Thanks Sharkbait, I’l head over to Navitron.

Stoner, it is a very smart boiler, the CEO of the Uk company comes out personally when they’re commissioned and he’s happy to answer your questions over the phone. It’s coupled to a thermal store that is a buffer/ unvented cycler/immersion all combined. Apparently they never go wrong.

His is installed without a buffer, although there is a standard HW tank in the house. It doesnt cycle as much as I thought it did. instead it seems run quite a lot through the day, possibly on fairly low fuelling rate.

Thats what I’ve read and been told they constantly monitor everything and burn accordingly. The servicing does seem very good value as they do spend a lot of time cleaning and checking everything out to make sure it’s working to its optimal performance.

We’re in a part of the world where most companies won’t bother coming to quote – not sure why. But we’ve got quote for the OkoFen and one for a Strebel on the way, the Windhager which is the other ‘best make’ is the only one we’ve not been quoted for.

    Honking

Haven’t heard that term in ages.

Nice to see it’s still used.

So I had my tyres and rims put together and fitted at the local tyre shop.

After paying I had a brief conversations that went:

Him: “So, you going on holiday then”
Me: “No, I got them because I don’t want to be caught out”
Him: giving me a wry smile (probably thinking stupid towny) “it doesn’t snow much round here, you know”
    Me “Yes, I know”

After that I left feeling a bit sheepish, I bloody hope we get some good cold weather/frost/ice.

So the moral of this story is I’m buying a trolly jack!

I’m a huge fan of stopping and have found Swisstop pads are really good and they last.

They’re expensive but they are good.

Got 4 Conti WinterContacts sitting in the van waiting for the rims to show up.

Looking forward to the ‘reassurance’ if nothing more of putting them on the car.

I nearly bought the Nokains, but as it’s more likely to be icey / generally crappy and wet here I opted for the Contis as they perform better in the conditions we’ll experience.

Now I’m thinking I should have opted for run flats as there’s usually not much space for a spare – might have to buy one of those silly flat things just in case!

@kyrton, yes, we left London in September for a new life on the Llyn Peninsular. A total lifestyle change from a well paid, relatively easy jobs in the ‘creative industries’ to starting up a coffee shop/bakery.

I’ve been THINKING since October and after a drive up and over a 20% hill to get home in sleet n Saturday made me decide I NEED some.

We live in North Wales in the Coast, snow’s not a massive issue here but wet, icy country roads are. Droppin Eye Jnr of at nursery involves a 5 mile drive done a single track lane with tight bends and varying gradients.

FUN FUN FUN in the dry but probably GNARLY GNARLY GNARLY in poor conditions.

Don’t get the surgeon to chip

Thought I’d use the chips to surpress weeds and kill of the ivy that covering the ground in the woods. Is that a bad idea?

£650 to clear 5 trees (1 Sycamore, 2 Yews, 1 wild Bay, 1 nearly dead Elm) and 2 massive Rhododendrons with logs and a whole load of chips was alright.

It’ll take 3 of them one day to do the lot. He’ll be working in the area as he’s based in Chester so my job will be added on to the back of another.

I’d give it a go myself but all the trees except the bay are as high as the house and in spitting distance of it. I’ll practise my chainsaw skills on small trees in well away from the house. 8O

So far on my list I’ve got

    1. mini Mattlock – fibreglass handle
    2. Fullsize Mattlock – Beech Handle
    3. A puck whetstone
    4. 60″ breaking/digging bar
    5. Bacho hand axe – wooden handle
    6. A large pruning saw – folding one

for general clearing and to tame nature etc.

We’ve got a tree surgeon coming to clear 5 trees which will be logged/chipped and left for me to deal with at some point.

Can you leave logs lying around? Should they be split and stored as soon as possible or can I just leave them until I’m ready.

Lots to suggestions to think about, keep them coming!

Did my first lot of clearing today with the brushcutter. There quite a few thick shrubs and saplings left which will need a saw to them.

I’ll have to borrow a few different tools to see which I like/can work with.

Once the garden is cleared. The real work begins!

Any tips for digging out stumps?

Do you have a decent folding pruning saw yet, very versatile, useful for lots of what you’ll be doing.

    No, can you recommend one?

I use my iMac for work and have been running Yosemite on the public Beta for about 8 weeks now and it’s pretty good.

No issues apart from Linotype FontExplorer X and Handbrake. Even Adobe CS2014 is running very nicely on it, which is a massive surprise.

@bol we’ve got a oil fired Rayburn that does the water and electric heaters in each room. The wibdows aren’t great either, the original sash windows are in goosed and the plastic ones are pretty cheap and nearly all the units have blown.

The house hasn’t been lived in for over a year and looks like it needs a right going over. The 7 years of RHI pavements should pay for the heating, plumbing installation and contribute to a chunk of the new windows. If we get it for 12 years as I’ve heard someone local has the tarriffs should cover all the work carrierd out to make it qualify which will mean we only have to spring got the kitchen and bathrooms.

Plus if we can wait until next June we’ll qualify for 5% VAT on the whole job.

It’s a sustainable minefield this boiler lark. It all depends on whether we can insulate the house enough to quality for the tariffs in the first place.

I’m hoping digging out/insulating the ground floor with underfloor heating throughout the ground floor, replacing all the windows and fully insulation the loft will be enough.

Is a points calculation somewhere or is it all relative to the property in question?

Is it worth getting a 2nd hand 450 or is it likely to be goosed?

Thanks for the comments, I’ll do a search for the list.

Can you know tell me what the deal is with hot water, do they do one but. a day and that’s stored in a tank? I just thninv about the summer months when the heating will be off.

I’m coming from a terraced house in London to one with only mains electric in almost the middle of nowhere, so there’s a lot to learn.

I was astonished and horrified at how some London cyclists behave

You should see how some cab/van/lorry/bus/car/motorcycle drivers/riders behave.

I ride daily from Leyton to Kensington and and the proportion of RLJ and general cycle based knobbery generally low.

Some people are knobs and they happen to ride bikes. That’s all there is to it.

Pickford is a good recommendation. That being said try and find a company local to your new place in Wales, always good to try and support local business.

I did am thinking about going for a Welsh company but we’d like everything packed as well, so I’m not sure how that would work.

Would they stay in their truck, a Hotel etc. Plus the minute they find out we’re moving to Absersoch, they’d add Tw4t Tax as they probably think we’re those well heeled types who sail boats and drive Range Rovers.

    eyerideit

Strangely, I’ve always found the fact that Pickfords were responsible for breaking anything that they had packed rather focused their minds.

That’s what I’ve heard they seem to be well recommended.

Thanks Snowy I’ll drop Alan an email to see if he can give us a quote.

We’re moving to the Llyn Peninsular – We’ll be in Abersoch  until we buy somewhere.

Removal companies generally aren’t as careful with your stuff as you are

We stayed in their chalet last year in Morzine for PPdS.

Rob’s a good guy and very good rider. We rode with him and his sons the afternoon we got to Morzine and had a brilliant time.

I’d really like attend one of his guided rides but I’ve just not had the time this year.

Bet he didn’t ‘pay’ for them either.
