Not everything, no. But this one, yes. Do you still worry if you haven’t got the proper cool trainers?

    Nope.

    No, it’s not.

Yeah, but it demonstrably is. Riding that high horse for that long must be making you sore.

    I find this odd. Well – I didn’t when I was 8 years old..

Do you? Do you find it odd?
Do you find it odd that people continue to enjoy things they enjoyed when they were younger? Do you?
Like riding bikes? Like eating chips? Like going on rides at amusment parks?

I think you mean, you don’t like it so no-one else should. Is that correct?

    Dead Kennedy’s Plastic Surgery Disasters

Recently listened to this on new sound system. Wonderful hair standing on end trip back in time.

    Why is this enjoyable?

Some people enjoy it. They have imaginative brains and enjoy the game. Whether the game is real or in their head is irrelevant.

Why do you enjoy pootling everywhere? Only you know.

The anticipation of the regular Friday farmyard in a bun at my work.
The food is great but the anticipation is better.

And being able to leave most people in a cloud of dust on demand… er, well, mostly smoke actually… is a nice option.
    There it is again.. fascinating..

Whilst I take your point, it’s undeniable that when we’re in our cars, at times there’s a sense that we’re children again and playing at racing.
I’m not condoning making the roads into a child’s racetrack, but obviously it’s part of our psyche.

All I said was that that the anti clarkson crowd don’t like the suggestion that his top gear persona is in any way a “Character” that he plays

The point is, whether it’s a “character” or not, casual racism, misogyny, etc., etc. are wrong. That should be an accepted fact.
It’s the casual nature that keeps the closet racists happy – the constant subtle and not so subtle digs sustains that kind of backwards thinking.

I read one of his early books that was left at work years back on nightshift. Unless he was “in character” for the whole book, the bloke’s a reactionary knob.

At the risk of repeating the bleeding obvious from the haterz camp:

I hope they sack the bigoted, racist old man.
He’s guilty, like Farage, of making soft racism and bigotry seem ok.
He appeals to scared little englanders because they like to hide their bigotry by revelling in being “politically incorrect”.

Top Gear rarely made personal attacks like that. But you know, it’s fine, but you don’t like him. So carry on.

Hey, I said it was a joke. Don’t get offended.

    If not, don’t.

Reducing calorie intake to 1200 Mon to Thurs and eating normally Fri to Sun works for me.
I’m realistic in my goals. I want to lose approx 6-8 kg for summer and am completely happy that I will start to put it back on for autumn and winter.

I did this last year and it was easily manageable as I wasn’t kidding myself I’d be “dieting” forever.

Although, as above, I know it isn’t as simple or easy for everyone.

The big question: will our robot overlords merge in turn or form a long queue?

I fully agree but in the meantime? Personally, I’ll go with the flow rather than risk getting to the front of the right hand lane and see nothing but set jaws and angry faces, with no beggar letting me merge.

    This.

If I was the crusading type, I’d do it every time to try to force a change in thinking.
Unfortunately, sometimes I just want an easy life and decide to cowtail to the majority.

    To quote again from HC:

“You should follow the signs and road markings and get into the lane as directed. In congested road conditions do not change lanes unnecessarily. Merging in turn is recommended but only if safe and appropriate when vehicles are travelling at a very low speed, e.g. when approaching road works or a road traffic incident. It is not recommended at high speed.”

I don’t see any ambiguity in the recommendation.
It isn’t a rule to be followed just a recommendation.

If people follow that recommendation why is that a problem?

Although I know merging in turn is correct, in reality I sometimes choose not to do it to avoid the aggro.
It all depends on my mood.

Shame to have to join the other idiots but sometimes it’s easier for a stress free journey.

I did read that. What happens if the queued lane is stationary though?
Do you stop and merge early? Surely not.

Assume correctly by the sound of that

I’ve said it before on other similar threads, I wish I had a light up sign that read “I’m not pushing in, I’m merging in turn. Please don’t take it personally”

Excuse my ignorance but If the fuel is cut off when going downhill in 5th (with foot off gas) how does the engine keep firing?
Doesn’t there need to be some fuel to keep the pistons going?

    How is this:

Agnosticism, as has been pointed out several times, is a position on the possibility of knowing if a god or gods exist, not half way between belief and non-belief

    Any different to this:

If some compelling evidence comes along to convince me otherwise then I’ll change my mind and I will no longer be an atheist. That doesn’t make me an agnostic, it makes me someone who is prepared to change their mind in the face of new evidence.

So if evidence comes along that shows a god(s) exists you’ll change your mind. How is that not allowing the possibilty of god(s) existing?

Other than a badge to wear, I’m not sure why anyone would logically be either a theist or atheist.

    FeeFoo
    Free Member

And the thing all the theists always seem to overlook is, this is not a static belief. Atheism doesn’t imply a closed mind, it’s a current standpoint based on available information, and is open to change as new information and evidence comes to light. This is how science works, kids!

Nope. As you stated earlier, atheism is the rejection in the belief of god(s). Not “rejection in the belief of god(s) until proof comes along from science or something”
What you have there is agnosticism.

No shame in that. No need for absolutes.

Ah, money. Must remember that making money glosses over/forgives the all the other sins.
Indeed. Racism, Xenophobia, Homophobia and Sexism are all fine as long as the numbers stack up. It’s almost like money is the be-all and end-all. Who knew?

    This.

Loving the usual “it makes lots of money for the BBC/us so there!” argument.

    FeeFoo

    Racism, xenophbia, etc., etc.

Does TG need these in order to entertain those that enjoy it?
Does laddish humour have to involve the above?

I don’t think it does. If it was just three blokes dicking about in cars, scripted or otherwise then it’d be fine.

Watching the “slope” clip again (on Charlie Brooker’s Wipe) it was an obvious racist comment.
They had the chance to remove it but obviously thought it was funny.
Remove the clip and what had the programme lost?

If the BBC feel the need to bring in viewing figures with these sort of acts then it’s a sad state of affairs.

    FeeFoo
    Free Member

Both the slope and Mexican things were completely unnacceptable.

The Mexican comments only seemed “okay” as there are very few Mexicans living in this country/Europe.
You just need to replace Mexican with Indian, Pakistani, Chinese, etc., etc., to see why it’s wrong.

It’s offensive. That doesn’t mean anyone was swooning with shock as the apologists like to argue, just that it’s a nasty, hateful thing to say.

When I posted my earlier comment, it was at the point they were driving around a muddy field. In Chile. 5 minutes of watching a barrel being scraped. A barrel that has been scraped so hard, it is really just a few bendy bits of wood – which they use to fashion a bridge!!! Oh, such japery.

What will be quite entertaining is the episode when Clarkson trips over, cracks open, and foie gras leaks out.

Oi, this is pantomime! That’s much too literary! :D
