A phrase I use all the time, which winds me up but i cant stop is:
    ‘I was thinking to myself’
Until I become adept at telepathy, its highly unlikely I’ll be thinking to anyone else!

Not a phrase, but the word ‘colourway’ to describe a paint job. HATE HATE HATE.

Speed means nothing unless you include distance and all stops.

The real question is how far can you treadle in a day IMO.

A day being any time under 24 hours or being knackered whichever comes first. called by the wife and asked why you haven’t put up the shelves, sorted the rubbish and why there are empty biscuit packets in the cupboard

    FIFY

Riding my mtb on road (commuting so not really hammering it) I get an average speed according to strava of 20-30kmh for a 20 minute commute. There is one real hill on my commute down on the way in, up on the way home, so a lot of the variability comes from if there is traffic queuing down the hill on my way in. Anything over 25kmh I think is reasonable.

Off-road there are so many variables I end up feeling like my speed varies wildly but it ends up in quite a small range of between 15-20kmh over an entire ride. Weirdly this doesnt vary if i am riding for 1hr or 3. I am happy with anything over 17kmh for hilly stuff.

Stop thinking, start buying! I’m bored of being the only Pig with a cross/gravel bike. (Although I think there may be a couple of others starting to take an interest.) You can certainly take my CAADX for a spin, but I think the 54cm might be a little too big?

Haha – cheers Jon. I’d been half planning on popping out to U.C today after work and biting the bullet but they are closed!

Nice one, I’m the same, want to buy from a localish shop (esp as have never ridden a drop bar so want to test for size etc). For mainly commuter use, with a bit of random riding (fitnesss riding on road when its been peeing down and i dont have time to clean the mtb of 25kg of mud!) and trying a couple of ‘cross races. Am weighing up the genesis or the cheapest ridley cx bike. Sounds like the gnesis will probably do what I am after fine and is a bit cheaper. Now that I’m pretty much 100% on getting one or the other I’ll head off for test ride at some point after work in the next week or so.

that was nuts, was watching the live stream on the net and just thought f@@@rk!! Feel sorry for Fanning, clearly in shock with cameras thrust in his face. The WorldSurfLeague exectuives must have been creaming themselves with joy at the publicity / web analytics boost – i read somewhere that the clip on their website was watched around 3million times since it happened yesterday- then next highest was 60k

Biking is way more dangerous than surfing though!

My Genesis CDA. Relatively cheap and great fun.

Care to elaborate? I am toying with buying one of these

There are loads of wild horses where I ride and they don’t give two hoots when you go past, still call out. Know a couple of people (horsey types) who have had their ribs broken by a horse kick and I don’t fancy that!

Only the to55ers who cut corners.

I think you are confusing the use of strava with the personality trait of being an @r$€h0l€

I always wonder why people who profess to not caring how fast they are going aren’t riding nice rigid bikes with bar ends, panniers etc, because that is the ideal sight seeing bike :?. Unsurprisingly many seem to mostly be riding top of the range excessively long travelled fs trail bikes

Based on my knowledge of day boats, you’ll need a crate of ale, a dictionary of new swear words, some industrial strength grumble and at least 200 cigarettes. Oh and some fishing gear.

Haha beat me to it. Though by me if you want to fit in substitute ale for Carling

I made up some small laminated cards and have one in every bag, road and MTB , with all my details on it and the wifes etc.

this is a good idea actually. I will do the same.

if you look at the strava global heatmap you’d say 90% in the UK, 1% everywhere else!

I’d expect the proportion of people using Strava in a race would be much higher than normal

not sure, you get timing anyway, and its extra weight and faff.
I use it in races, but I think its less than half who do (based on flybys etc).

The thing I always wonder about is, round trail centres especially, how many people are going full blat. I find I am sometimes about the same time as ‘names’ who i know are way faster than me, but for all i know they could have just been crusing along on a social ride

About 10-15 mins if I drive, sub twenty if I cycle the quick route along the road, around an hour if I cycle off-road and get distracted :-) same on the way home.

Will soon be changing to longer though

If you do use strava you can make your own routes on a computer and it looks like from the latest update, have them displayed on your phone as you ride round

Kelly Slater (worlds most sucessful pro surfer) has started a clothing brand called outer known. It looks like m&s but it is £350 for a jumper – because it’s ethical and Eco don’t you know. Although how a bloke who flies round the world on a weekly basis can care about Eco is beyond me!

Currently have a Whyte 901, in an ideal world my next mtb would be to switch frame and forks for an xc race hardtail. If I was rich it would be a pivot les 27.5 with marzocchi lcr carbon forks.

My next bike will actually be a cyclocross bike for commuting and the odd race. Either something second hand or just maybe a low end Ridley

How is it wrong to call yourself emotionally retarded? You might well be deficient in the emotion department and they would have no idea. I would have a go at whoever got at you for being so insensitive as to assume you had sufficient control on your empathy to realise what you’d said might be upsetting.

You can ride all te trails in afan in a day and a half or so, so i’d be tempted to do Afan Monday and Thurs and natural on weds. COuld ride penhydd and the wall on monday am. head up to do whites level in the arvo. Ride blade thurs am and then go and mess around in the skills park in the arvo (Blade is a work out so good to have a chill in the arvo before bpw.

Natural stuff loads of options. depends how far you want to drive.

Go and see a physio. I had a mild groin strain, rested it, pain didn’t stop. Turned out my hip had stiffened up while healing, onesession of manipulation with the physio and I was fixed.

plus 3 on the hoover actually. Pretty sure the advice is hoovering with a non-asbestos-certified hoover is the worst thing you can do.

Is it not a bit late to be asking such questions?

Do you mean asbestos cement sheet or some other kind of sheet – if you mean cement I’d have thought you’d be fine. not that i have any real knowledge, just that I’ve been told the stuff in cement is super tightly bonded to the cmemnt

It’s just fashion. same way that girls go and buy the same dress that kate middleton is seen wearing or blokes have started wearing jeans so tight they probably were designed for girls just because… [actually i have no f-ing idea why – i mean seriously, self castration by denim is seen as a good thing?]

yep I am with you, utter rubbish. I had one last a month earlier this year. It’s mind-blowing that they can get away with such rubbish. If other parts of the drivetrain was so bad noone would bother using them.

Cheers, that is a massive amount! never realised it was so much. Means its actually relevant even in pretty amateur xc races. [off to re-think race tactics..]

When we had someone lay ours for us over concrete floor tey put a thin foam underlay down and just (I think) glued the planks together (they had jointed sides)

how fast do you need to be going to get the drafting effect? You notice it with elite level xc racers too taking turns.

Data is quickly becoming the most important commodity in the world. Of course Sky would get their lawyers to look into it. As mikewsmith says, you could use it to establish and exploit their weaknesses, if you have enough of it you could infer their training patterns.
