I used to live in Isla Vista near Santa Barbara, California.

There was a bar there called “Study Hall”, very popular with the sorority girls, and, by extension, every redblooded male for miles around.

I heard that business was down for a while after the 2014 Isla Vista shootings.

inspired by this thread, I went and dug up my old, but almost unused Lansky set…

After about 20 minutes of practice, I managed to turn a really dull small santoku knife into a blisteringly sharp weapon of telephone page destruction!

No doubt that the good old whetstones are very good, when you have proper technique, but when you don’t have the time or patience to learn, the guided sets are very effective.

Buy one of these… I wish I had bought mine years ago! Perfect for boots, shoes, wellies, gloves, hats. Set the timer, set the heat, come back in a few hours, and everything is toasty warm and dry. I even use it to preheat my NorthWave winter boots if I know that it is going to be a cold ride.

First of all, enjoy a little time off!

Go to Nyhavn for beer and tourists… be sure to visit Christiania to see the locals, they Can be quite entertaining.

Get a burger at the Gasoline Grill at Landemærket, they have been named as some of the best burgers in the world. Be sure to get there early, when they are out of meat, they close for the day. Very hipster, but seriously good and not too expensive.

walk along the harbour and see the little mermaid. The statue itself is quite underwhelming, but it is a nice walk. Your wide Will appreciate the outlet malls at Langelinie, too.

Visit Tivoli, if it is open.

Instead of shopping on Strøget, visit the smaller Streets parallel to the pedestrian Streets.

    have a nice trip! 😃

    I have a Torchy BK 7ven on my bars…

Serious amount of bang for your buck if you don’t mind the battery pack.

    Hey Del!

I live in Nørresundby… about 2 kilometers from the MOD track in Nørre Uttrup. Not much good in the winter, though, as you can only ride from 4 in the afternoon till sundown! 🙂

    Fellow Dane, I presume?

I have small kids, and usually don’t ride until after 7 in the evening…

And I live in Denmark, where it gets dark at about 4 in the afternoon for months, so it’s great that I like riding in the dark!

Torchy on the bars, Exposure Joystick on the lid.

If I didn’t ride in the dark, I would not be riding at all!

With regards to your question: noise cancelling on the cheaper ones is perfectly acceptable, and if you are in a noisy environment, chances are that you will never notice a little white noise anyway… I suffer from tinnitus and the drone from engines gives me a splitting headache. I used SONY and Lindy before splurging for more expensive ones.

I tried several pairs before I bought my new pair… In the end I got an unbelievable deal on a pair of BeoPlay H9. Unbelievable sound quality, great noise cancelling, good battery life, more comfortable than the BOSE Q-series for me. And the luxury feel of those lambskin earpads is just pure heaven!

I see no reason not to try something cheaper, I do not think you will be disappointed.

when I was a kid, i had a silver dogtag on a chain around my neck, as did all other Danish kids at the time. One day in third grade I was playing footie on the gravel football pitch we had at school and lost the chain and tag. I looked for it for days, but no luck… We had a lost and found cupbord, but it never turned up there, either.

Then one summer day in the seventh grade I, noticed something shiny on the gound whilst kicking a few balls around. I picked it up, and it was my old dog tag. Scratced so the name was almost gone, but definetely my name and telephone number!

    So, basically… Live with it?

As I said, no major investments right now, I am saving up for a fully.

    Thanks for all your help!

It was a full service, at a RockShox certified service centre. There is no room for larger tyres, but I suppose I could go slightly lower regarding air pressure.

I always set up the compression as close to the “rabbit” as possible on RockShox. Would it make sense to go towards “turtle” instead? 🙂

I might also get away with lowering fork pressure a bit, but I would hate to have to worry about bottoming out on hard landings.

    Hmmm… Does not sound promising.

The fork had a complete overhaul less than 20 riding hours ago.

Anybody think that a little stanchion deodorant might help?

Nobby Nic 2.35 front tyre and Rocket Ron 2.35 in the back… both tubeless and at 24 psi. I am currently running DT Swiss XM481 rims. Internal Diameter is 30 mm.

My weight is 85 kilos, so I am not exactly a racing snake.

Well, just so happened that I found a pair of Craft cycling compression socks on offer, so no harm done in giving them a go.

    Thanks for your help!

Daern, you have positively identified my problem. The temples make contact with the webbing of my Giro Feature, and makes it very uncomfortable for me. In any case, The Jawbreakers do not fit me very well, but I might just try a pair of Radars or Flak Jackets to determine wether they interfere with the helmet.

    elwoodblues

I know that most people have temples go outside the straps, but that lifts the temples even further away from my head and makes the pressure points on my ears hurt even worse.

Additionally, the long temples hit the harness on my helmets behind the ears, and makes wearing the Oakleys uncomfortable for me.

If anything, the chain is too slack.

It’s a bit worn after 2000 kilometers, so I have asked them to put a new chain on anyway.

I already took a look at the suggested webpages, but I found them a bit hard to navigate, and there wasn’t much information related to the 8 speed hubs. And I know that the STW knowledge base is vast and filled with real world experience!

I live in Denmark, where at least half of the bikes sold are 5, 7, or 8 speed internals, so the LBS should know what they are doing… Perhaps they have a new mechanic?

Anyway, I have delivered the bike to them this morning. It is still under warranty, so they deserve to take a shot at it before I attempt to do some spannering myself.

Slight thread hijack. This subject is one I have been debating for a while with friends…

I have decided that I need a largish rucsac for long days out and commuting. Anybody who can vouch for the Osprey Radial 26?

Most importantly, will it hit me in the back of the head if I am on the drop bar bike?

    I am something of a serial renamer…

25 years ago I had a girlfriend called Camilla… My mate also found a girl called Camilla. I decided that in order to avoid confusion, I would start calling her Ellen. People still call her that, she still hates it.

I my old town, there was a kid called Tommy. He was always scruffy and caked in mud, so i renamed him Dirty Harry. 30 years later, even his mom calls him Harry.

I have a friend whose father had been calle Åge for 50 years. Real name Ronnie.

But then again, where I come from everyone has a nickname, my real name is Anders,  people call me Kalle.

I run a Purgatory in the front, Ground Control in the rear…

Great for most winter trails here in Denmark, as long as it is not too frosty.

Well, last year I was riding along one of the busiest trails in my area. When I rounded a sharp bend, I almost parked my front wheel between the buttocks of a young man who was busy “servicing” who I hope was his girlfriend. Nearly sent me over the bars! 🙂

He screamed, she screamed, I couldn’t stop laughing. She was not a bad looker, either. Not often you see a natural redhead these days! 🙂

As I have small kids, and a full time job, most of my rides are in the evenings…

I start out making a mental goal, believing that I can throw the kids to bed at 7, have a small chat with the wife while preparing packed lunches, and head out at 7:20.

Usually what ends up happening is this: Kids are bloody annoying, won’t get out of the bath, pun on their clothes, go to bed, etc. Wife is bloody annoying, and demand that I make some sort of decision about something that I don’t know anything about or have any interest in, before she does the exact opposite.

Head to the garage to get the bike, discover that my helmet smells funky from being put away wet, before finally leaving the house at about 8:15.

Wouldn’t have it any other way! 🙂

Get Them from Ze Germans, I use a size XL, and I find they are pretty true to size…

    Thanks, Philjunior!

I thought that you might have been referring to the Supremes, but I wanted to be certain.

How do they perform when its wet and icy out there? I realize that I can’t expect studded tire performance, but it would be nice to know that to expect when using them in Danish winter conditions.

Danish winter is usually cold and wet, not much snow, but plenty of ice.

What I would recommend aren’t as good in a 28 (I have 35s), but I would say consider rolling speed more than weight.

Philjunior, was wondering which tyres you are using? I have room for thirtyfives on my CAADX, and I like the extra volume… The roads where I live are pretty beat up, and skinny tyres make my teeth rattle out.

Turns out that Rose Bikes does not have the rims OR the spokes I wanted… No worries, I was plan-ning to buy from one of the others anyway.

I was looking at German shop Bike Components, and noticed that they stock 35 mm 28 hole rims from a company called “Newmen”… Never heard of them before, very limited information on the Net about them. Seems like they are designed in Germany, probably made of Chinesium. Does an-ybody have any experience with the brand?

    So much great advice!

I haven’t bought the rims or spokes yet, will be buying them from Ze Germans, as I am in Denmark and postage is cheap. I can get DT Swiss competition spokes from Germany at about half a pound a piece. My LBS charges 2 pounds for a single spoke!

The recommended Spoke sizes I get from the calculator is 303,1mm – 304,1mm – 304,2mm and 303,5mm… and the spokes are available in 302 and 304mm.

I know that the stated ERD is sometimes a little off, but I do not trust my abilities to measure accu-rately, especially as there are washers and such to take into consideration.

I am really considering buying black nipples… Sounds kinda naughty, doesn’t it?

    elwoodblues
    Free Member

I knew I could count on the forum to give me some good advice!

I will definitely look into the book. Sounds like it will be money well spent to upgrade the spokes. Would you recommend that I go 302mm all round, or use the recommended 304 as well. The price difference is not insubstantial, as I would be buying individual spokes and not a whole box. The DT Swiss rims come with nipples and washers included, so I was inclined to use them…

Regarding rims, does anybody have any suggestions for 35 mm 28 hole rims?

I ride to work in my Marmot Precip.

Underarm zippers, the pocket lining is made of mesh, so when it’s hot it is usually enough to open the pocket zippers to cool down, pretty breatheable, and stylish looks for everyday use.

    Not cheap, though.

Edit: It is packable down to a very small size, but no carrying pouch provided.

Should think they would fit just fine, maybe a bit tight at the front…
