Yep it remembers the date and time for the day you set it. Then low and behold it’s the 01/01/2008 again. Groundhog day!

I commute all year round, but have to admit last winter, although the gritters were going round main roads, they were ploughing everything into the edge of the road where you would normally cycle. I didnt fancy taking on the traffic in already less than grippy conditions – made do with a reasonable walk to the Metro an dthen a reasonable walk to work, rather than get the bus – bit more exercise for me as I wasn’t on the bike.

As the others have said though mudguards and decent gloves are vital IMHO.

Is it the other drivers insurer who is providing the hire car and settling for the written off car?

If it is then a 3rd party liability claim, which you can pursue yourself, or, if you have legal cover on your/your wife’s car insurance – they can do this for you – the purpose of such cover is to provide you with the ability to claim ‘out of pocket’ expenses caused by the 3rd party.

You may find you have this cover on your home insurance too. It’s worth checking your policies.

This is only helpful if it is the other driver’s insurer who is settling with you, as if it is your own insurer the legal cover does not apply – primarily as they will only pursue damages/expenses if they are certain they will succeed.

On another note, does it take so long to upload even one 5 minute file onto YouTube because of my pathetic broadband connection speed? oh how I wish for fibre optic like once before!!!

On the way home from work is fine; but on the way to work not so fine….nothing worse than having to re-attire oneself in damp clothing…..(nowhere to dry stuff at work) :-)

OK. So with me nothing is ever that easy…..haha

Movie maker seems really simple to use, but every time I try to import a file it ‘encounters a problem and needs to shutdown’.

I did try uploading one file onto my YouTube/Google account, but this was telling me that for 1 5 minute file it would take 351 minutes to complete. Given that I didn’t have the thick end of 6 hours spare I cancelled and gave up.

    Any advice please?

It’s dual insurance – all manner of issues; the DVLA have a record via your V5C of who is responsible for insuring the vehicle under the Continous Insurance Enforcement legislation; the Motor Insurers Database will flag to the 2nd insurer – at some point – that the vehicle is already insured (by driver A) – potentially leading insurer B to VOID that policy – this would leave Driver B uninsured at that point, and if police involvement could lead to charging with driving uninsured – motoring conviction, points, fine and higher premiums. This would then have to be declared – the VOIDing of the policy; possible conviction etc – to all future insurers – limiting the number who would quote, and potentially increasing premium still further. Not worth it.

Tell your insurer. They paid out on a claim , whether a proportion or not, and therefore the bike is not ‘yours’. I work for an insurer and we have always told the customer to keep the recovered bike and do with as they wish – as earlier posts have said there is no value in an insurer taking back the bike they will not recover any of their costs.

Is it available with your bank account? It is often cheaper to add cover to your home insurance – as mentioned above (as this covers other items too) than it is to purchase separate mobile over.

My LBS (well it’s the nearest one to me) ‘lost’ my sons bike! Took it in, had some work done, got a cll to say it was ready. Spoke to same bloke (there is only 2 of them) when dropping bike off and when receiving call to say bike ready. Went to collect only to be told….”er, we haven’t got it….someone picked it up yesterday….”. “Intriguing” was my reply. Turned out when he looked for the 24″ wheeled silver bike, he couldn’t see it and was actually looking for a 26″ wheeled grey bike that he had given back to it’s rightful owner the previous day……not been back funnily enough!

PS. Just for balance – I’m a car driver too. In my early driving days, inexperienced, I knocked over a cyclist. Worst moment of my life. My fault, I misjudged distance and my ability to stop/manoeuvre etc. He was OK and jolly decent about it too. Helped, by his comments and attitude, form my opinion that there are as many idiot drivers as there are idiot cyclists. I didn’t drive again for a while. I will, however, never forget that moment, or just how graciuos my ‘victim’ was. God bless him.

I shall keep this ‘short’ but here is what occurred….

Riding along a ‘typical’ town street – not a major road, just a normal road with houses and the odd shop on it, with also a smattering of parked cars (2) I was riding along with no other road users on’my’ road. To my left there was an adjoining road – T junction. I was well illuminated – lights – 2 each end; hi-viz coat, hi viz-trousers, hi-viz backpack etc. As I rode across the t-junction (remember I was heading straight along the road with right of way) a van pulld out of the t-junction at some speed t-boning me into a wall on the opposite side of the road – a distance of some 20 feet or so. The van stopped; driver got out and immediatley appologised, said it was his fault, asked if I was ok, if the bike was ok, said he cycled himself etc. 5 witnesses to the incident all concerned with my welfare with comments of “how did you not see him, he’s lit up like a f****n xmas tree” etc.

Van driver then gets all aggressive. Witnesses say he smells of drink. Police called but he’s driven off. Police at scene say nothing they can do; until a witness says the van driver is drunk…then calls in the re-inforcements. As far as they were concerned I “could report it, or not, but there was nothing they could do”. I asked whether the officer had children. “What the **** has that got to do with anything” he says; but i persist and he says yes. I asked what he would do if it was his child hit. “off the record…. I’d f****n hunt him down and do him” says the copper. Nice. Eventually I go home. I have reported it. I had a reg number thanks to the witnesses. The van driver had found nearest pub it turns out; parked up and locked up van then proceeded to neck as much booze as possible. Police….. “we’re sorry sir, but there is nothing more we can do.” Gee thanks.

Most of the breakdown companies do a standalone EU cover which can be purchased for short periods e.g. 7 or 14 days. It would be worth asking your current provider how much to upgrade your own cover, but be aware if it’s though your car insurer, or not, it may be cheaper to buy an additional cover rather than upgrade.

But beware… policy wording varies form company to company and is very specific.. lots of threads on forums about ‘nightmares’ and large expense bills as cover not doing what it purports to do. E.g.
    http://www.rac.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?15574-European-Cover-Concern&p=90832#post90832

Also, just make sure you have the right cover on your car insurance too.

So it turned out to be the other way round…..Kes on Tuesday and Bikescene on Saturday! Guys at KMB were great so as I’m over the Lakes quite a lot with the family I’ll definitely be popping in there!

Must give praise where it is due – thanks for the tip esselgruntfuttock – Ian @ Bikescene was great – and unlike elsewhere really helpful, informative and actually gave a damn about it being right for you!! Was nice to a put face to the ‘screen’ name too Jim!!! Cheers again….I’m away to play on my new ‘toy’. :D

I did think about a bigger size but at that time in the shop they only had the medium in the zesty. I’m guessing that it just fely way diferent to what I ride normally – yes that doesn’t mean right but I feel more planted on my HT (18″ frame and 80mm stem. Both FS bikes left me feeling as GW suggested. I did try moving the saddle – and I must admit the stemm did seem veryshort but again I’m comparing to what i have now which is not what I tried!! thanks or the advice though and I will be trying a number of different bikes also.

I intend to! This was merely a request for any experience out there. The bike was fine in all other aspects I’m just wondering if the feeling I got was due to the stem length or not – but hey I thought thats what these forums were for????? Asking people who might know, a question they may know the answer to………guess not then eh mrmo

Thanks mboy. Yeh I wasn’t looking for which bike I should get just some general ideas on travel and how this helps/detracts from the ride. Out of interest would a stumpy HT take a 120mm fork? I’ve got 100mm at the moment and have doen since breaking the scarab it came with.

On the credit card front – you can get a Tesco Clubcard credit card and you get 15mths interest free on purchases from when you set up the card. Got mine last year, got my boy’s bike on it – just finished paying it off having paid no interest and now its cut up and cancelled!!
