I think people are referring to the NHS England booking system. I’m in Scotland (Highlands). The system he is that vaccinations are given by the local GP Practice. They contract their patients in order, as they are allocated supplies. They are vaccinating some over 50’s today, but do not have doses for all. As I’m 52, going on 53, they must be well short of having enough doses for the over 50’s. I’m sure I’m far from alone.

So is Boris mis-informed, lying, or confused about the difference between England and the UK?

According to Boris Johnson, all over 50’s in the UK have now been offered a vaccine. Not in my experience they haven’t!

That’s the full 90 days complete. I’m thinking that I may carry on until I get a Covid jab, hopefully in the next couple of weeks or so.

Did the Beinn Damph circuit yesterday No loose dogs at the fish farm, although there were people there, so all looks OK.

Address you using the original handlebars? I have a Fortitude Race, and upgraded to 720mm wide Easton EA70’s (cos they were a bargain price, upgradeitus). I’ve been quite suprised by the increase in comfort – they are far more complacent than the originals.

EE in the Highlands – they are providing the new network for emergency services, so are adding coverage to remote spots. The have a transmitter at the end of the road in Glen Feshie.

Hmmm. I live close enough to go there as a local ride. Better make sure that I don’t go alone!

@Spin – plenty of snow on An Teallach still (waves from the other side of the hill). Although it’s been really tempting, we haven’t done any winter routes this year – doesn’t feel right to have to much gnar. Re posting pictures on Facebook – I was initially nervous zit doing so, but most of my social circle (spread throughout the UK) seem to appreciate them, as they get to keep some form of connection with the hills the love.

I’ve had a Fairlight Strael for nearly 3 years now. It’s done everything I’ve asked of it – including a 2,100 mile 3 week trip across Europe, Scottish winters, and some frankly absurd loaded riding on Norwegian singletrack. The wise range of frame sizes enabled me to get a near custom fit. Can’t recommend the Strael highly enough!

Well said I was trying too hard to be polite!

If anyone wants to do something to help the injured MRT member, follow this link https://www.mountainrescue.org.uk/support-us/

There are some pretty ill-informed comments appearing on here. No-one with any real knowledge of the incident is condemning the original casualty for making a 999 call – and none should there be. There is absolutely no suggestion that the injured MRT member was in any way lacking in skills or experience – and nor should there be.

It’s far too easy to jump to conclusions about people who have to be rescued. I was involved in Mountain Rescue for around 10 years in Cumbria (including 7 years in Patterdale MRT). I find it difficult to recollect more than a handle of incidents where I couldn’t understand the chain of events leading to a call out, and conclude that the casualty/ies were being idiots.
So, unless people REALLY know the full story, don’t be sick to pass judgement. I also feel quite strongly, that it is not the pace of MRT’S to pinking pass judgement. The last thing we need is people in trouble in the hills to be reluctant to call for help because if a dear of the public reaction.

I got fed up with the faff involved in packing an Alpkit Koala, and persuading it to stay stable. Replaced it with a Restrap holster setup, which has worked really well. As a bonus, the system can be expanded by stuffing items between the holster and dry bag. I do also have an Alpkit Big Papa, which works much better than the Koala – but is quite large.

Worked my way round them during the winter of 1991-92 as a way of making myself explore parts of the Lakes I wouldn’t otherwise visit. Resulted in some great days out, and some spectacular epics. There were some unexpected gems, and some insignificant lumps. I quite like Hartsop above Howe though!

I enjoyed it, probably in part as 2020 was the first year since 1986 that I didn’t visit the summit. Lots of good memories, and a few not so good.

Got a Hope V twin on a tandem, with E4 calipers. Cable / hose installation was a fiddle to get right, but functions really well..

Had a similar issue with a SON dynamo hub on our tandem. The large flanges on the hub changed the spoke angle just enough to catch the caliper, which didn’t happen with the Pro2 hub on the usual front wheel. Spacing the rotor out solved the problem.

Lovely. Been riding a Secan since February, with no regrets. Regularly switch between 700c wheels with 40mm Gravel Kings and 650b with 2.2 8nch Maxxis Ikons. The former are good all-rounder on anything but mud, the latter are able to cope with terrain that really shouldn’t be sensible on a gravel bike.

You’re going to enjoy riding this, and I’m jealous of the colour.

FWIW I have today become a member of the Labour Party, a party that should be my natural political home. A party that I have not voted for since the Iraq war. I hoped that a generational change after that debacle would give me the confidence to vote for them again. Instead there was (as it came across to me) leadership by a group so convinced of the correctness of their own ideology that they could not engage with another who held even slightly differing views. Today I have some confidence that the Labour Party is rebuilding into something decent and electable.

I get a dining feeling when I see that something I have ordered is being sent bus Hermes. Beurig shows up on the tracking, goes into a black hole for anything up to 10 days before magically re-appearing usually as out for delivery, but sometimes returned to sender for miscellaneous spurious reasons.

I live and work on the NC500 route (west coast, Laide area). The reports you have read are sadly correct at the moment. Not many campsites open, even fewer public toilets. If you step off the tarmac, be very careful where you put your feet.

Would really like a nice 853 Sherpa at some point. TBH, I just wish that the keyboard warriors could just stop and think for a minute before lashing out in a public way. A quick query direct to Stsnton may have been met with “Oops, sorry, subdue needs updating. We’ll get on to it!”.

Chill out Dan, it’s only a few people being a bit silly.

I use 35mm SKA chromoplastics on my Fairlight Strael. Tyres are 28mm Contintental Grand Prix GT, which measure up at 30mm on 20mm rims. Clearance is fine. I think the frame and forks make a difference.

I’m a postie….. There is a new procedure for delivering items requiring a signature. Basically, we place item on doorstep, knock on door, retire to a safe distance. We witness customer taking item into their premises, enter their name into our handheld device, and depart. No signature required.

I do understand that some customers do not currently want post through their letter box. If this us the case, a secure postbox is a suitable alternative.

Think about making it quick and easy for your postie to deliver. Volume is up about 50% in my area. We will no doubt be short staffed at times. Personally, I also think that it’s really important that we have time to keep an eye on some of our vulnerable customers. For some of my customers, a chat with me (from a safe distance) is the only regular human contact that they have.

To add to the list of MRT members injured whilst involved in rescues – 2003 a member of Kendal MRT has just been winched to a craggy location on the Langdale Pikes when the aircraft rotors struck the crag. As the aircraft pulled away to make an emergency landing in the valley, the team member was knocked over by the winch wire. He fell, and suffered significant injuries.

I did ten years as an MRT member, mostly in a busy team, and four years as a Search Dog Handler. I am struggling to think of more than a handful of incidents where, when you consider the casualties starting point in terms of knowledge and experience, I could honestly think of them as idiots. We all make mistakes in the hills, especially when starting out. Mostly we get away with it, and learn. If you are unlucky, you do not get away with it. In my book, you are only an idiot if you do not learn from your mistakes.

WRT charging for rescue – this really is Daily Mail logic. Most rescues are low down, think “going for a stroll in the countryside” territory. Should we expect everyone who leaves the roadside to be insured? When an incident occurs higher up, do we want casualties to delay calling for help because of the potential bill? The first time (and the would be a first time) someone died as a result of calling for help, the would, quite rightly, be an outcry.

It was TV gold just for seeing Nicholas Crane take on the Black Sail Pass with rod brakes

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0078y2t

That’s a blast from the past, filmed in 2004! I was cast in the role of “Mountain Safety Expert” in that programme. I was supposed to give Nick Crane a hard time for being ill equipped. Nick helpfully removed his head torch from his bag so that I had something to pull him up on.

Fairlight Secan doesn’t have to be particularly burly. Pretty light for a steel frame – build it the easy you want.

Somedays I wearer the clothing which I got as payment after I modelled for an outdoor clothing brand photoshoot 15 years ago. Does that count?
