    My personal experience…

Good points.. Keeps your brain active.. meet new people.. builds self respect.. pretty cheap.. I was the only man on most courses..

Bad points.. People who at the same time as me were at uni full time would often comment that my workload for the OU was far more than theirs yet I studied twice as long as them.. The shear time spent reading, watching videos, listening to lectures, completing assignments seems bizarre for what is a part time course.. Some of the assignments, essays seemed completely irrelevant to the course taken.. Every single assignment, lecture, book has a heavyweight leftist political slant.. I spent 5/6 years often being told how bad it was to be British.. I was the only man on most courses.

In summary.. I wouldn’t do it again but once you’ve committed you really have to finish the course.

You’re probably eating a hell of a lot worse on a night out.

I’ve witnessed personally.. condemned meat, unfit for human consumption sold to the local curry houses.. ducks caught by the local junkies (even dead rotting ones) sold to the Chinese takeaway next door to me.

I wouldnt worry too much about a bit of chlorine.

Sounds like I best work on the MIL to put her hand in her pocket.. Thanks for confirming my thoughts/fears.

I’d kindly ask her to find someone else (who knows what to do) to do it for her and pay for it.

    You are either

    a) not married.
    b) blessed with the very rare commodity called the sane MIL.

    🙁

You (I) forget just how filthy rich some people are until you start looking at their boats.

    Gorgeous boat though.

Re the daughter question.. I have four and I would have no problem with them being podium girls whatsoever if they chose to do it. I would have more of a problem with people assuming they can dictate what my daughters should or shouldnt do.

So any paid activity is acceptable if you can find someone to volunteer for it?

Maybe the question should be rather, if you cannot handle what you see, then you should be questioning yourself, not asking them to hide.

They have the right to do it.. and if that troubles you, you have the right not to look.. You do not have the right to tell them what they can or cannot do.

If everyone involved is doing it willingly, I don’t see a problem. I do see a problem though in this current penchant for some people to dictate to others what they should and should not be doing and in some way assume it a righteous cause. It’s not.

I cant say I’ve even ever met any celeb, not even a D list one.. nearest is seeing one of my employees giving directions to someone once and he came back and said it was Paul Daniels & Debbie Mcgee.

Only other thing that could count is that I was having a piss in the local pub… the guy stood doing the same next to me was the very drunk brother of prob the most famous British Actress at present.. he looked at me, said ‘Youright mate’ then proceeded to slide down the stainless steel urinal falling into the trough 😆

It really isn’t. It is like being in a team and finding out that most of the team are deluded, selfish and have no idea what being in a team means..

No.. it’s like the teachers pet who always got to choose who got picked for the football team.. The teacher decided his pet was a bad idea. So the ex teachers pet is now bitter, slagging the teacher off and running the team down at every opportunity even though it’s the same teacher and the same players, abiding by the same rules and playing to the same standard they were previously.

Depends if he’s good at is job, or cheap.. preferably both. I know plenty of people who have a job simply because they are of the same political persuasion as their employer and woefully bad at it.

Loved the small bales as a kid.. lost count of the number of times I’ve been buried under a collapsed straw castle.

At least the modern giant square ones can pose a fun physical challenge to the destruction of the haystack.

Only thing the big round ones are any good for is rolling down hills which is not only boring but dangerous if they’re at the side of the road.

The Sutton Hoo helmet was an iconic image in history textbooks when I was a kid, and actually seeing it for real, 40 years later, was one of the most exciting things I’ve ever done.

Same experience for me.. I’d never been to london before much less the Museum.. wandering around in a state of pure amazement, I turned around to be confronted with the Sutton Hoo Helmet a few inches away from my face and was utterly stunned.

RE pubs.. there was one directly across the road from the main entrance.. nice beer and a very friendly barmaid 😉

NEVER worth a quick visit… You could spend a week in there and still wish you had more time.. but another vote here for Sutton Hoo & Egyptian sections.

Aye.. a couple of members at my local club also have boats on Ullswater and asked me to crew at the Birkett, but it clashes with the Supernova Nationals the other end of the country.

    Maybe next year.

As a side note.. Dont the Orange lot also do a bit of sailing? I was competing in the tiger trophy at Rutland and there was a boat with OrangeMTB sponsorship.

. I also discovered the “Solution” which is a lovely little boat for lake racing

Was tempted by a solution as they do look a lovely boat, but the class open participation is dire and the numbers just arent out there. One of my main criteria was a busy fleet, so been racing Supernovas for a couple of years now and atm it is buzzing with a good circuit and big crowds at most events.

As I said previously.. really reminds me of the old MTB racing scene. A few top boys to chase, the rest of the fleet helping each other and everyone pissed the Saturday night.

Only got into sailing in my mid 40s after years of pestering by the sailors that my local club where I windsurfed. Biggest regret of my life not getting into it sooner. I am totally addicted.

Been at it a few years now and do the open race circuit and the nationals. Reminds me so much of MTB racing in the good old days 80/90s; Great crowd.. familiar faces.. fantastic crack.. get to spend weekends at some stunning locations.

Depending on the boat.. it can be a very cheap sport. It’s much cheaper than my MTB was and none of the new model cr*p every year.

Benefits.. no broken bones.. 15mph feels like 50.. worst that can happen is you can get wet (albeit the exception of course).

There are some real crap boats out there though and unfortunately lots of clubs are populated by very old guys offering to take you out in boats that will immediately put you off sailing. Choose the boat and the instructor wisely and you’ll have a pastime that can carry you competitively to an age no other sport can.

elzorillo – hope that’s MTB, you’re going to be shitfaced reasonably quickly if it’s a road ride.

Yep.. all offroad (except for the pub car parks of course) 😉

I am assuming here you mean without a separate wired power supply.. POE is the way to go.. 1 cable to the camera carries signal and power direct from the DVR.

If alternatively you mean no cable at all.. I doubt that’s possible without changing batteries every day.

Ale.. Rough calculations over the years have resulted in the belief we stay calorie neutral at 1 Pint per 5 Miles.

I think he’s saying that even if you do, you won’t get three points and a fine of half your wages

Why wont you? the rules are pretty clear.. 31-39 in a 30 is 50% of your wage and three points.

Sensationalist post, is it not if you’re a band C offender?

How is it sensationalist? 50% is the bare minimum for band a.. band c is 1.5x your pay packet.

Every year since god knows when, we’ve held a big Euro party on Eurovision night, but this year I proposed we cancel the party and instead bathe in the tears of the remoaners with a hot tub brextravaganza.

    It’s going swimmingly 😉

The worst thing about all of this is that the banks could if they wished trace the route of the money.. but banking secrecy wins.

Combis just seem such junk mechanically. I bought my old Baxi back boiler s/h when it was stripped out of a pals house as he replaced it with a combi.. That Baxi has run faultlessly since I bought it 26 years ago. Whilst I think my pal is on his third/forth combi.

Yeah it’s not so economical, but my bills arent that different to his.

Same as above, I use the Brompton C bag.. well made and plenty of pockets. I also had a Carradice for a while but flogged it.

By far my favourite is the Gilman.. looks very nice.. just cant find one in this colour..

Thanks for the replies.. I did expect I’d have to make a wooden subframe. Just wondered what it was clad in and how they got the edges so good..

    Thanks again
