Too true ^ There’s a time and place for horses, and I really don’t think it’s on the road. More likely 8pm, Sunday, on the dinner plate… 🙂 mmmm

A cyclist has a far larger brain (usually) than any horse and can interpret situations far differently. It’s totally different.

Mmm just from what i’ve found horse riders tend to be fairly self centered and not too bothered about how they affect other people. As I say, riding up A roads at rush hour – selfish and unnecessary

I dont even have a dog, my point really was on a bike it is really very unpleasant to ride through mud and defecation.

    p.s learn to quote

Im on the OP’s side. Horses are beasts and should not be allowed on the road. At the very least there should be a minimum age as I often see young girls (<10) riding on A roads at 5pm, holding traffic up and generally being dangerous. It’s very unsafe.

I also agree that horse owners should have to clear the poop. If I eat only vegetables (no meat), does that make it socially acceptable for me to go for a poo on the road? Just pull over in my car and squat at the edge and lay a few bricks? no. It does not. Furthermore I have seen the same young riders riding on the pavement, and therefore defecating there too, which is quite honestly disgusting.

Then I come to the delights of bridleways. Here is the situation.

John walks his dog every day. He clears up after his dog every day. It is november. It is very wet and muddy on the bridlepath John walks down. John notices that this is probably due to the large amount of horses that are ridden up and down it. John decides it would be best, to preserve his shoes and save him having to clean his dog before work, to take an alternative line, and walks slightly off the path where it is not so wet.
The next day, John comes along the same bridleway. Other walkers have decided to take his line as well, in order to avoid the mud and horse faeces.
A week later, John comes down the bridleway once more. His line is no more. The horse riders decided so that their beasts didn’t get wet feet (because that would be a crying shame), they would walk down the path where John and his fellow dog walkers walk. It is now the same as the main path. Covered in shite and muddy as ****.

And that is why horses annoy me so much. They destroy perfectly serviceable paths. They walk on pavements and poo on roads. They hold up traffic.

    I could go on

my proposal is a mass culling of these monstrosities, do it the French way, and we can have cheap Chevaux meat for years to come.

What I really like about ST compared to others is the lack of product review – if I want to buy a bike there are 100’s of reviews online or I can come on a forum for some opinion. I much prefer reading about what to do with my bike (as I own one and do not intend on buying a full sus 29er for instance).

I like UK routes (a lot), nice pictures, product reviews for kit and other parts, and maintenance guides.
Kit reviews I particularly like though.

I think one section for bike reviews is the max, maybe 3 bikes a magazine. Because seriously who buys the magazine if they are thinking about buying a bike? They’re more likely to buy MBR or What MTB? surely than a magazine which is clearly geared towards riding.. ooh and heres a bit about new bikes because we have to kinda thing.

On another forum I post on, a guy just had a burglar take the tiles off his roof, and cut a 4×2 foot hole in his ceiling in order to take his bike out his garage.

Theives will stop at nothing if they know the goods are there. A shed (despite any security claims) just really isn’t up to it.

quick question regarding my 1 x 9 setup

Gammut or Renthal for a 36t chainring? been running just the middle ring on my hollowtech for a while now and need a bit more oomph for the flat stuff. Renthal I can get cheap through work (trade) but gammut I could special order cheap as well.

    Not sure which is better

It’s kinda weird but I think some people have really bad experiences with Endura, and some really good. I find their products really nice, long lasting and cheap, proper decent kit. Gore I wouldn’t touch with a barge pole (knowing the trade price of it…) at the retail price.

But yeah, for me, cant fault Endura. But others loathe it.

cant imagine anything more awkward than being one of those women mouthing silently to nothing, and seeing people walk by.

meh, paramedics want people to wear helmets so they stop going to so many head injuries.

So ban smoking, they can stop going to so much breathing difficulties?

Im sorry but this can go on forever. There are good and bad points and everyone has their stance. As it is at the moment I don’t really think it’s the foremost priority for the government to resolve this issue.

great guys, thanks for the info.

Funny you should say that Ruscle, I saw one on a bike just the other day and thought why not! Again may be heavy though.

Like the idea of a rape alarm and fishing line, lightweight, cheap and easy. But the bike integration into a tarp has to be the best thing really. May have a play with just a tent outer and see if I can rig something up!

    thanks again!

    wow! well i’ll also say

Roof mounted bike racks .. …. Remember!! watch out for height limits!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Twice now had two roof racks at work with 2 bikes on each absolutely destroyed. One vehicle had the two front wheels and forks written off both bikes, £2000 of damage. The other bent the frame, and the same as above, so a little more damage. Hearing that sickening crunch would just be the worst feeling so make damn sure you remember!!!!!

but having it fall off…… that sucks big time. So dangerous to other road users too

I really need some advice as I haven’t actually bivvied yet properly, got basically all the kit now (had to get a bigger dry bag as my bag is 1000 weight), but around me there is nowhere ‘remote’ or so I think.

Im fairly near Brighton so not sure what to do. I know a few spots which might be OK but my biggest concern is waking up in the morning to find the bike gone!!!! Not sure what to do.

I thought so! I ordered a 13L one yesterday (as my 8l was too small for sleeping bag) which will come tomorrow, as well as a few other bits, and bungee is my plan too.

    thanks for the info

I have created mine out of a hoseclip and a beehive one:

Not the best picture but basically I got a timber bracket (1mm thin bit of aluminium with two holes on each end) and bent that so it was a bit like a trapezium. Then slotted this between the hose clip (which has rubber so as not to damage the frame). Then I tigtened the hose clip. I then put a long bolt through the existing chain device (originally a BB mounted one) and a few bolts, fixed it all together.

It stays in place nicely but has good flex so it keeps the chain on but will happily flex and move to adjust to the chain movement which is great.

What frame bags are people using?? Are there any cheap (and I mean <£50) alternatives to custom ones and/or expensively branded ones?

Fox launch pro are nice. All down to comfort, but you’ll find you rarely fall off with pads on, but the time you forget your pads you will fall off many times indeed.

Ive been running 1 x 9 for a few months now and must admit I love it. Not having a rear mech to worry about jamming up, cleaning, or even just that extra space on the bars is so nice.

Im on 11-32 and 32, but think I need a 36 up front, it’s no good on steep downhill sections.

I ride around the routes and trails that comprise the route there every week, all weather, in the dark. They are fun. So, enjoy it! It’s some great riding and it’s a great event so just have fun really.

I wish I could ride but all the tickets were sold out.

Ah wow, that’s good. Maybe I will loosen it a bit then even.

    Thanks for your help

    faaz

really? That’s great because I just read that the QR skewer should make it tight to the frame, and obviously because only 1 spins forwards it would never loosen right off.

It’s fine now and seems to spin ok, that’s a relief!!

On a side note, the front one is making a sort of grinding noise when im doing probably 25mph on the road. Means it needs a service? It’s not really loud but it is there for sure.

    thanks for your reassuring comment!

Quite wrong really. From sheffield park you are within an hour of the south downs way, with some decent cross country routes, and if you can get into brighton, stanmer park and wild park way, very decent singletrack woodland decents.

If you have the car, definitely head to Friston forest, disappointment would not be an option!! Also have a look at http://www.deersleapbikes.com/about-deers-leap-park/park-map.aspx – which has some fairly decent north shore in the central woodland.

And what he said ^^ about Ashdown forest. I drive past there, salivating, looking at the gorgeous singletrack and just wishing those stupid people would come to their senses. Get this. HORSES are allowed but BIKES are not allowed due to them damaging the environment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most ridiculously stupid thing ever??????
