Love the first one.
Thought the trailer for 2 looked off the scale DREADFUL!
fatmaxFull MemberI haven’t read the whole thread. But six pages in, has anyone got any irrefutable evidence or facts about Pog doping?
Or just a load of STWers casting aspersions?
fatmaxFull MemberWorth having a look at the Fairlight look books and design info on their website to see the level of thought and detail that goes into each one e.g. Bentley Components metalwork at the dropouts and brake mounts. Two different geometry configuration per size, quality of finishing and paint etc. I’d spin it the other way – they’re super cheap compared to a custom frame.
3fatmaxFull MemberI’ve got an Enigma Etape – two and bit years old, so 32-34mm clearance, bolt axles etc. Superb bike – a super comfy cruiser. A bit of flex in the BB…go for the Evoke or a Signature model if you want something racier or stiffer.
As per others, I also have a Fairlight Secan gravel bike and I do think that (as an 853 tubed steel bike) it rides a little nicer than the Etape…slightly stiffer in the BB and has a slightly different and better ‘zing’ to the frame, and is equally as comfy.
You can’t go wrong with either to be fair. And I do prefer the looks of the Enigma.
fatmaxFull Member@scotroutes – now that might be something to consider…followed by Moffat toffee?
1fatmaxFull MemberThanks for the kind words folks, sincerely appreciated. We loved and have just had a beer together – we’re still buzzing.
As someone said on our Facebook post today, a gofundme campaign for better road surface between the Crook Inn and the bypass would be well supported!
Gary goes on hols on Saturday so we might not tweak the website / open entries before then, but RttS X will actually be on the solstice next year…so pencil June 21st 2025 into your diaries. We’ll think of something different / quirky / big to mark the occasion.
fatmaxFull MemberCome and say hello tomorrow folks – look forward to meeting you 👍
fatmaxFull MemberLots of folk seem to have a second brekkie (after the kirk hall) at the Waverley Wetherspoons before hitting the train home too.
1fatmaxFull MemberThere’s a few folk have bivvied on the beach before, or slept on the wooden benches, before heading off riding back to Newcastle or Carlisle. You might get a couple of hours. Dog walkers will be out and about 8ish, Cramond is still deserted at about 7ish when the riders have left the kirk hall and everyone has headed home. It’s got a bit of a flash mob feel – 2-5am lots of cyclists kicking about, 7am, no sign that it ever happened.
Last eshot from us coming tomorrow and weather hopefully looking OK at the moment 🙏🤞
4fatmaxFull MemberRIP Rob.
A warrior of a man – what an impact he (and Kevin Sinfield) has made. A truly awful disease 😢
fatmaxFull MemberI really recommend this podcast about coffee, with James Hoffman, even if you’re not a fan of Diary of a CEO. Really entertaining and informative. I think the reviews of 4 high street coffees and an independent is at about 35 minutes and well worth watching. You’ll all agree! 😂
fatmaxFull MemberI’ll be on 28mm tubeless tyres at 65psi. The roads are definitely a bit bobbly and rough, especially between the Crook Inn and Edinburgh bypass – the bit where you’re feeling tired. So some cushioning will be welcome.
The River Eden (?) that you cross between Carlisle and Gretna is tidal a fair bit inland, so I’ve always thought of it as a C2C…or enough of one to claim it!
Update eshot hopefully coming before the weekend, but basically we’re all prepped and ready to go. Just been in touch with Stewart Brewing today to get everyone’s sunrise free beer for the sea front 👍
fatmaxFull MemberHi folks. There’s no confirmation email as others have stated, and I think we say on the website somewhere – we just need to know rough numbers for the chippy and Fresh Start at Cramond Kirk Hall. Thanks so much for signing up 👍
1fatmaxFull MemberGot a Gore Endure waterproof for my birthday and liking it so far, though not had a full on deluge to test it I’m yet.
fatmaxFull MemberGreat…so we’ve got the same cabinet (plus Forbes, minus Yousef) that was failing on ferries, climate change targets, school standards, crime, health etc.
I actually quite like Swinney, strikes me as a decent and well-meaning man.
But we really need a general and Scottish parliament election to shake things up. Tories and SNP have been in power too long.
fatmaxFull Memberhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-68945445 nice bunch of folks! 🤔
fatmaxFull MemberI think Pog will do the Giro Tour double this year, as I don’t think he has anh serious competition in the Giro (would love G to win though) and can’t see JV being back to full fitness in time for July. Fair play – what a rider and seems a nice fella.
fatmaxFull MemberUsed Conti Race Kings in 29×2.0 on the Badger Divide and they were great 👍
1fatmaxFull MemberIf I was the opposition I’d want him be first minister in the lead up to any general election. He’s been inept in all of his previous roles, and made a huge error of judgement today, that could lead to him losing his job next week. If I was the opposition I wouldn’t want to face Kate Forbes as she seems more confident and competent that Useless and more likeable than Sturgeon/Salmond (any religious eccentricity aside).
Humza actually seems a nice enough fella…just incompetent!
fatmaxFull MemberYip, a marshall say that it was the most crashes they’d seen…maybe because the good weather was encouraging everyone to push on fast? Great day out
1fatmaxFull MemberI can take it for you – out at Cramond, 5 miles out but good bus service. Or work on George Street, two minutes from the station, and the basement has secure bike storage – if it was during normal working hours.
fatmaxFull Member@intheborders – most folk set off at say 7pm, and it’s a Saturday night. Very quiet roads until Moffat (B7076 is straight and flat), and only really supporting cars or vans of riders after that. It’s incredibly peaceful and quiet between Moffat and the centre of Edinburgh (the climb of the Devil’s Beef Tub being the highlight for many), and then dodging a few drunk folk is part of the fun. At the Cramond end it’s a bit of a flash mob feel – hundreds of cyclists milling around between 2 and 5am…and at 7am you wouldn’t know anyone had been there aside.
1fatmaxFull Member@scotroutes Colin – used to be a customer of you and Mark at The Bike Chain, so pop and say hello at Bitts Park
Dom and the team from Fairlight will be riding and showing off their Straels at Bitts Park and Stewart Brewing are confirmed for the free beer at Cramond seafront on the Sunday morning again 👍
fatmaxFull MemberThe wife watches it. I gave up years back due to the cringe. But I do like the interview episode, so will tune in for that. Tonight?
fatmaxFull MemberWhat @BadlyWiredDog said, 100% 👍
Any advice on how to snog Finnish triathletes (without having to go to Finland) very welcome!
2fatmaxFull MemberImpressive but there’ll always be the ” if WVA was fit” question over the dominance
I know he was focusing his season around Flanders and Roubaix but I think MvdP is a level above Wout now. Six monuments to one, a World title on the road in dominant fashion, and six cross World titles. I do wonder if WvA has tried to spread himself too thin at times – super domestique for JV etc. And wonder if he regrets gifting Laporte the win at Gent Wevelgem a few years back. Phenomenal talent but a bit of a bridesmaid if you compare him to MvdP (at the moment).
And I like Rob Hatch’s pronunciation – makes an effort to get it right at least. Speaks four languages fluently, so I’ll bow to his greater knowledge and linguistics!
fatmaxFull MemberThe Mark Sissons book Primal Endurance was an interesting read. Basically saying that folk shouldn’t do too much training at ‘tempo’ or the more extreme intensities, and that there’s lots to be gained by doing 80-90% of your training at aerobic intensity (as per your Garmin or ~180bpm minus your age) as that gives the greatest lung and heart capacity benefits without stressing the body too much. I’ve got pals doing x4 really intense Zwift races per week – and that sort of stress is bad for your body according to Sissons. Lots of articles suggesting the same is good for – polarised training, 80:20 etc – where intensity should be included but in low volumes.
He’s a big advocate of more stretching, weights, core exercises, improving your balance – all key things to work on when you get to my age – 50.
As suggested above – as long as you’re pretty balanced in what you do, luck and genetics are likely to be bigger factors for most folk with regard to when the grim reaper appears.
fatmaxFull MemberAnyone out in Roubaix today, riding the sportive and watching the pros race today/tomorrow?
fatmaxFull MemberCramond Scout transport is now taking bookings if folk need Edinburgh to Carlisle on the Saturday, or Cramond to Carlisle on Sunday morning.
They take people, bikes and bags 👍
fatmaxFull MemberBaxter Dury in May in Edinburgh, and Nick Cave in Glasgow Hydro in November – very excited for both. Haven’t see Dury before and seen Nick Cave three times – with the Bad Seeds, with Warren Ellis (Carnage tour) and his In Conversation gigs.
fatmaxFull MemberSome good tips from @eulach and @kittyr.
Read the book Sleep, by Nick Littlehales – sleep guru / advisor to Man City and United, Team Sky, Team GB etc. Very helpful top tips.
But the main take away for me was that everyone sleeps in 1.5hr cycles of deep and shallower sleep. How and when you go to bed and wake up from these cycles is key. If you search he’s on various podcasts too.
The 1.5hr cycles knowledge, plus his sleep hygiene advice, plus some Headspace meditation before bed has transformed how I feel.
fatmaxFull MemberThree pairs of Hiut and I love them – would buy again. Great quality and fit for me.
No experience of HebTroCo and I think they’ve stopped their 36″ / unfinished inside leg, which I need.
fatmaxFull MemberI can’t see the cargo bib knickers or the variable length legs?
fatmaxFull MemberThe SPD version was about £105 on Wiggle the last time I looked. I’m tempted by that price…
fatmaxFull MemberI’ve just turned 50 in December and last year felt like harder work than normal to get fit.
I had an Ironman-distance triathlon in July and a trip to the Alps (road biking) to train for. I’ve always felt that 4-5 consecutive weekends of 50-60 mile rides on top of normal commuting and social rides was enough to give me some fitness and ‘cycling legs’. But with no other apparent external factors, it just seemed to take twice as long last year to get comparably fit.
Hey ho, inevitable and nothing to worry about. My old man said it was the same age for him. He took up marathon running to get fitter / maintain his fitness, and was running 3.30 marathons in his early 50s. So just makes me want to double down and do more cycling!! Also doing some reading, and from how I feel, I definitely need to do some weights / exercises to keep strength, more core work, and more stretching / pilates / yoga.
So very happy to have got to 50 feeling very healthy and with modest fitness, but now want to do more to maximise fun and longevity!1fatmaxFull MemberSomewhere in Scandinavia for me I think.
A pal at work (mid 30s, no kids) did a really simple trip. Flew to the south of Spain and cycled home to Newcastle (via the Ijmuden ferry), over three months, matching his route to a few different Tour de France stages and generally following his nose. Credit card touring. He’s a super fit lad but just did ~60 miles a day, easy pace, stopping for coffee, cake, beer as often as needed. Sounded and looked amazing.
