i’ve got an S60 D5 and get about 45mpg doing the school/shopping/work runs. Went to france last year and fully loaded with 2 adults 2 kids, loads of stuff and 2 bikes hanging off the back while doing 55-60mph the whole trip i got 52mpg.

You wont get as much mpg as a 2ltr passat etc but its a much heavier car with a dig engine, and its worth it just to hear the ROAR when you floor it! 8)

how much diesel is in it? my missus ran my volvo down to the point where the trip computer said 70 miles to empty tank, it started the following morning then conced out after a hundred yards. Turned over ok but wouldnt fire, added £30 of diesel fired up no probs it was only -5 overnight. diesel turns to sludge at low temp and little in tank.

for £70ish you can get 2x torches 4x batteries a charger and decent bar mounts direct from dealextreme. The chargers rated up 2 240v so just chop the 2 pin connector off and fit a standard uk plug. I’ve run a pair for 2 years with no probs. Build quality and light output nowhere near as good as trouts but there cheap and powerful enough for most night riding.

You can get onto the trails but bare in mind weve had snow, thaw, snow, freeze, thaw a bit. So it’ll be snow over ice. Also mobile coverage is very patchy. I wouldnt. Clwyds were still rideable yesterday though.

i would, i forgot on my 03 plate fiesta and it promptly blew the porceline inner clean out of the threaded metal plug body :(I was lucky as it didnt strip the thread in the cyclinder head 😀 which would have involved great expense to repair!

DT78, you've got or are getting cubital tunnel syndrome, basically the nerves where they run through the elbow joint are being strangled, if this is left untreated it can lead to permnent loss of use of the fingers and as you say possible muscle wastage.

If you use a PC for any length of time each day you need to stop or reduce to a bare minimum and for no more than an hour at a time max. I would also stop riding the bike for a couple of weeks as the jolting/vibration can aggrivate it.

Get a shed load of ibruprofen to reduce the inflamation in the joint.

If after the above it doesnt go away you need to get refered to a orthopedic surgeon.

Dont just think it will go away on its own, it rarley does and I've got the surgery scars on both elbows to prove it!!

I run a P7 DX torch on my lid, this is the second winter of regular use and it's never failed me, I've even dropped it a few times and 4 £50 for battery, charger and light u cant go wrong! there also quite floody so if your other light has a tight beam a torch would compliment it well.

you mention your kids, my dad was in a similar position years ago, he only had an hours commute but again on busy roads. Now he is a dead laid back guy but after a couple of months we used to almost dread him coming home. Dont get me wrong he wasnt violent or aggresive but it put him in a bad mood all the time. eventually we moved and he was back to normal.

Oh, and to state the obvious you'll spend almost as long in the car as in work, not my idea of fun!!!

Molgrips – you miss the point. You can want whatever you do want – its just wrong to say you need a car – it is always a choice unlike food or shelter.

No one said you cannot have a car – just be clear it is not s nessesity but a luxury

Now normally I agree with your point of view but im afraid having a car IS a nessesity, theres no way I could get the kids to school and get to work on time any other from of non car based transport just wouldnt work

firstly get a diesel, volvo if you want bags of room and they NEVER die or a peugeot HDI diesel, make sure they both had regular oil/filter changes. I've got both, the peugeot (406)has just gone past 100,000 and still regularly gets 50 -60mpg on a run and you regularly see them still going with 2 -300,000 on the clock, thats why so many are now taxis. for the volvo get the D5 version, even in diesel form its a rocket ship!

use under felt first in one direction then cover with the roofing felt. try and lay it on a sunny day, cut your felt to length then leave in the sun for a bit, helps soften it up for laying
