appear in front of you. Stopped you dead with a feather light touch. Scary more than useful I thought.

It’s a good element of the sport but like BMX racing it has become so much about the gate that it’s often over before the first jump is hit and then it’s just a case of waiting for a mistake. I love the concept of 4X and I love the event on Saturday Night at Fort William WC weekend but getting the gate means getting the win more often than not.

I don’t know how you resolve that issue but it’s a shame that the fast, furious, all out combat nature of 4X seems to have been defeated. As someone has already said, very clever track designs with multiple line choices might be a part solution?

No doubt I will get the calls of envy and bitterness but I personally don’t like the new wave of big beefy 4X4’s but it’s just because I find them obscene in the same way I find giant supermarkets obscene. It’s not a logical argument I’m sure but when I see a behemoth of a 4X4 lodged into a parking space I cringe. I’m afraid I can’t help but sneer at the owners. I think they must be lacking something in their life.

I was attempting to make a point (had do so in a slightly sarcastic way due to bumping into the infamous GW last week :D) – the point being that on here anyones right to ride whatever bike the like is defended to the hilt (6″ travel for tow paths) but why do some posters come over like Daily Mail journalists and embellish posts/stories with irrelevant info.

I think you should sell your 4X4. It seems to make you quite sensitive and prone to anxiety. Owning a 4X4 by all accounts is more of a problem to the owner than anyone else.

Edit: Bloody hell, I type, some pish when pished. Bit of an oxymoron really.

Knew I should have copied and pasted it so you could have had a re-read of it in the morning. But I think you got away with it, just don’t mention poor people who earn a lot less than you…. Most people apparently.

The hatred of 4×4 drivers in this mad world. We are all tarred with the same brush, and yet, some of us also ride MTB like the rest of you.

Does being a 4X4 driver make you irritable and defensive?

Junkyard, You seem to have a lot of experience in these issues.

What exactly are your transport legislation / experience in these matters?

What does it matter? His posts in this thread are based on obvious common sense and a basic understanding of the application of law In relation to a moving vehicle striking a stationary object.

A nice bike is nice to ride no matter how shit you are. If you have the money to chuck at a high end mountain bike then go for it. Whether you an give the athertons a run for their money is irrelevant. It’s nobody else’s business what you spend your money on or how well you can use the things you spend it on. If it gives you enjoyment who am I to tell you otherwise.

You’re doing a lot of second guessing by the sound of it. I think a slightly more calm, considered approach is needed. If you do only have a year then that’s plenty of time to figure things out.

But I do think a conversation with your boss is on the cards and a stress on how life changing his decisions could be for you and others. It sounds like you have an informal sort of relationship with your boss?

There is such a thing as “media training” that one could go on to help come across better – given the professional athlete status and the sponsorship / earnings potential involved I don’t buy the whole “you do better” or “he’s a DH racer” – it’s part of his job to deal with the media well or find someone who can on his behalf and not make him look a dull as ditch-water on a video.

But he does deal well with the media. What makes you think he doesn’t? He does as much media stuff as he can. He puts in the time with film makers to make their edits. He happily does interviews, he’s honest in them. I’m sure he’s sorry that he doesn’t have a naturally fizzing personality that lights up a room when the camera’s on him but he certainly has a professional and helpful approach to the mountain bike press.

I’ve never really thought about it. I think like most people you just do things as they come along, make decisions, make choices, have a go at things, fail at things, succeed at things, find things you’re good at/not so good at.

I suppose looking back there are a few things I’m glad I did, things I worked hard for – putting in respectable lap times and finishing positions at Hawkstone Park (holy grail) at the Redbull Pro Nationals in 2010 -2012. Getting a couple of DH podiums in seniors at FOD and Llangollen. Getting the opportunity to work with a few magazines as a writer (more luck and being brazen enough to actually approach the editors than anything else) but I can’t really think of much I am actually proud of.

You know people who are GOOD at something don’t tend to be naturally good infront of a camera.

Where as people who are good in front of the camera aren’t good at anything… well part from all those people who are good at stuff and are good in front of the camera and those that are good in front of the camera who are good at stuff I suppose.

I was lucky enough to spend 3 weeks with the specialized team last July (media related thing) and out of everyone out of the entire crew Sam was by far the most down to earth and the most laid back. He has a surprisingly dry sense of humour any certainly made me laugh on a few XC rides we all went on. I guess that doesn’t translate onto camera but then why would it. You either like being in front of the camera or you don’t.
