Not for me.  You must be logged in using Google, Apple or something else.

Odd – I get this. Not sure if it’s because I’m on a computer not my phone or something.

Comet over Bennachie tonight.. another treat in the night sky. It’s pretty faint but visible with the naked eye.

Phone camera picks it out nicely.

i refuse to beluieve that thing is more fuel economical than a passenger jet. isnt methane the worst greenhouse gas? i had pressumed it would be burning something like hydrogen.

Methane is worse than CO2 (but far from the strongest greenhouse gas) but they will be aiming to burn it rather than release it unburned into the atmosphere. In which case you end up with CO2 and water.

(Water accounts for about 50% of the greenhouse effect – but its cycle is not really comparable to CO2, Methane etc).

It was stunning in Aberdeenshire. I’ve seen hints of green before (and had some great phone pictures) but last night was something else. It was almost too bright for the phone camera to pick up the colours.

Almost like sunset at some points but with alien colours.

First time (in the 16 years we’ve lived out here in the sticks) that it’s been that bright – or that it’s been that bright and combined with no moon and clear skies.

It was variable though. 9pm it was just a few green streaks (still cool) – pic is an hour later.

Says Sheffield gets 43.7mm rain a year. I’m not doubting the quality of their research or anything, but the Met Office reckon it’s over 800mm.

    Still, it’s working. We’re talking about them…

Tweed valley? Uplift at Innerleithen then plenty to keep you amused at Golfie, Glentress (or the rest of the valley).

Day trip to Ballater and Aboyne is doable if you fancy it. Bit of a drive but manageable with some planning.

@euain, where were you parked when that happened? Hope I said hello to you at the start of 4, how did you get on over the weekend? (Apart from the car incident)

No, I was in the drivers seat – it appears my instincts worked OK and diving for the passenger footwell was the right call. Driving home from work and the tractor just nosed out of the hedgerow to join the road. It doesn’t really bear thinking about as my driver’s headrest is bent back. ?

I didn’t make it down in the end. Complete Tweedlove failure for me this year. Broke collar bone at the end of April so missed Laggan. Not healed fully so marshalled Glentress one. Then all set for a (slow) return at Innerleithen and this happened.

Riding the last ever Tweedlove enduro in Innerleithen was scuppered with car troubles. (Tractor incident – that’s why you’re meant to raise those loader arms! No-one injured)

    Cover it with a sticker?

My bag says to leave them on and has some padding/protection for them (Evoc pro). However, summer trip to Morzine 2 years ago, disc was pretty mangled when we got there and had to borrow a spare.

I take them off now. Or do on the way out, risk it way back if I’m being lazy.

I can get 2 evoc bags in my Octavia standing up with only 2/3 of the split back seat down. Meant I could take 2 passengers and a good bit of boot space left for the bags. If you’re not needing a back seat passenger, you should be good in an Octavia-sized estate.

Go mini-Weeksy! Enjoy and keep it rubber side down.

Hopefully we’ll see you out in Morzine next week.

RIAT for me.. driving down tomorrow with the lad and 3 of his mates. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday and camping right next to the show.  I’m quite looking forward to it.

Last airshow I made was Leuchars so it’s been a few years.

Drive will be brutal though – 5 in the car and Google says 9h drive! Glad I got the air conditioning recharged. Not needed it in the last 5 years but looks warm down south!

Depends what riding you’re doing but that sounds very small for a larger rider if you’re looking to stop on anything at all steep.

No reason not to go for the 4 pots but you’ll always have limited stopping power with the smaller rotors.

As for adapters – I’ve gone to E4s on my Mega and just used the Shimano adapters that were there to start with. No problems experienced.

It sounds like you’re on the same bike (given the fork model).

I’ve said a number of times on a number of threads, I work in electronic payments and I wouldn’t touch Revolut with an extra-long fraud resistant bargepole.

Why’s that? I’ve used Revolut happily for years and recommend it to anyone else looking to spend money abroad. I wasn’t aware of any concerns and my gut feeling was I’d trust it over PayPal. What am I missing?

I did a PADI course about 20 years ago. The swimming pool in Hampshire and the open water stuff in Egypt. It was great fun. A couple of dives in/around UK were great. Then kids and life happened and not been out since.

I was vaguely thinking it would be fun to pick up again but then a bike crash a few months ago (and the resulting broken ribs and a pneumothorax)  seems to have permanently ended my diving career.

I’ve got one. A Ventura whatever it is that folds out (Ventura tents). Definitely at the low end of prices for roof tents but no complaints about it.

It’s great for what I need it for. We use it mainly for race weekends (SDA, BDS) where we’re camping in a car park. Think Glenshee, Fort William, Innerleithen,… A van would be the right answer but lacking the 10s of thousands of pounds for a van just now, the roof tent does very well.

It stays in the garage most of the time – just put on for trips out. Takes about 10 minutes to fit but need the help of one of the kids to put it on top of the Octavia. Very quick to pitch (unfold then 2 guy lines to secure).

It’s proven waterproof and holds up fine in the wind (3 days in stormy Torridon was a good test), comfortable (well, it’s OK but might look to put a thicker mattress in it or extra padding under it) and easy to use. Gets me, the lad and the dog in no problem (6′, 6’3 and a 23kg Vizsla).

Normal camping, we go back to the ground tent. Largely because I’ve got about 6 or 7 of them and can choose the size I want for the trip.

14 th or 15th… I’d be very up for that with my 4 accomplices if you need more takers for a bus load

    @thegeneralist
sounds like it may evolve into a plan. Some ducks to line up – girlfriend will be riding a couple of days and probably not that keen to travel over but I’ll work something out and shout to see if it works.

    @weeksy
hopefully catch up over the week. If I’ve read the map right, we’re not far from the Super Morzine lift in town so should be able to get anywhere really.

I’ve just got to get on with my physio so I can get enough mobility in my shoulder to enjoy the riding.

We’ll be there 11th-18th August (cycling 12-17th) and planning to do the trip down to Samoens on one of the days. Hoping to get the bike shop trailer/bus back up. All to be arranged/researched though. It worked last year and was great fun.

Probably not aiming for first couple of days of the holiday but we’d be on for that sometime 14th-17th.

Edit – as there were more replies before mine. Referring to @ Kryton57

Moving The discussion slightly, I’m disturbed by the frequent use of the word “Nazi” to describe axis and specifically German forces in some current media, I think…

I noticed this – but took it to mean they were trying to highlight a fight against an ideology rather than the nation of Germany. So the necessary fight was against fascism and the Nazis.

The victims in it all were the soldiers on both sides.

In the same, “recommend what you have” way… Vizsla. Physically in the same mould as the German Short-haired pointer mentioned above so happy cycling. Very affectionate and love people.

Lundy is quite small for a Vizsla at about 23kg – but probably fits the medium size you’re looking for. She’ll run miles given the chance but never wants to be too far from you (velcro dogs).

Tweedlove (Tweedlove Festival) has a lot to demo if you fancy a weekend in Peebles. Bit of a hike from London but could be a fun weekend.

I’m not sure exactly what brands are there but normally there’s a good selection.

I’ve got an AM9 v3 frame in Large taking up space in the garage that I’d be happy to let go for a reasonable offer. :).

It did my lad great from ages 11-14 until we got an XL Aeris 9. It’s a bit scratched in the normal places but mechanically in great condition.

I run one at home so I can connect and access iPlayer when I’m abroad. Benefits of fast internet making that a good experience.

Other than that, not felt the need to except where I have to get into my work network. Never heard a really convincing argument why you need it in a cafe etc. if everything is going over SSL/TLS and the certificates are checking out.

Calling it any sort of red was pretty irresponsible; I suppose that the only way you could justify it would be to say that there’s no mandatory drops/air, but you’d be stretching credulity clingfilm-thin.

I’ve heard people say, but it’s a DH Red not an XC Red like the ones in Laggan/Glentress… which always seemed a pretty rubbish argument to me. Definitely a black and calling it anything else is always going to lead to miserable folks walking down it.

I think it’s a great track. Did the enduro on it some years ago – that was a bruising run down 🤣. It’s much harder to ride fast than I thought, even if you’ve cruised down it many times.

I do think the WC course is, if anything, easier. (Or rather, there are route choices on the WC course that make it easier). Took us a few visits to try the WC run (pretty intimidated) and it was easier and more fun than we expected. So, if you’re getting down the Top Chief well enough, go an have a blast on the WC course.

For ours the engineer used same route/trunking the copper used to come in. For the neighbours, they just asked where they wanted the fibre to go into the house and drilled through the wall. So in our experience they’re pretty flexible (where the they is openreach installers).

I don’t think location of fibre has that much to do with where your desktop is. You’ll have a box (ONT?) where the fibre comes in. This can then plug straight into your normal router / wifi / however you distribute your network around the house.

Or am I missing the gist of the question?

The taping really pissed me off especially as I prefer to be up on the hillside watching the actual riding up close, rather than in the finish arena

That’s a pity. This was 2014 – removing stones from shoes and trying not to miss the action!

Frightening to think the lad is racing the course in a couple of weeks!

Watched it on a eurosport stream and there was no commentary although that might have been us?

If it’s the same as last year, you have to select commentary. It defaulted to “ambient” and you have to choose the language you want.

Spoiled here in Aberdeenshire. So normal evening / quick weekend spin is about 15km, 700-800m climbing and typically looks very like a wee enduro course. Probably 1.5-2h on the bike and get in 4 or 5 decent descents. At a guess red-black level if anyone labelled them with roots, rocks, steeps depending where you’re heading.

Brilliant – except I’m 4 weeks into recovering from a broken collar bone and missing it – grumpy and miserable here.

See if it comes up when the top seal is not screwed on (so it’s free to move with the shaft).

I’ve had it before when the bush/seal/whatever in the top cap was a bit stiff. It was enough to stop that last wee bit of extension.

Cleaning/grease/silicone spray and a few months use seemed to loosen it up again.

Seconding screwdriver. Similar problem here a while back – just shoved a screwdriver in and twisted (not even that hard) and they opened. Probably quicker than it would be even if you had the keys if the locks are a bit rusted/weathered.

Definitely worth a try before getting pliers/grinders to them!

Does it matter ?  I always assumed that the platform bit was there in case you missed/lost the binding

I’m pretty sure it’s just there as a rock guard to try to keep the mechanism safe. Pretty useful round here – though the pedals start looking a but tatty after a while.

Maybe my shoes are stiffer but I’ve never really noticed any difference between platform and XC-style pedals in use (other than how quickly the mechanisms get pummelled).

Derry Cairngorm was great when I did it with Carn a Mhaim and MacDui in a loop. The top of Derry is a rockfest and a pain but the singletrack after it down to Glen Derry was mint.

I’ve walked down that single track. I remember it being an absolute ball-ache to walk down on tired legs and wishing I had my bike! Definitely worth a look :)
