Makes me wonder about the confidence of some folks and potential risk. For all he knew I may have been a complete nutter….

But… You’re the one who got out the car.

East mids for me so absolutely bugger all worth riding from my doorstep…. I really need to move… And quickly.

Why did you stop and get out of the car? Surely better and more satisfying to allow him to have his childish tantrum in his car without getting any response from you?

I think we paid about 100 quid to get a tow bar fitted to our car. Was a few years ago mind. It’s just the ease of both fitting the rack to the car and then mounting the bikes to the rack,

Drop the rack on the tow ball. Tighten bolt, job done. Drop bike into tyre gutters, tighten down straps and away you go. No fear of rack working loose, no fear of bike working loose and no fear of car getting dinged or scratched by bikes/rack.

We use a Thule tow bar mounted 3 bike carrier. It was worth the cost of getting a tow bar fitted.

Anybody catch Monsters when it was on Film4 recently?
Excellent low budget Brit produced sci-fi.
    Highly recommended.

Yeah, I saw it when it came out. Excellent film made on a minuscule budget with impressive special effects produced using little more than a couple of Apple Macs in the directors bedroom.

I don’t dislike the Star Wars franchise but I don’t view them as anything other than children’s films, which is exactly what they are. So I’m not overly critical of them in any sense.

Interesting though – I don’t think I’d get on with anyone who didn’t like The Godfather, for example.
Or Bladerunner. Or The Big Lebowski. Or Raiders etc……

Yes, which was a concern of mine when I was trying to force myself to enjoy Blade Runner. I consider myself a film lover and as such have a group of friends who are film nerds and love nothing more than to discuss the nuances and mise en scene of a film. It took a long time for me to pluck up the courage to admit my dislike of blade runner. It didn’t go down well even though I attempted to make a decent argument for my disdain for it.

I agree with you on Alien though. It’s not possible to dislike or at the very least not appreciate the brilliance of it surely?

You really need to decide how you feel about it first. Ask around.

Blade runner has never done much for me. Im a big Sci Fi fan, adore Ridley Scott’s earlier films and directorial style but as hard as I try, I just can’t get excited or enthralled with Blade Runner or it’s noir stylings. Find it really dull.

Back in 2006 I had a nasty spill motocross racing. I got up and stumbled to the side of the track and felt a warm patch on the inside of my race jeans. First aiders rushed over and discovered a 7″ tear on my inner thigh. Lots of blood, tissue and muscle on display made me almost faint. When one of the first aiders then pointed out that I had missed my femoral artery by about 2cm I did faint.

Later discovered that the foot peg of my bike had caused the tear. I wish I hadn’t watched that video now.

No matter how you look at it, it’s a bargain. And if your someone who just wants a dabble in DH on a DH bike then you can’t go wrong.

I wear one for whitewater always but can’t say it ever crossed my mind to put one on for canals. But I do use a very stable (slow) kayak for local canal paddling. Not sure if I’m being fool harder not wearing a helmet?

Brilliant Tomd. Looks absolutely fantastic. You did exactly what I had in mind. Maybe camping is the way to go. Flights are dirt cheap via easyjet too. How much did they charge you for the bikes?

Cheers guys. It’s actually the remoteness that appeals to my wife the most I think. Hence I thought that taking the bikes and just riding the ‘wilderness’ would be a good way to experience it, although I approach this with zero experience of Iceland so I could be completely off.

In terms of the expense of the place, what is it that tends to be most obviously expensive over there? Accommodation? Trips and excursions? Food and drink?

Great. Cheers. I was actually thinking of going for a few nights, taking the bikes and just riding as much of the place as possible (wife is a keen biker) and experiencing the country that way, plus I was hoping it would be a cheaper means to enjoying what’s on offer.

I really want to be very fit again. I’ve never been particularly unfit but between the ages of 20 and 26 I was supremely fit and full of motivation as a result. I’m 31 now and I can’t remember what it was like to be full of energy and motivated to take part in things – climbing, competitive cycling and running etc.

So I just want to be as fit and full of ‘bounce’ as I was back then. It will have a big impact on my life and my nearest and dearest too.

Do much much less procrastinating. If I could do that then all the things I keep wanting to do would be done.

I’m not back at work for another week, there’s no way I could have held out for that long and colleagues would have moaned at me for off loading all my unwanted unhealthy crap on them.

    Chuck ’em in the bin.

1 huge box of chocs and 2 x half tins of biscuits have gone that way here. At least 3,000 calories i wont have to worry about burning off.

Yep, we did the same. Tin of roses, 2 tins of shortbread biscuits, box of maltesers, large block of dairy milk and a tin of honey roasted peanuts – all in the bin. But gratefully received none the less.

It’s possible I’ll do some fell running but it will only be a handful of times a year (if I’m lucky!). Are the fell raisers more fell running orientated than the speedcross?

Got my last present this morning and for me and mine it was our best….

And if I could show you the scan, that said my mum’s chemo is working, I would.

Great news. My mum had her first chemo the week before Christmas so likewise we are hoping for similarly good news in the near future. All the best to your mum for 2014!!!

The only thing I think I was ever really good at was motocross. I started at 4 and by the time I was 10 I was winning British schoolboy championships and competing in European championships, but my mum and dad didn’t ever see it as being anything other than weekend fun so never pushed me. I guess back then it was hard to see how you could make a living out of it. As a result it slowly fizzled out and I’m basically just a good expert amateur rider. I’ve always believed that if I had really pursued it I could have been a British championship contender. Too late to ever find out now sadly.

So far, given I’ve only had it for a month, I’ve only ridden it on road to get to local woodland for 3-4 miles, so have just been riding everything with the stock tyres. I’ve been surprised at just how well it does ride on road actually. I’d say it’s certainly heavier then I’d expected but I personally find that perfectly fine for off road. It makes me feel a little more stable and confident when conditions are tricky.

When I stick some slicks on it I’ll let you know how it goes.

Well, I recently took the plunge and bought a Planet X CX bike. I love it and although I unquestionably am still enjoying the novelty of a new bike I honestly can’t see myself riding much else locally. My mountain bikes will certainly get used a lot lot less other than for big ‘adventure’ rides in Wales, Scotland etc.

    Wish I’d got one sooner.

Shadow of a doubt is one of my faves. It’s one of his earlier Hollywood films but really good. Beautiful cinematography.

My year hasn’t been a great one either – made redundant, lost my grandad to cancer, mum diagnosed with breast cancer.

But, we’re all trying to keep our heads up and working on the principle that it will pass and things will get better. You’ve got to take the rough with the smooth.

also a new term is “freelancer” not self employed in some circumstances

Is that just terminology or does it actually have some bearing on things, from a HMRC point of view?

I did something similar this year. A guy who runs his own business who employ a friend of mine asked me whether I’d be willing to help him out (kind offer as he knew I’d been made redundant). He told me it would be 3-4 months work but he wouldn’t really be looking to employ me or even offer a zero hours contract. It put me in a tricky situation as I definitely didn’t want to turn down the work but was concerned that technically speaking I wouldn’t be self employed. But I decided that given the option registering as self employed was the only way to go. Very straight forward. Did it all online, pay my NI via DD and am all set up to do my tax returns online.

I’ve managed to get another one or two bits of work from others to show I’ve had other clients. I’m hoping that, if it comes to it, that will be enough to prove my self employed status as being correct.

I’ve mentioned it before on here but my wife is autistic. Although it creates its challenges for her and me it hasn’t had an overtly negative impact on her life. She understands herself better than anyone else ever could so she knows how to deal with it and has learnt to start looking at things from other peoples perspectives (something she was previously completely incapable of doing) which has been a major breakthrough in terms of work and family relationships. Being frank, although I didn’t have any idea she was autistic when I met her 10 years ago, it was her challenging and interesting personality and her viewpoint of the world that completely hooked me in.

It has been posted before but there are some cracking cafe racer pics on here

Great site. After gawping at those images I feel even more inspired to start a build. I think I’m going to opt for a cb350. You can pick up a rusty old example for not too much.

Anyone like the flat tracker style?

Yeah, that’s something else I’ve considered. Brendan Fairclough had one built I think. I’m sure there’s a video on pinkbike of him riding it somewhere. Was a lovely looking machine.

Some great examples. Initially I was very much in favour of a British based build but actually looking at some Japanese machines that have been ‘cafe’d’ I think it has some potential. That cb550 looks great, maybe something along those lines. My wife also wants one so was thinking a cb200 cafe conversion would be a good option. Not powerful machines obviously but very light and definitely lend themselves to the cafe racer look.
