Evans are doing the Altura Attack 3/4’s for £50 which is cheaper than Merlin even with the extra 10%.

My commuter Soul has 700C wheels with 42mm CX tyres, single speed 41×16 and On One 26er carbon forks. It works for me but I fancy some 700×37 Sport Contacts for some more speed.

As an apprentice TV repair man I was often introduced to “Mr. Megger” the insulation tester. First time it was connected to the workshop door handle when I was late, second time it was connected to the other end of a mains lead they asked me to put a plug on. Also had match heads put in the end of the soldering iron which explode when you turn the iron on.

Best one was the Honda Acty van joke. It only had key locks on the drivers door and rear tailgate. So, if you parked it tight into the corner of the car park, exited by the passenger door locking it by pushing the button down, the only way to get in was by bouncing it out of the corner to gain access to one of the key locks!

As a counterpoint, I bought the 4GB slim version a couple of years ago. Purely wanted a games machine (not a media center) and I never play online. After many system update downloads, game updates and game saves there is still around 3GB left. I’ve not missed the extra storage but I knew exactly what I wanted when purchasing.

Also be aware that there are USB slots which you can plug a USB stick into for more storage space.

We have kept GP’s for the daughters for a number of years now and I reckon they are the perfect pet. Cute, lots of character and quite vocal!

Ours stay outside in a good hutch all year apart from deep winter if it goes below freezing. They have the run of the garden as it is now pug proofed.

Poo is compacted pellets so not particularly unpleasant to deal with.

There is an easier way which I successfully tried at the weekend. Leave the wheel and pads in but unbolt the calliper from the frame/forks and swing it off the disc.

My Shimano SLX discs are 1.7MM thick. If you get your feeler gauges out and set them at 1.5MM, pop them between the pads and squeeze the lever this will move the pads in a bit and you will get an earlier bite point on the disc. You can experiment with different widths and if it gets too tight just push the pads back and go again.

Repeat when pads wear a bit more.

I ride in winter with 3mm single lined surfing gloves. Single lined means they only have the jersey coating on the inside. The outside is like a finely textured / smooth finish which sheds water immediately and reduces wind chill. They are also glued and blind stitched so totally waterproof. Good grip as well.

Possibly, but I rely heavily on my commuter and don’t enjoy fixing chains in the wet, cold and dark – which I have found I no longer have to do if I change my chain frequently.

Should also mention that I change my chain the second it gets to 1% stretch as I have snappage paranoia.

Oh lots of lube. Lots of mud and crap as well!

I’m also one hell of a torquey mofo.

Half links tend to stretch significantly as the side plates are not flat – the bend tends to straighten out. So I’d rather replace it at the same time as the chain.

My commuter is single speed and runs an 1/8th inch single speed chain, not 7/8 speed.

Hence the requirement for some 1/8th inch half links.

Yes I know, but I get through a chain every eight weeks on the commuter and each one needs a half link.

Works out a lot cheaper if I can split a half link chain down into 40 or so half links.

I don’t want to run a full half link chain as the two I have tried have had really noisy and rattly rollers.

PAYG doesn’t have to be expensive. Giffgaff do a £5 a month goodybag with unlimited personal use texts.

No call time included but they don’t seem to actually speak to each other anyway.

I have one of the SS specific white ones running Salsa Cromoto rigid forks – it’s the best bike I have ever had. For me the 29er thing has been a bit of a revelation.

i would advise against cheap in this pastime

I would advise that expensive is not always better, particularly in this pastime.

Yes, I’ve got Prowlers on my 29er Inbred. My experience has been that they are great on everything except thick mud – just not knobbly enough. Other than that all good.

You need to remove the axle by undoing the cone and locknut on one side and withdrawing it from the hub. You will then see a 12mm allen bolt which holds the freehub on.

Can’t remember if they are LH or RH thread though!

Salsa CroMoto steel forks, about £70 from Wiggle. Lovely stainless dropouts, paint and build quality. I’ve got OO steel and carbon rigids as well but the CroMoto’s are my favourite.

Spa Cycles do ACI & Sapim at good prices but silver only. I’ve used both brands with no problems.

OO/PX had a load of Sapim at good prices including black.

Mine failed about 3 years ago. Took me a while to find the problem which was a crack in the diaphragm of the pressure gauge. It was OK up to about 30psi then started hissing. Topeak sent a new gauge FOC though which was very kind.

Not just yet, this is an experiment. An experiment that might go horribly wrong…….

Mind you, if it goes that wrong I’ll just whack on some slicks and have a Cotic Bad Boy, if you see what I mean.

So all in all you didn’t like it much then!

I don’t intend riding this bike hard off road, it will be my commuter bike that can handle a bit of hardpack path and mellow trailage.
