wtf? even the ‘good samaritan’ could have paralysed the 2 year old, and if you watch, lets her head just flop to the floor? wtf?

how can people be brought up to just think it’s acceptable to ignore this? I suppose easily when you see that mother and daughter walk by… such a terrible impression.

why are these things so damn expensive? Honestly? people must have made some themselves. Admittedly they will be crap, but £250 for what is essentially the thing which goes under your office chair seems extortionate

sorry to burst your bubble Faaz but some of us do chose to ride in the dark without lights (I do more than once most weeks), if you know where you are going on familiar trails it is perfecty practical.

But how when you can’t see your hand in front of your face?

What exactly is the point then?

Well, I doubt the guy decided that tonight, as he was not afraid of the dark, he would ride without lights… I’m not afraid of the dark, but I ride with lights. It’s more of a practical thing than an afraid of the dark thing surely?

like I said, I’m not afraid of the dark, sounds like the bloke you met wasn’t either.

Not really the point though, is it?

Interesting clothes line. And you should take those green bags to the tip.

    Nice bike, though 🙂

It’s really not. I nearly always turn my lights off when climbing. I’m not scared of the dark tho.

As do I, when there is moonlight. This was no moonlight, in woods….

    no lights? it’s pitch black?

you’re telling me that isn’t odd.

    how odd.

done it, and it worked fine. 19″ frame. front wheel off, in from passenger side, ram forks against far seatbelt, shove rear end in, push seat back.

    Chuck in rear wheel, away.

weirdest for me was one night out with some guys, came fast down a hill around a corner and there was a guy on an apollo, coming up the trail, no lights, perfectly normal, nodded and said hello. It was pitch black…

    very odd.

what kind of device? maybe you could get a guide on the chainstay but otherwise it’s going to be hard.

reevil – think I have seen you on MBR forums.

    take a look at http://brightonmtb.org/

I rode with these guys a few times, haven’t recently but sure I will, every Thursday starting 7pm til about 9pm.

Look for ‘sportscentre’ at Sussex Uni, it’s on ‘sportscentre road’. You can park here and pay and display, or it’s free after 6pm. Best thing to do is ride with a local to find the best trails and routes. The website above was created by the people who made most of the trails, so is a good place to start 🙂

Nice one Fox, thanks for that. Going to see/ride it later today, doubt I will be disappointed as I have never owned a full sus.

One large issue is flats or SPD’s though? Because I currently ride SPD’s on my Rockhopper, but this is a bit more ‘all mountain’ and I don’t know if I would see the benefits when going down, rather than up. However, I have tried switching to flats and I just don’t feel as secure any more. Probably will go SPD’s but food for thought huh.

    try emailing them

oh wait, their email doesn’t work and they don’t reply on facebook.

Hm best thing to do is not try to be pro. I did a fairly small jump the other day probably both wheels off the ground about a foot, twisted the bars a little bit probably by accident, hit the ground about 20mph on my shoulder. Luckily nothing broken but bad bruising and a gash in my shoulder (which it took 4 hours to find out about!)

The best thing to do is practise, but dont make ramps out of bricks and woods, get something soft to fall on like woodland and grass. Try to incorporate them in the flow of your riding, if you hit what you would normally drop off at 20mph, you will jump off it instead as the momentum just carries on.

I feel inclined to buy it as I will save so much money.

no, you’ll just have spent a bit less…

I take it you work in a bike shop?

    yeah, quite a big one..!

I guess I knew the response would be quite biased, perhaps that is what I wanted 🙂 However, go for another mountain bike (140 travel, AM), or a roadie – something which I am not currently ‘into’. With winter coming up, roadie is sensible, however I know with a Zesty I would happily hop on a plane to the alps next summer!

Good point on the saving, it’s still a heck of a lot of money, but has such a large amount off.

@rob – lol? link was kinda random.

I did find that thread actually, looked really decent, thanks for that.

I think for the money it is very well specced, compare it to the 514, you lose 800grams OK, but downgrade to SLX chainset as opposed to xtr rear mech, XT chainset all round. Also revelation’s on the 514 as opposed to rlc’s.

I may be getting one built up for a try and if it’s nice I may well buy it, then. It fits my needs perfectly.

    thanks all

I’ve ridden some pretty hard stuff and my top guide works fine. Ramped ring as well.

I’d lose a few links… sounds like you’re pretty slack if you’re still having problems.

I did some walking there and if you like barren stuff on top there is some nice stuff near the gliding club (?).

Also did a bit quite far north but in the long mynd obviously, was just a massive rock garden. Not sure exactly where but would be… interesting… on a bike 😀

I get fed up with people saying the instant it rains..

    “OH RAIN AGAIN”

    and

    “TYPICAL BRITISH WEATHER”

it’s like… hang on… ok it hasn’t been 40 degrees but it hasn’t rained for 2 weeks now!

It genuinely does not rain that often!! 1 in every 10 days is what I heard…

I watched the video on youtube from Evans as I find them fairly simple, but it didn’t mention the limit screws.

Anyway needless to say I had a little play because they weren’t marked, and couple of turns has sorted the problem. Bit of scraping in gear 2 but it’s the best I can do, and I rarely sit in 2 for a long time.

Thanks for the tips and links.

On a side note look at this:

Spot the cheeky cut at 1:46 ? Lol… obviously it wasn’t a 2 minute job.

    thanks

Or about 35 quid. Though obviously that won’t be good enough for STW.

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=32396

But of course, this being STW there are three basic rules to follow:

    1. Always disagree with anything anyone else says.

    2. Never buy anything unless it’s ridiculously expensive.

    3. When in doubt, ridicule the idea that any sort of ‘special tool’ bar a hammer and a half-brick is worth using. ‘I rebuilt the cylinder head on my Ferrari using home-made allen keys and a sledgehammer’

But anyway, isn’t it more that sometimes, carbon bits and bobs, things that strip easy like early HT crank pinch bolts etc a torque wrench is worth having. Other times it’s not. Try thinking beyond the black and white.

And as for spending over £100 on a torque wrench, yeah, of course you’ll get a higher quality bit of kit for that, but equally a cheaper, but properly calibrated one will still do the job, particularly if you’re not using it that much.

Well you just broke rule 1 and 2 which is rather funny.

I wouldn’t say that CRC one is decent. Sounds lame but i’ve never even heard of cyclo……. reviews aren’t bad though

Im sure i’ve got one in the workshop just I don’t know where.

I’m saving up for one. I reckon if I can put aside a tenner a month for ten years then that should be just about enough…

Have a look? A decent one will set you back at least £100… that’s quite a bit of cash for a tool!

I agree that torque settings are to cover the manufacturer so they can obviously see whether something has been over done. But take for example my grips and brake levers, I only tighten them so that when I pull them very hard they don’t slip at all. No more. So, if I did it any less, I wouldn’t be able to use them – as they would slip, and thus, even if it is below torque, it can’t damage the bars. True?

I think I am a fairly good judge on what 5nm is, maybe 10 too, 5 isn’t much at all, which is pedals I think, just over what I would say is a normal tightness, 10 is rather tight though.

Interesting to hear what others say though. If I could find mine I would use it just to be safe, but at the minute I don’t see a need.

Don’t need more than 9 gears I find, if you’re relatively fit!

Not sure about teeth up the front though. Tempted to go 36 but know it would screw me on the climbs. Can’t see much difference going to 34 though from 32 so not sure. Just find when on flats it’s limiting me a bit on 32.

Falls off still in big hits and fall offs etc, but that’s to be expected.

If it doesn’t always keep it on, maybe it needs looking at. A big hit is the last place you want to drop a chain.

Mmm I run chain quite loose not baggy but only just tight on smallest ring. Maybe need to lose a couple of links. When I said big drops I meant big falls, just worded it badly. Came off other day and it fell off and then it’s quite hard to get back on as the guide is so close to the chainring.

The superstar is decent for general XC. I tried my 1×9 setup without any guide and it was bad, kept falling. But now got a superstar and e.13 guide mixed together to form a downtube mounted guide which works a treat.

Falls off still in big hits and fall offs etc, but that’s to be expected.

For internet, playing movies and the like and basically anything fairly standard, it’s brilliant. So much quicker than Windows too.

But as soon as you get technical it gets hard and you end up needing to ram stuff through the terminal all the time, makes it ALMOST feel unfinished. With a bit of knowledge you can work round it, but for a 24/7 every day PC I am not too sure. It would be a challenge!

lol you guys are taking this a bit serious.

No one here is going to introduce a law to ban horses now are they, you cant honestly think I was serious.

Anywhoo nick3216, whoever said I promote cycling side by side? I think that’s dangerous, stupid and downright rude. Happily do it when no traffic about but soon as a car appears I’ll pull in.

and mrmo, im loving my habitual law breaking, helps me get from A to B quicker 🙂
that said, horses riding on the pavement isn’t legal? or am I wrong? appreciate it doesn’t kill 2500 people but they aren’t innocent!

    5 o clock tonight, a **** queue a mile long going 5 mph on a fast 60mph A road

    guess what??

a **** horseBOX trying to overtake 2 horses.

resolution: introduce new law – horses and horseboxes on the road (throw in caravans too why not) between 1 and 3 in the morning ONLY

Otherwise there’s a bounty on them.

    fair?
