While base rate hasn’t changed much recently – I have noticed the lending rate has gone up – I appiled for a mortgage in March fixed 5yr at 4.29% the same application now would be 4.79%

One thing for sure is base rate is only going to increase

    Haha excellent.

I have been a ss’er on a MTB for about 12 years. The I started to commute and picked up a SS CX bike – perfectly fine for a 12 x2 mile commute.

I then decided to do some distance on it (100 miles) on roads…..never again!!!!!

No please no superdry – so 3+ years ago!

Actually for non branded Sainsburys do some great ethical cotton ttshirts for about £6.

Howies are great for branded and if you feel rich try some icebreaker merino ones…

Personally at 35 I have decided I have grown out of anything that has any heavy branding on them and would rather go for soothing well made/ethical.

    Far too much!

Interestingly though, when I was younger on v.low salaries I was spending a shocking % on bike stuff. Now I have have a proper jobs (still no commitments though!) I find I spend a lot less in ££ let alone %.

But I guess that maturing and really understanding what you want and not following fad.

@mrschrispy – it is just a basic rule – maybe I was out of line quoting it. The other advice is better, see an financial adviser.

But as a basic rule, its a good start. Basically now that final salary pensions are gone for many, you need to save bucket loads to get a good return (assuming its your own investment)

But thanks for bringing this topic up, I just increased my % again!

@grahamh what is really interesting about that article is the last part, apple have for the last few years made upgradable laptops, I would even go as far as saying they became easier to upgrade…until the air came along. But the air also saw a huge spike in sales, so the average consumer is clearly more interested in from over upgradability. SO they are providing exactly what the majority want. It could be said the MBP has been a niche product – really designed for portable graphic type work, but it will be interesting to see if the new design and marketing gumph behind the screen increases sales….

And tbh I have had laptops for a very long time (Win 3.11 through to Win7&OSX) and have not upgraded one…and I could be considered technically minded.

I have a RAB love it wouldn’t go back – but it is actually lightweight so maybe not for you

    http://www.ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/rab_event_momentum_jacket.html

I also have a topend bombproof Mountain Hardwear – has lasted me 8 years of hell, including using as a layer over a motorbike leathers and it still perfect….only replaced it with the Rab as it was heavy.

The battery and hard drive in the new mac will be replaceable for a cost. I have heard mixed comments on the replacability of the RAM though….shame. But just max it

Oddly I hate OSX but love the hardware – easily the best built machiens on the market.

    Luckily they run windows :)

Personally I find the build quality of cheap PCs are terrible, I have seen so many cracked cases. So I would not go for one personally. My wife has a 2006 Macbook that has only just been replaced, she used it every day and it has been a great machine (though the battery has just died this year) I think this is a testament to quality. It has just been replaced by the new MBP retina – sweet.

Myself, I have a work HP Elitebook, awesome windows machine but you are talking mac money, but it is the only machine I can honestly say is of Mac quality. My home machine is a Dell XPS15 – which I replaced a macbook pro with, I was a sucker for spec and wanted quad core, nice screen etc (pre quad MBP) and I really wish I just got a macbook, as nice and expensive the Dell is (£900 machine) – its still not got that quality feeling but it is fast.

So personally, I could only suggest getting a mac, the quality is amazing and I think that ensures longevity. And remember they all run windows really quite well (Arguably better then they run OSX – I got geeky once and wrote an article on this and benchmarked a bunch of intensive application on a few separate macs running windows and OSX and windows was ALWAYS faster).

Get a mac and run the OS you like.

Also find out if anyoen in your family can get you educational discount – well worth it esp with 3 year warranty.

We have just ordered my wife (who is a designer) the new pro retina, can not wait to have a tinker with it!

But be careful – I got my S3 on Monday (moved form iPhone) – logged in with my google ID and everything was nice and slick.

Then the Gallery proceeded to download 500mb of content from my Picasa without me realising….I now know there is a setting to stop background data activity..

But I guess on three is not an issue with all out can eat
