If it was him on the SPD thread, it was a lame attempt at humour (April 1st related?), rather unfunny and offensive.

AVCHD is CPU heavy, fast discs and RAM won’t make much difference.

Transcode it to a non-compressed format and it will edit OK.

Edius is ideal for this and its not a system heavy application.

Edius 6 will let you edit in a proxy mode with reduced quality monitoring for slower systems.

Is this native AVCHD you are using?

Download the 30 day trial of Edius, it copes with more native video formats than any other NLE.
If your PC is still not performing then transcode into CanopusHQ, there is no quality loss and its much easier on the CPU.

I use a i2600K CPU overclocked, 6Gb RAM, Quadro 1Gb video card, SSD system drive and a 2Tb RAID0 array for video files. OS is Win7 64.

“I was amazed because I was expecting to pay £3,000, £4,000, but not that high”.

He was prepared to pay more than the cost of his Corsa for 12 mths insurance.

    Bonkers.

Had Dyson, it was very noisy, unreliable, dirty and heavy.

At our local recycling/dump Dyson’s far outnumber the other makes of vacuum cleaner.

The forum dedicated to your NLE software of choice would be a good place to start for advice and tips. There is bound to be an iMovie one out there.

I think JO’s heart is in the right place but not so sure about using “celebrities” to teach the kids. Just because you appear on TV and are an expert on your subject does not mean you can teach.
In my experience you need to have a good teacher for more than just a couple of lessons. The best teachers I had, and ones I respected the most, were those that acknowledged you as they walked around the school, not just in lessons, the ones that seemed to actually care.

Used to drink with a fella whose tactic was to arrive at the pub before everyone else so he was sitting there with his pint almost finished. When everyone else arrived he was included in the round, he’d then let everyone else get one in until it was time for him to pony up, then he would announce that “I have to go a bit early tonight lads” and leave.

It took us a while to realise what he was doing. When we did, we just sat there after the first round with empty glasses. He got the point and bought a round, but got a half in for himself. Next round he asked for a pint!
He was probably the highest paid amongst us at the time as well.

Get something light and compact, we had a MClaren, folded up easily and could be chucked in the car. Cheap too.
As soon as the little one could walk properly we encouraged her to do so, a small light buggy was very handy then.
We knew couples who bought estate cars in order to fit in huge buggies and all the baby stuff, bonkers.

When I did my daughters Corsa recently it was cheaper to buy a kit with cam belt, tensioner, pulleys and water pump than buy the parts separately; and the kit was only a few quid more than the belt and tensioner parts on their own.
Friend of mine changed just the belt on his Ford Cougar, the tensioner failed, wrote off the engine.
False economy to not change the whole lot IMO.

It must be a local thing.
My daughter attended a C of E grant maintained Primary and there was no requirement to be baptised/attend church, she then went to a C of E secondary, again no requirement for any religious stuff and the Arch Bishop of York is governor in that one.

On the other hand a mate of mine and his wife once attended church regularly and he even played drums in the church band so he could get his kids into the local C of E school. As soon as the kids were in he left the band due to “musical differences” and curtailed all god Bothering activities shortly afterwards.

If the warranty doesn’t cover non moving parts what is left for it to cover

Quite, I failed to fully engage brain whilst typing and didn’t read what I’d typed back carefully.
Meant to say no moving parts in heater matrix so dealer can’t really argue Wear & tear, but dealer can argue these things happen in high mileage cars, and that it was priced accordingly. IMO its a faulty component and should be replaced if the warranty terms allow.
Offering a warranty is a risk on his part, he hopes nothing goes wrong during this period; buying high mileage vehicle a risk on the OP’s part.
    Like I said good luck.

it’s taxed and tested ’till June

£350 is not a lot for nearly 7ths motoring.
Good service record or not, a car of that mileage is a risk.
However any fault that requires a mechanic on an Omega is pretty much doing to write it off, don’t be too fussy about it and run it until it dies.

Always liked the Omega, mate had one, comfy and handled well, and like all Vauxhall’s was far faster than it was meant to be.

He says the warranty covers everything apart from wear and tear

A very generous warranty on a high mileage vehicle, and the £650 drop in price is a hefty discount on a cheap car too. Sounds to me as if he was desperate to shift it.

You’re going to have a tough job winning this one, no moving parts in a heater matrix so no real “wear & tear” and as its a high mileage car it can be argued that these things are to be expected.

    Good luck

Pretty high mileage but he did offer a warranty knowing that…….

What does the warranty say it covers?
Most dealers will only warranty the usual items like engine, gearbox, clutch etc on high mileage second hand cars, and then only for a limited period.

I think Olympus do do a range of cheap lenses. How cheap do you want? Olympus lenses are among the best budget items around, so I’ve read. At least in full-size 4/3 format.

True, the kit lenses are well thought of as some of the better kit lenses, the rest of the Zuiko Digital range is superb but quite expensive 8mm – £550, 11-22mm – £650, 12-60mm – £700

most MIL cameras use significantly smaller sensors

Not strictly true, unless you only use expensive “Full Frame” DSLR’s, the PEN uses the same sensor as the Olympus E5 DSLR the Sony NX uses APS-C, another popular DSLR sensor size. Both of these sensors are significantly bigger than fixed lens compacts.
DSLR are better for action photos, if you are serious about sports/action get one of these, for pretty much everything else, without the added complication of changing lenses, a decent compact with a good zoom range will be fine.

I’ve an LG Blu-Ray player, matches the LG telly.
Fast to load, picture quality is very good IMO and the up-scaling of SD DVD works well too.
Will also connect to YOUTUBE, if that kind of thing floats your boat.

Oly E-PL1 is a very good camera.
PL1 has the iAuto mode which basically turns it into a Point and Shoot, which may be handy on a Family camera.
720p video is very good too.
Full manual overide for when you want to fiddle.
Adaptors available to fit pretty much any old manual lenses you may have for yet more fiddling.
Main disadvantage is that Olympus (or anyone else) don’t do a range of cheap lenses.
The twin lens kit (inc a 4/3 adaptor) is good value.

IS it illegal to have an engine running with no-one in the car on private property?….

I would think not, otherwise how would mechanics be able to work on a car?

Olympus is really good and ranges from cheap and excellent vfm to excellent and priced to match

Agreed, the 11-22 is really nice and the 8mm looks very interesting too.

The lens range is the 4/3 system strong point.

I use my e-p1 almost as much as my dslr.

I use my PEN so much I’ve passed on the DSLR to my daughter. Superb little camera, and with the adaptor it will take the 4/3 mount glass.

    Everywhen

They use a new lens standard so old cheap auto-focus lenses simply aren’t available.

The Zuiko glass for the 4-3/PEN range is really very good, and IMO you should always use the best lenses you can, a fancy body with an cheap lens is just a waste of time.
And adaptors for the Micro 4-3 are available to use lots of different old manual lenses.
If you want to photograph action get a DSLR though. Tools for the job etc.

    6GB RAID 0?

    Ahem, typo 6Gb/s

Vegas and Premiere are Ok, although if you are going to be using AVCHD download the demo of Edius, it handles native AVCHD files faster than either of the others.

I’d go for a couple of 6Gb SATA RAID 0 as the video drive.

I paid £300 for a 1.4 Corsa Breeze for my daughter to learn to drive in. I didn’t expect much but its turned out to be one of the best cars I’ve ever owned. No rattles, only a little cosmetic rust, straight through its MOT, 100K miles, it uses no oil and starts first turn even in
-10degrees after being left for a week.
I get the oil changed at National Tyres, and a mechanic mate of mine did the cambelt and water pump when we bought it, for £170.
Granted its not very fast and has a tendency to turn pink (Vauxhall red paint) the moment the Sun comes out.

Snowdonia National Park Ranger told me and a couple of mates, after we’d come down after a night s wild camping, that it was illegal to do it in England and Wales but not Scotland.
However he then said provided you don’t use a bright Red or Orange tent, camp late, strike camp early, and don’t leave a mess he’s not going to stop anyone. He then invited us to this office to look at his map and show us his favourite places to camp for the next time we were in the area.

I’d be interested to hear the real reasons why they’ve changed their views.

10 Downing Street meeting room last week.
    Knock on Door.
    David Cameron (DC): Come in
Door opens in walks (insert Lib Dem MP): Good afternoon Mr Cameron Sir
    DC: Afternoon
Lib Dem MP(LDMP): Good afternoon Mr Clegg Sir
Nick Clegg(NC) Good afternoon, thank you for coming. You know why we asked to see you?
LDMP: I presume it’s about the Fees Vote? You know I’m going honour the election pledge and vote against it.
DC: No, no, no, not at all, of course we both respect your principles and you can vote as you choose.
    LDMP: Excuse me?
NC: Like Dave says it’s not about the vote. We like you.
    LDMP: You like me?
DC: Yes, we like you and think you could have a bright political future…
NC: Yes.Don’t you think it would be a waste if you spent years as a Back Bencher?
DC: ..dealing with constituency pensioners, NHS complaints, although I’ve..er we have some ideas about that…
LDMP: but I like serving my constituency, helping people…
NC: …the Conservative gov, err.. Coalition Government will need bright young things like you to chair committees, and panels….
DC: Why don’t you sit down, take the weight off your feet, use that seat by the cabinet over there…..
    LDMP: I’m sorry, what cabinet? Oh I see….. !
    NC: I thought you would…
DC: Why not come and see us again when we’re not so busy..
NC: …after the fees vote perhaps?
DC: That will be all…for now.
LDMP exits and closes door. Takes out mobile phone and dials.
Voice on telephone: Hello Mrs Lib Dem MP..
LDMP: Hi , listen dear, you know that house you fancied…
Mrs LDMP: Yes, the one you said we couldn’t afford on your MP’s salary..?
LDMP: Yes, well that might change……
    Back in the meeting Room
DC: Well Nick, I think he got the picture..
NC: yes Dave, only another 20 to go…
DC: ….and 20 more promises to break..
    NC:… I’m used to that!
    DC&NC: Ha, ha, ha…..

Similar thing happened to me in my early days of using eBay.
I won an auction for the starting price of £1 on a pair of brake levers.
    I paid with Paypal immediately.
I received an email a couple of days later from the seller saying he wanted £6 and could I send the extra via Paypal. I said no, eBay auction etc.
He refused to send the levers or refund my £1+ whatever he’d asked for poatage, then left negative feedback (the only negative I’ve ever had).
I judged from the way his rather abusive emails were written he was probably 12yrs old.
I reported him to eBay but they were useless.
    Basically they have the item.
I know it was only £1 but its the principle.
