Did similar from the NE (England) earlier this year. Drove down to digs on Friday, BPW Saturday, back to digs Saturday night then onto FOD Sunday morning for a couple of hours then home. Brilliant weekend.

The Panaracer shop on Amazon is selling the semi slicks in 700×43 for £30. Not massively cheap but still a good price.

@thegeneralist that’s the one. On the OS map you climb Stake Pass then turn right at Pile of Stones and follow this path to Angle Tarn. The path is a bit vague and boggy in places but still a better option than climbing Rossett Pikes and the descent from Styhead Tarn to Stockley Bridge is superb.
A shorter option for the ride is to start/finish at Grange (start by climbing the road to Watendlath) thereby cutting out the circuit of Derwent Water.
Got me thinking I must do it again soon.

Edit – explained much better by bails and yes, the Langstraff footpath is much better.

Jackie Morris is very popular in our house.

We found the pebble on the shore of Crummock Water nestled in a tree after she posted a pic of it hidden.

It’s been mentioned in previous North Lakes threads but the Bash with Langstraff/Angle Tarn/Sty Head/Seathwaite extension is one of the best days I’ve had on a bike.

Excellent photos! Bet she flies along on that.

I built this up for my daughter when she was slightly older (can’t remember her height though).

It’s now for sale (not at all stealthy I know!) but would genuinely like to see someone from here get it and make use of it as my girl has shown zero interest in cycling.
It’s a small Brand X frame and I also have the medium for sizing up.

Have been keeping an eye on the Nukeproof 2.5l waterproof jackets. They were £90 down from £150 for ages then yesterday they went to £60 so ordered. Now they are £45!, red and grey all sizes – bargain at that price.

Wide feet here too. Haven’t tried many others in their range but my old Mammut’s were like slippers.

@Jimmy thanks for that Mammut PSA. My Mercury GTX boots have just started to fall apart after 10yrs of regular use so it’s great to get them replaced.

I’ve a mate who’s relatively new to MTB, I get embarrassed at how he blasts past people without a word and quite often have to apologise as I gently meander past after

You weren’t at Hamsterley a couple of weeks back were you? Some d#@k tried to force his way past (elbows touching) on some singletrack, shortly after his two mates came by and said ‘ignore him he’s a p£#@k’.
Now obviously, a d#@k is a d#@k irrespective of the bike they ride but there does seem to be a lot of riders new to the sport who lack trail etiquette (basic manners?) and who’s only experience of MTBs are ebikes which I think amplifies this and winds people up.

I’ve had my Ripmo AF for about 6 months now and can thoroughly recommend them. It pedals really well and the DVO suspension is first rate.
I paid £2400 for mine which I thought was a bargain, £1899 is stupid cheap for a bike of that quality.

Can’t comment on Shimano but my two pairs of 45 North wave shoes are the same size as my recently purchased DHB pair.
Very good quality shoes, would snap them up at that price.

For me an ebike would take away a huge part of what I find enjoyable about riding.
So much these days is ‘assisted’- technology makes our lives easier in a huge amount of ways so I like to have something which takes a bit of effort to get the most out of it – my performance and ability (or lack of) on a bike is all down to me and nothing else.
At 52 I’m probably riding better than I ever have and don’t (yet) feel the need for an ebike.
This is of course only my version of how to enjoy yourself on a bike, as long as whatever you do works for you then all is good.

Anyone seen any decent 27.5 wheelsets in the sales?

Not wanting to derail the thread with a not so stealthy ad but I’ve got a pair of Hope Tech Enduros with gold hubs that I was going to put in the classifieds if interested?

Thanks, might have to bite the bullet and just get that.

Haven’t bought MBR (or any mag) in a long time but remember years ago buying maybe 5 or 6 titles a month.

MBR – good for routes and kit tests but, as mentioned above, got samey after a while.
MBI – quite serious IIRC, like a MTB version of cycling weekly.
MTB PRO – excellent mag but didn’t last long, seem to remember it tried to pitch itself to the more experienced rider ‘For those in the know’ I think was it’s strap line.
    Total MTB?
What Mountain Bike – anything with Steve Worland, remember his Reprobate column? (or was that another mag?).
And of course Singletrack – quite liked the fact when it first came out that it was quite hard to find, like you were buying into a niche little club.

Stopped buying MBUK after it got too juvenile.

Also, can anyone remember a then unknown Kelly Brook modelling cycling shorts in a group test or did I just dream it?

    Anal Adria Adora Seine

Lovely vans (I may be a little biased).

Is yours like mine or the post 2021 facelift?
Adria are very good to deal with but make sure all your services are up to date and done within the correct time window for the warranty.
If it’s like mine then also fit some Alko (red) shock absorbers (they weren’t standard until the facelift), they are easy to diy and make for a much more settled tow.

We’ve had four vans – two Bailey’s, a Compass (Elddis) and our current Adria and tbh I wouldn’t go back to a British one. It’s not just the build quality that is better but Adria UK have been an absolute pleasure to deal with sorting a couple of warranty claims without question and it’s easy to speak to an actual person for info or just advice.

Contrast that to Elddis that I had to fight every step of the way to claim for a cracked rear panel (a known issue) as well as several other problems.

If I’m honest I also quite like the fact that our tin box is a bit different to all the others that you see.

    As we’re posting pictures.

Mine’s a 2019 and as others have said the best upgrade you can do (at least on the cheaper bikes) is the wheels – they are heavy and it makes it much more sprightly. I’ve got Mavic Allroad Elites on mine and they have put up with an incredible amount of abuse. I’m still on the original BB but have had to use carbon grease on the seatpost to stop it slipping.
Lovely bike but my head has been turned by the Fairlight Secan, maybe next year I’ll buy a frame and swap the bits over.

Oh this is me just now! Came off at the weekend on the Castle Crag descent in the Lakes (the piece of piss easy bit at the bottom after the stream crossing).
Cuts and bruises all over, trashed helmet but the worst thing is the pain just above my arse. No signs of damage or bruising but my god is it tender!
Had a 7hr drive the day after – that was fun.

    find something you fancy

    Oh and definitely this.
The best advice I ever heard regarding exercise is to pick something you enjoy!

52 here. I really struggle to maintain regular riding – I’ll have a good 2 – 3 weeks then life stuff happens and suddenly a week or more has gone by without touching it then I would feel crap on the bike when I got back on and angry/frustrated with myself.

I’ve lifted weights on and off since my teens but what has really helped lately has been concentrating on high intensity functional stuff (kettlebells, ring work etc). Pick say five exercises, do them in a circuit with minimal rest in between and see how many circuits you can do in a set time.

Have been pleasantly surprised recently at how strong I feel on the bike after a lay off.

Been a member for 20yr now. As mentioned above a lot of the sites are a bit soulless (lots of tarmac and gravel) but some are lovely like Borrowdale in the Lakes, also can be pricey but they are all kept to a very high standard.

We prefer the CL’s as they are (much) cheaper and tend to be quieter. Everything we need is in the van so as long as we’ve got electric and water, I’m happy.

This was at our favorite site in the Lakes on August bank holiday last year.

Interesting reading this. My bike came with Assegai MaxxTerra’s front and back (!) and while the grip is great they do drag a bit. Really liked the Bonty XR5/4 combo on my previous bike so am after something similar in Maxxis flavour – thinking Dissector on the rear as mentioned previously?

This is why I really liked the way Ibis specced their Ripmo AF that I’ve just bought.

Up until recently all models came with the same top end DVO suspension, decent wheels and finishing kit, (i.e, the important stuff) kit with different drivetrain/brake options giving an excellent base.

There’s still some cracking deals about if it’s the type of bike you’re after.

    Cycle4adventure at Hamsterley?

Thanks for the replies. Even without the batteries the bikes are just two heavy for them to manhandle into the back of a car or into the caravan. Might look into what decent folding ebikes are available.

Hmm, may have to think again. Looked at a video and even when at it’s lowest point it’s still waist/chest high (depending on height of car) which would still be a struggle.

Finally managed to get a good ride out on familiar terrain today (Hamsterley) with the Ripmo and was blown away by how good it was. I had much more confidence chucking it downhill – it has a really rowdy nature that eggs you on faster.
It also climbs well. Lock it out and you can winch your way up a fire road as well as any other bike but technical climbing (which I really enjoy) is excellent, the rear tyre really feels like it’s getting sucked into the ground.
It may not be lightweight (no long travel bike at this price will be) but it certainly doesn’t feel it to ride.

    faz71

I agonized over medium or large when getting my Ripmo but am so glad I went for large (I’m 5ft 9″). The stand over is the same for both sizes and with a 35mm stem it feels perfect for me. One thing I would say is it feels a lot bigger a bike than the Remedy and it’s no lightweight (34.5 pounds on my bathroom scales).
Also my lad has been on a M/L Bird Aeris for 3 years now since he was 15 but he was the same height as me at that age. My Remedy was a M/L and it did sometimes feel short especially compared to the Bird, I personally wouldn’t buy a M/L Remedy if he’s that height at 15 and still growing.

Just sold mine after 4 years and loved my time with it. As others have said it’s an excellent all-rounder which never felt out of it’s depth including some fairly chunky Lakes/Scotland stuff. I only got rid because I fancied a change but wanted something in a similar vein (long travel playful trail bike not a point and shoot Enduro sled) in 29er guise.
Ended up with an Ibis Ripmo AF (SLX/DVO suspension), a few places have them on sale and for £2.5k it’s a ridiculous amount of bike for the money.

I swapped the shock on my 2019 Remedy 7 to Fox DPX2 from TF tuned and it made a massive difference. I ride in the Lakes a fair bit also and the rear is now very compliant over bumps but still gives good support when pedaling. In fact the rear far outshines the standard Yari fork. It’s quite a compact shock so you shouldn’t have any clearance issues.

Am now selling the bike though to try something different with a coil shock.
