If you think banks have too much power stop borrowing. We collectively as individuals, companies and governments have become totally reliant on borrowing, that’s the problem.

If only that were true.. I’ve never borrowed a dime (excluding a mortgage which I paid off damned quick), yet the gov have decided to pass all the bad debt of banks onto the shoulders of each and every tax payer in the land. What was the point of my own fiscal responsibility again???

Re the OT.. I didnt understand a word of it 😳

Jeez. I’m 54 next month and I’m not giving up yet!

🙂 I’m not giving up.. I just feel the loss of responsibility a bit unnerving after having it hanging over me my whole adult life and wondered how others coped.

It’s something people strive for their whole lives but feels a little daunting and come around a bit too soon.

    CRISIS?

heheh already got the younger wife n soft top (hers)..

Genuine question though.. After reading the mortgage free thread it just got me thinking. My parents generation seemed to spend their whole adult life creating/providing the family home. Yet looking at a large percentage of respondents in the other thread, we seem to be getting our financial freedom, escape of commitments earlier in life than they did. Some of it seems due to kids having to move away from the family for work/uni etc where in the past more would have stayed local, but still…

Only disadvantage I can think of owning, is that round these parts mid priced houses just arent selling.. So I’m trapped in a property that I’ve lived in for 20+ years, thats way too big for our needs now the kids have all flown the nest.

I sometimes think it’s all in my mind, but whenever I stop taking cod liver oil capsules, within a couple of weeks I start to ache.. start taking them again and it eases a couple of weeks in.

The ex was at fault to begin with. I came along and gave the person the strength to leave

So you encouraged someone to leave their partner then feel the victim when she leaves you? hehehhe

I cant see what the big deal is with his sentence.. Average sentence for a pitch invasion at footy is four months so six for this event was about right in my opinion.

This quote from Oliver Cromwell is as true today as it was in 1653…

“Ye have no more religion than my horse. Gold is your God. Which of you have not bartered your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?

Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defiled this sacred place, and turned the Lord’s temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices?

Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation. You were deputed here by the people to get grievances redressed, are yourselves become the greatest grievance. “

    Shame on those parasites

These colourd varnishes all seem naff.. I always found the best to be the small bottled stains then when you get the colout you’re pleased with.. a clear varnish.

(although I just completely ruined a pair of gate I made by using naff coloured varnish) 😳

What a very sad state politics are in.. I dont know a single person who has any faith in ANY politician presently.

Unfortunately the general concensus seems to be that we cant do a damned thing about it.

How can a genuine alternative ever become a reality when the media is bought and paid for by the establishment, with any alternative immediately vilified.

Why was it your word against his? You had photos, the other roofer, and could have had a surveyor in to list all the defects.

To be honest.. I was so drained by the whole experience that I just wanted to forget about him.

Obviously that would be bad for homeowners and disastrous for those with outstanding mortgages.

I wonder what percentage of the population bought at the peak of the housing bubble as opposed to the numbers forever now locked out of the market or even locked into unsellable property due to a failed market.

I doubt the gov are thinking of the average man.. more the banks balance sheet.

Since a couple of weeks ago we are a nation where children starve to death
    Thats not working

The child didnt starve to death due to poverty.. Thats just the expected Guardians spin on it. Read the article properly and you’ll see that the child died due to the mother being in a coma and unable to feed it. Still tragic, but not in any way a reflection on the current economic climate nor their economical position.

I can see the senario of loads of old people communes opening up in third world countries as it’s the only place anyone who took out a private pension will be able to economically survive.

Logically I’d use all savings to go full in against the mortgage, lower loan amount is always best.

The pessimist in me would keep some back in a ISA as an ‘insurance’ against job loss etc.

This is the beauty of offsetting.. you are reducing the term and you still have access to all your capital should you need it.

You still pay the same amount each month but the majority of the payment will go to reducing the initial loan amount instead of interest. Thereby reducing the term substantially.

Round these parts there are no shortages in property for sale. In fact there are so many for sale (including loads of empty new builds) that the number of for sale signs are a real eyesore.

The only houses selling seem to be at the top end where money is still no barrier and at the sub £100k where people simply buy, then stick someone on benefits in there. It’s easy money at the moment and a lot of my friends have been into it for ages. In my opinion two things need to happen firstly the profit being made by the BuyToLet guys fleecing the benefit system need curtailing somehow and then priced NEED to fall.

As it stands, first time buyers are being constantly outbid by BuyToLet guys and no matter how many starter houses are built this will continue until the easy profits from houseing benefit rental dissapears.

I had an offset mortgage and cant recommend it highly enough. If you’re in the position to be able to offset a substantial amount of the mortgage, then it’s a no brainer. No other form of saving (without risk) will offer the same benefit as offsetting your mortgage.
