Bookmarking thread as similar problem with even smaller feet.

Specialized defrosters do come in size 36 and 37 but it doesn’t seem like anyone stocks them. I was thinking of asking a dealer to see if they can order them in, have done that with 5:10 before.

Northwave do 37. I ordered some from Evans last week but they forgot to tell me they weren’t in stock and forgot to tell me that they’d put the delivery date back by the month. I wasn’t convinced they would have them in before the summer so cancelled the order. Shame because they were much cheaper!

If I find any I’ll post on this thread.

Depending on where you live… you can ride through Malin Bridge, up to just before Worrall, down to Beeley woods to oughtibridge then ride up through/get lost in Wharncliffe. Alternatively you can ride out through Hillsborough Park and enter Beeley woods behind the Burger King/McDonalds at junction between Penistone Road and Herries road (signposted to Oughtibridge).

But you should explore the Peak District. Ride out on the city link through Ecclesall park to Ringinglow and explore Houndkirk moor, Blackamoor, totley moor. it’s all quite dry (relatively speaking).

I think what Pook says is PDMTB are working on improving the bridleway, not that they are getting people doing community service to do the work.

Speaking of volunteers, the bridleways coming up from Hope and Gores/Lockerbrook descent are 100 times better thanks to PDMTB and Bike Garage’s efforts over the last couple of weeks. Got to the bottom dry for the first time I can remember. Will be taking some days annual leave to come help at the next ones. They are good fun and so satisfying seeing the positive results of your own handiwork.

I wouldn’t ride it if it’s boggy in the summer either. We’ve had a wet summer. It’s hugely eroded. there are so many other better trails to be ridden this time of year that don’t have such a negative impact on the surface. Try out some of the recently repaired trails rather Ladybower or maybe the loop from Edale over the Hayfield and back? They are rocky, less exposed to the weather and wheels are less destructive.

It’ll be boggy and awful. Riding will make it worse. Best leave until summer.

“If you have to be ‘experienced’ in the first place to get on the course, then surely you have already overcome any sexism in the industry?”

You know disadvantage isn’t like a wall that once you’ve climbed you’re free from it? Even the most successful people still need help and still face problems because of their background/circumstances. Most successful people from disadvantaged backgrounds remain the exception.

The accepted methods to reduce inequality is to identify the problems that stop people achieving things and deal with them. In the bike industry this might not be just about women, it could also be things like giving maths lessons to staff who aren’t academic or developing clothing ranges that allow you to ride wearing full body cover or taking the Athena Swann approach to employment e.g. promoting family friendly working hours. Fundamentally you’ll find these things benefit the whole company because you have better staff retention, satisfaction etc.

Seriously, if you think the bike industry is inclusive, pick up a copy of MBR and find me someone who isn’t a white male.

The lowest standover on the market is the kona process 134. The trek lush used to be the lowest, but they’ve stopped doing that this year. However you could get a last year model if you can find one. Then I think the yeti beti has quite low standover.

Good thing is, with larger bikes the standover is lower and you have more room between the saddle and the stem to move about on.

Secret is to move the big stuff and leave everything that is ride able there. Then the grumpiest think they’ve won and don’t do any more but it makes no difference to you. The sorts of things they think cause problems are sometimes laughable.

Have you spoken to the Ramblers? Those guys have the benefit of having a host of pensioners with nothing better to do than to assert their rights. They say you could remove the obstruction:
provided that you are a bona fide traveller on the path and have not gone out for the specific purpose of moving the obstruction, and that you remove only as much as is necessary to get through. If you can easily go round the obstruction without causing any damage, then you should do so. But report the obstruction to the highway authority and to us.

    They also say this:
Send full details to the highway authority (see Q7), and to us
Ask the farmer or landowner concerned to clear the obstruction
Take part in our footpath clearance working parties
If the problems persist, write to your local councillors about them
Send letters to local newspapers seeking support for any representations you may be making
If the authority fails to take action, consider complaining to the local government ombudsman for England, Wales or Scotland

    Rambers advice

Sorry you might know all this already. I’d go to the ombudsman if the council are doing nothing.

    Update us on your progress.

Best not ride the footpaths around Stanage and Houndkirk moor (or at the least not share them on the internet). There’s lots of good will at the moment and with the proposals to extend the bridleway network in the area it would be good to not ruin things for everyone else.

The plusnet one will be about the same but at least if you get one it’ll be configured when you first set up and if something goes wrong plusnet will support it. If it sucks (they are apparently “ok”), then buy a better one. Check you netgear one isn’t locked to talktalk.

Initially i think they were working to the premise that it was a highway. We are encouraging them to consider it a bridleway. Much nicer and more sustainable.

Keith, I’m writing to DCC today. If you have any more questions let me know. I will include your comments about surface material. I was going to clarify what gritstone they will use. How should I word it to ensure we get a detailed response about which type is it?

You are entitled to access your notes, I’d ask for all of them but will charge a fee. This is for NHS but i don’t see it being different for private. £50 appears the going rate for paper copies. They should have a detailed record of all consultations, particularly given this must be a medicolegal mine field. What they will mean is they’ve kept a record in notes, but how detailed depends on the person taking the notes.
    http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/2635.aspx?CategoryID=68&SubCategoryID=160

Dry eye is a recognised complication, it should be stated on the consent form. If you believe she’s undergone an incorrect procedure then you’ll need to consult someone who is an expert willing to state this. They might not do a “Test” for dry eye, it’s often part of an eye history, which should be stated in the notes (e.g. symptoms of dry, gritty eye, allergies etc.). I’m not an expert though, but I’m pretty sure there must be standard operating procedures for laser eye surgery out there on the internet, there’s guidelines for everything else these days.

If you want this to consume your life there’s a website. Fundamentally you’ll need to decide what your goals are, as litigation is a miserable affair and often exacerbates symptoms due to the stress.
    http://opticalexpressruinedmylife.co.uk

If it’s the cost of eye drops: if they are NHS get a prescription prepayment card for £120ish per year although things like lacrilube are likely to be cheaper on the internet.

    Hey Keith,

That looks good. Did they offer any responses to your specific questions? Did they make claims that the work would be to the spec detailed in this book? That’s a lot to live up to.

True, in fact, once you start looking at it even deeper from an access point of view… (as they used disability access as an argument so I went up there with the local disability access group)
    1) There is no car free way to access the track
    2) There is no view when you are in the track (this is important if you are doing a short but slow ramble as if it takes an hour to get to the top you want to be looking at a nice view, not rutted bedrock)
    3) There is no possibility of a circular route
    4) The top sections are too cambered to take a four wheeler
    5) Chapel Gate is way too steep and lose and rocky for a safe descent
    6) The group could use the money that DCC will spend far more effectively.

So the drains, which is now their claimed main reason for doing the works…

Unlike Chapel Gate and Stanage the whole of Rushup is sunk in a ditch on both sides. Stanage Causeway drains off onto one side where the hill drops down. They’ll have to dig a massive long drainage ditch to channel the water somewhere. Where will that be? I would presume (as Keith says) they should have gone and planned where this would be and checked with the landowner to ensure that they are happy with the run off onto their field, and either narrow the track to allow a parallel drain or dig a massive ditch.

All the ditches on Chapel Gate are full of rocks, there are no plans to fund any maintenance on any of these drains.

    It’s all bollocks.

The modern (volunteer) equivalent of IMBA is Peak District MTB and although not in the Peak District National Park it is of interest to us.

    We will look into it.

How did you become aware of it?

If you see anymore like this do drop us a line at Peak District MTB[/url] as if it weren’t for my afternoon work avoidance I’d have missed this post.

    I’d go to decathalon.
I commute on a small basic MTB which cost £119 from there. When it breaks (which is surprisingly after about 2 years of daily use living outside) i just buy a new one. I looked at the bike to work ridgeback which was 3x the price for similar components. They do better bikes too but i’ve been pleased with this one.

Premium bonds is a max £50 000. The interest is terrible, because whilst they report the average, that it heavily skewed by the top prizes. However it’s always guaranteed by the government is instant access.

In this case the advice usually is don’t think about interest, you want cash quickly so the bank is keeping it safe. The last thing you’d want is your house sale falling through because you have to wait for the (now £75k) bailout when the bank goes bust.

I believe there is also some deal about increased protection on house sale money should the bank go bust more than 75k. Not going to relevant to your premium bonds but might be relevant to the rest of the cash. Worth checking up.

We live in Rivelin. I’d like to move but the area is just too convenient. Much easier to get into Sheffield as tram stop right there on your doorstep. Riding to stanage is now virtually all off road on fantastic trails. Local shops (including supermarket) offer all you need. May depend on the commuting times each way. The downside is that it’s not a village, and doesn’t feel like one. It’s noisy at night too. If you move out towards Loxley it might feel a bit more village like and you can get a house with a nice view but it’s a small place so house choices are harder and it’s not really a village. Stannington is quite a mixed area. There’s a bus that links in with the tram though.

Oughtibridge has a nice cycle path through the woods for the summer months to get to hillsborough although after that it’s not that nice. You could go to deepcar in the other direction on the TPT. I’d probably cycle on the pavement if i went on the road. The villages up near Midhope look lovely but a bit remote.

If you are interested in schools, the secondary school at Oughtibridge is good. The one at Stannington not so good. Loxley and Bradfield have good schools as, i think does oughtibridge.

To get from Oughtibridge to town will involve a bus then a tram connection at Middlewood. I suspect it would take 40 mins ish. The tram is great. Lots of nice walks and rides on your doorstep in Oughtibridge. There’s grenoside as well but the transport links to town may not be so good. That feels to me most like a village in sheffield.

Grants: social services first. Usually a charity would expect you to have explored all statutory agencies first as they do not want to pay for things that the government would be paying for. I know the MND Association offer grants for this sort of thing but the disease is so rare that this is viable, i doubt stroke would do the same but worth asking the stroke association, or ask their local branch whether people got grants.

Not what you asked about but…
I’d definitely recommend you get a closimat toilet. They wash and dry your bum and have a heated seat, like the Japanese have. And they look swish and not out of place is a nice bathroom.

The other advice is to watch DIY SOS and other similar programmes when they redo houses for disabled people. Gives you a good idea what you can do.

Does she have a community occupational therapist/social worker? If so they may be able to advise. Their advice will certainly be useful when considering modifications. Age UK may be helpful to advise before you visit a solicitor. I think that you have savings you are expected to pay for modifications but there is some support from the council but it’s means tested. So I assume they are expecting you to get to the £23K threshold.

The standard of council funded care is much lower than private so I’d keep some in reserve!

I got worldwide insurance from them for a car… I hope… (quickly goes and checks). What’s the definition of a van? Maybe call their broker?

    evh22

Have you tried Moneymaxim ? They give reasonable comparison quotes for annual insurance that covers CDW, but also covers full insurance and 3rd party. If you hire a car in Canada they may not include these as standard as the locals are covered by some government scheme. They might cover vans too? Get an annual policy if you are going longer than a few days.

A friend of mine failed her NQT (i think) due to working in a bad school. She moved schools and is a fantastic teacher, and is highly regarded. Happy to ask her advice if you think it would help: could send privately.

I also understand that a high % of teachers don’t make it beyond NQT, likely for the reasons you describe so she isn’t alone and they must go on to have great careers away from teaching. For her future career, after all this has gone away I’d suggest seeking advice from some of them to ensure she has answers to explain what happened at interview.

Are you suggesting that either a senior nurse or, even worse, infection control nurse wears their uniform out of the hospital? Unless they are on trust business this isn’t allowed.

    Southamptom uniform policy

The hospital has a responsibility, perhaps not legally but morally to the local community. Staff who park in local area have a significant negative impact on the community and the hospital should take steps to avoid this. So it seems reasonable to get in touch with the hospital. I’d go to HR.

Many of my patients use special cars to get around and may not be able to use a taxi. It’s also why parking on the pavement is so antisocial as they need space to get through.

Even if you can’t make the dig days you can help out by sticking to riding the rocky line and avoiding the eroded peak. We’ve dug a lot of drains up there too and if you are passing, please take a second to stop and clear them to keep them flowing.

I don’t think this is something that goes away with more running (i have many running mates who have been caught out in all sorts of places). There’s lots of advice from runners on the internet but a few things: low residue food before hand (e.g. white bread not brown, fibre is bad), no energy gels, plan route with toilets and try loperamide (can get it from supermarket). Now loperamide is a bit like that bit in Alice in Wonderland with cakes where a quick nibble might make you hugely bigger or hugely smaller. One tablet might sort you out completely for a month, but some people need 3 or 4 or more to make it through a long race. You have to ahum.. suck it and see.

samunkim thanks for the link. I tried to watch that video (i’m interesting in quality improvement: yes i’m not only a geek but a goody-two-shoes), but do they ever get to the point? I skimmed the report and it seems he spent 2 years telling us there is great variation in hospitals (but why?), and we should be more efficient (clearly). If, like in this video he spent half his time sharing anecdotes with people like Roy Lilley then that explains why the report just tells us what we already knew.

We did the opposite route out to Mosedale cottage from Gatesgarth. It was a miserable slog in the dry. It must be true misery in the wet. Find your way over the old corpse road and climb up nan bield instead. Or just don’t bother. All alternatives are preferable. However the area is lovely and quiet and really pretty. We saw a whole herd of deer and no people.

If you drop us a line I’m thinking of setting up an email group and we’ll send you out the dates when we set them. I suspect James will be up there quite a lot this summer.

When its wet it makes a great difference if on your ride you clear out any drains and keep the water running. If everyone did that it would make a huge difference. Lots of drains now on Derwent edge, the road up from Hope to Hope cross, and a few around the bridge at the bottom on the Beast.
