A lot of my riding is that sort of stuff.

I use lightweight walking boots with track pattern pedals. The lugs on the boots engage pretty well with the track pedal, and this can always be improved by a bit of judicious carving on the boot sole.

A bonus is that track pedals are much lighter than platforms.

Staple diet in Scotland and look how great the life expectancy is…..

Actually if you look at the life expectancy of the people in Scotland who eat a lot of porridge it’s pretty good…

The real advantage is you become strong, muscular, develop legs you can wear a kilt with, and become incredibly attractive to women.

And you should see what it does for men…

(I love my porridge – any sort)

How about something that would shock the Punks instead of the public?

It’s ok, they stop doing this by the time they hit their teens.

Been through this with 2 children, other 2 were saints. Tried all the tricks. Selective neglect seems to be most effective, although for a period I was an advocate for post-natal abortions.

Buy as many ZImbabwean dollars as you can right now, they’ll soon be worth more than the pound if they do this. :D

Maybe not, but it sounds suspiciously like what happened to the Weimar Republic and Zimbabwe but with a new improved marketing name.

It may be better to convert cash to assets.

Me, I’m shifting my money offshore right now.

I’m biased, but here goes –

Don’t get a working dog unless you can keep it active, ideally with you all day. If you can do that, and train it properly, then they are the very best of dogs.

Personally I prefer hounds. They are quite happy to lie around all day so long as they get a bit of excitement at some point – needn’t be a long run so long as it’s hard. Favourite running dog? Wolfhound or Great Dane, but make sure there’s no hip problems. Produce prodigious amounts of poop, so best for open country unless you like scooping.

If you like an enthusiastic best friend ever dog, there’s nothing like a Staffie.

Avoid dogs that have been bred for “beauty”, brains seem to suffer, with the exception of the big poodles, which are a good dog.

Basically dogs break down into 4 classes, basket dog, ankle dog, knee dog, proper dog :-)

It’s caused by global warming. The recent heatwave must have induced expansion stresses in the differential compression spigot valve which resulted in the catastrophic decompression of the kerfoofle shaft.

Once you’re dead/retired/redundant your workmates/bosses forget you in a week.

Just remember that, and suddenly all those long hours of dedication don’t seem worthwhile. You can’t have a life if you don’t enjoy/live it.

If you like what jonb said, that is the central theme and quoted in the “4-Hour Work Week”

And as for Oz, I can’t think of the downside unless you go there, live in a city and replicate UK urban lifestyle. Maybe I should have said go to Queensland :D

For anyone wondering why they are working, there’s a useful book called “The 4-hour Work Week” by Timothy Ferriss.

Not all of it is gold, some of it is BS, but the central theme is well worth getting your head around. There’s plenty ways to achieve what he is talking about.

BTW for life/work balance it’s hard to beat the masters – get yourself to Oz if you can. :D

That’s not niche – you mean a 69er SS bamboo frame tandem.

It’s all a matter of exposure (and I don’t mean flashing).

I find the Stealth too cold for me. It warms up ok when you’re moving, but you want to be going straight into a heated place afterwards.

It feels like it sucks the heat out of you. Because it is close fitting there’s not enough room under it to layer up. My verdict, ok for road, but not if you are standing on the side of a mountain.

Sorry Stoner, didn’t see your posting – I must have been doing mine at the same time. I wasn’t referring to you.

I was talking generally, but I stand by what I have said, and I do know a little about the subject. (It’s why I don’t have to go to work :) )

There’s no way the OP is going to know if the person answering him has any real knowledge or otherwise. Suggest he reads “The Richest Man in Babylon” as a good start in where to get advice.

    we like arguing.

We are objective enough in our single mindedness to realise there is only one true way, and that gears are wrong, so don’t think we are biased.

Are you wanting to go broke?

Do a course, or read a book (Dummies are a good start), but don’t take advice from people who may not have any experience of the markets.

Singlespeeders are actually kind sensitive types who worship the latest in cycling technology. There is nothing more wonderful in their eyes than the latest derailleur from Shimanolo.

And that is why they are not so crude and unfeeling to drag those carefully crafted masterpieces through mud and dirt, even though it may mean they have to struggle up hills and bear the invective of the uncultured bestial types who do.

    Singlespeeds are $hit?

I’ve got a funny feeling I’ll be agreeing with this in a few days time, especially at 3am on the ‘Puffer course.

As for hills, I haven’t found one I can’t ride down – does that count?

Never worked out how wearing your granny’s gear helped on steep hills. Tried it once and the bloomers got caught in the chainring. I’ll be watching for you perverts, next time I’m out.

And as for hard, well my woman doesn’t complain.

What I love seeing is people zipping by in their multi-tonne 4×4 behemoths, superior in their better traction, then rediscovering a few of Newton’s laws of physics when they come to a sharp bend under brakes. (So long as they’re not hurt, that is).

There’s a road sign near me that gets clobbered that way every winter.

If there was an occupying force in this country, I would be not be reasonable, peaceable, or willing to sit down to negotiate.

Thus I cannot expect the Palestinians to behave differently. This will not and should stop until they get their country back.

psling – Whose land is it? Not who is the oppressed and who is the oppresser but whose land is it really?

er, I think that’s actually easy to prove. Just get a 20th century atlas published before the Palestinians made (or had made for them) the mistake of allowing unrestricted immigration.
