  • Bespoked Bike Check: Two Bikes To Make Tarmac Tempting

have a look on the sheldon gear calc.
then get ta(or any other) rings to fit your cadence, terrain, ecc.

33-46 with a 14-25 on my road bike. use 46-16 mostly.so the chainline is nice and straight.plus a bigger cog on the back lasts longer and feels smoother.
spin up just about anything.(got some real mountains here)-means I feel fresher for longer.
plus a straight block cassette means you always have the right gear.
    + only a 13t drop,the same as 52-39.
+ with smaller chainrings the gaps in gearing are smaller.

24-40-42 on the road touring bike.12-27 cassette.
half step evens out the 2t jumps in the cassette.so its a straight block 12-27.handy for faux plats, wind.esp when you’re not really pushing hard.
+ a road crank is quite a bit narrower than a mtb one,for me it’s more comfortable.

24 is nice to have when traction is a problem.ie dirt roads going up.
maybe should have fitted a 26,but never really use it much.

    44-16 on the ss,for commuting.

cadence of about 100,so speed is not a problem.
knees feel much better.I feel less tired and am faster since going to all this trouble.

    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/

see what works for you.standard gearing is much too high.
if you’ve got a compact, bmx rings can be found quite cheap,to try out.

it was in denmark, the highest ‘col’ is 300m.
I saw the course on youtube, courtesy of the norwegian cycling fed.
(only ‘cos I’m thinking of moving to cph,but the riding looks shite-both road and mtb)

the problem is probably clearance, more than power.not much room between pads and rim, that’s usually a bigger problem than power.
wind the brakes open as far as they’ll go,without opening the qr,then you’ll see how wide you can go with rims.
I’ve done it,and it’s not too bad.but it was pretty dry.
most short reach brakes won’t accept a tyre wider than 32-35mm anyway.
you could try longer drop calipers and 650b,or very long reach calipers and 26″ wheels, but your frame probl won’t take the tyres.
plus you’ll want mudguards if you’re touring.so that reduces clearance as well.plus your road bike gearing probl a big high.I used a 1×9 with 39 on front and 34 out back and it was still too high a gear off road.esp with 28mm tyres.

depends on a lot of things.how much luggage you’ve got, state of the roads.28mm 700c is fine for tarmac.wider tyres are nice.
v brakes are about 14eu from bike24.a surly fork is 50eu from the same place.a cheap mtb frame is about 50eu from crc.you can get those seatclamps with a rack mount,or use a saddlebag, like the carradice ones.

actually, the les woodland article is slightly different.he ran out of money in aug/sept,then had to take a job,so he commuted there, worked 8hs,then set off to log some more miles.

both shimano and sidi do wider road models.
I find the normal shimano a bit wider than the normal sidis.
keep an eye on crc, they usually have quite good deals on shimano road shoes.

what about a thorn?more trekking/green lane than mtb though.

if you want cheap, look no further than stw’s tandem of doom.

I feel so vulnerable,on my road bike.

I think it shouldn’t be edited down.the crash scene is hard hitting, but not that much. The crash scene in death proof, for example,is much harder.besides,we’ve seen so many crashes.

its the emergency services, just doing their job, like they do every day & the driver’s realisation of the event, cause and effects.
    that hits hard.for me anyway.

If a person’s livelyhood is based on organizing people’s holidays, surely it’s not too much to ask they be competent at doing so.

lived in the uk,italy and now spain.
sick of all of them, miss all of them, when I change.

    just can’t win I suppose.

Don simon,I’d wanted to ask you about leaving spain, guess I don’t have to now.

Read voltaire’s candide, last night.put it all into a bit of perspective.

re: cycling in natural parks in spain.
Living in bcn I should abide by this.
    http://www.uncomo.com/articulo/normativa-ciclista-del-parque-de-collserola-barcelona-961.html
basically says you can’t cycle on anything narrower than 3m.

and you can’t do more than 20kmh

dunno if its the same everywhere in spain.
never taken any notice of that myself.

    got all three.
hummvees are for winter, singletracks for about now.hummvee lites have been used all summer.seem pretty sturdy.
lites are really light and airy.def get them if the singletracks are a bit warm.

why not wear stuff with more pockets?
    barbour,belstaff,or a domke photographers’ jacket.
or a lunchbox.seen some mx ones, probably do mtb ones too.
    or carry a briefcase.
or get a brompton and get a front bag.that way you get to buy a new bike.

    kaiser,
I wanted to lower the bars without buying a new stem.
the 4″ 640mm bars would have prob been better, but its difficult to go back to narrower bars after having tried wide ones.might cut the 720s to something sensible.like 710.
    besides,
how would you get the bmx bars into the brommie stem?its wraparound.not removable faceplate.you’d need to cut something.then weld it.

plus its heavy enough as it is,those bars are pretty heavy, the ns ones are about 300g.
best thing about wider bars is putting the brake levers inboard,so you get more leverage and one finger braking.

rode it into work today.its great, but small wheels feel so draggy.100psi.so its not that.might try kojaks.

5’11” on a standard seatpost.you can reverse the clamp and bring it right up,you gain about 8cm that way.
does anyone know where I can find the mks lambda/gripking pedals with the ezy detachable mechanism?uk/eu sources pref.
    had 2 dahons.only worth it if they’re cheap.but then they’re cheap.
a brompton is a nice bike to have.

    oh lonesome me was lovely..
some stuff there is unbearable though..I’m looking at you red, white and blue.amongst others.
    Uncle tupelo,son volt,some wilco,cowboy junkies,natalie merchant.
though some of that stuff is more folk,or bluegrass than country.
north mississippi allstars is good, not strictly country though.
    lots of stuff on youtube.
    and iris dement is good.
just my opinion like, though that red white and blue merits a ban for several generations.

sorry about your mate,I sometimes think about what will happen to my 7 bikes if I die.
    I mean when I die.
I thought about the people I know, and I can’t imagine anyone wanting/needing/deserving or even using them.
shame really.we put so much effort into this, economic, time, physical.
a bit like life I suppose.

    they’re great,and crap.

I’ve changed pedals, bars, cranks and now it feels much better.

don’t be afraid to change bars, stems, etc.
for example, there’s 3 different stems.so you really can dial in your position mixing them with different rise bars.
    & width.stock are 52 if I remember right.

bought some 25.4 drops to try out when cables need changing.
however 38mm drops on such a flexy bike with tiny wheels will probably be ‘entertaining’, especially in the wet.

    Bill,
the rear spacing is 115 I think,so you’d have to spread the rear triangle for an alfine hub.
advantage of the alfine is that having a disc mount, with some superglue and a spoon and you could have a disc brake on the back..

I used the alfine crankset,it was on offer at crc,and already had a bashguard, and the right size chainring.
the brompton shop told me I’d need a special bb,with spacers to get a good chainline, that’s what they do on the ones they fit.
the chainline seems only 1mm off so it’s not a problem.

the highest bars with a 25.4 clamp were the ns chemical bars with 3″ rise.
the m bars are 6″ rise so its a bit lower than the s-bar version now.there’s some electra bars with 4″ rise but were double the price.

the fold is fine.as they’re lower, they end up farther up when folded.so its the same size folded.

bars and cranks make it feel much stiffer and stable.
    really do recommend it.

best thing for the brakes I found was to use v brake pads, instead of road ones.that helped a lot,as did shimano flat bar levers and fitting noodles to improve the routing.
and those mks ezy pedals.stock are crap.

    hope this helps.

I’ll post a pic later if possible.

if aesthetics didn’t matter so much why are you going on about the paintjob of this vs the others you’ve got?

    too many stem spacers.
thomson posts on the road are so uncomfortable.
I’d rather have a stiffer rear triangle and a flexy post than the opposite.they don’t always look wrong though.layback ones don’t look very nice (got 4 thomsons,2 normal,2 layback)

A black(or white) seatpost clamp would look better.

having said all that,I like your floor.

when it’s locked you open it by pressing a catch.
You can open it by lifting it up and swinging the back wheel up,so it locks.
it’s only locked open, not shut.its the seatpost that locks it shut.

    complicated things, bromptons..

can’t do 2:55 with wide bars though.

    this one’s more touchy feely..
Upgraded the cranks to alfine and the handlebars to some 720mm ones, stock ones always felt like they were about to bend..feels mental now.brakes are still crap.but I’ve caned it so hard..plus it feels pretty good loaded.really loaded.and the gf sitting on the toptube.and going down a biggish hill..need to make a cushion/seat for her.but she’s not too keen on trying again.
