    Edgeware road.

Mainline stations are wild in the 2007 Flood variation. Don’t you mean the 1936 Flood variation? Which of course is not covered by the post-WWII summer rules.

Cycling is used extensively by top fell runners for training – so cycling uses similar muscles to running uphill.

Having jogged round the Scafells, Bowfell and Crinkle Crags a weekend ago – not been on the hills for three months before – I can confirm this.

Can also confirm it doesn’t help at all with downhills which wrecked my legs so totally they still hurt on Friday.

    For proof see Rob Jebb!

Of course Rob’s party pieces are the Three Peaks CX and the Fred Whitton, not your typical bike races… ;-)

An extra shot of coffee and a bit more patience sounds like the way to go.

Apart from not being a “mornings” type (consider yourself slapped Keva  ) I take a while to warm up. On group rides I tend to spin at the back for the first half hour while the rest of them rip each other’s legs off. Though it usually balances out later :-)

Going in I have two decent climbs and a long draggy stretch of imperceptibly uphill why-aren’t-I-going-faster (past the sewage works, unfortunately).

On the way home in the evening – when I’m ready for a proper blow – it’s just a quick spin back down the hills.

Maybe need to get up earlier, wake up properly and give the caffeine time to kick in…

It’s possible to ride under it, but only with a mate behind to unhook your camelback and provide a firm shove at the right moment :-)

Lots of fallen foliage around here this spring. Weakened by the snowfall and being brought down by wind now the leaves are out?

Yes (!) it’s been progressively rebuilt over the last few years.

First time I rode it was early 90s, when it was a loose eroded path you could slither down on a fully rigid Muddy Fox Courier. If you were young and daft enough.

    Those were the days

Going up onto Great Dodd (boggy bridleway from the Old Coach Road) then south along the Dodds ridge is a good call.

The Dollywagon descent is still rideable for those with the skillz *but* long travel and armour recommended, balls of steel obligatory. I possess none of those things… last time I was there (January this year) I mostly walked down it.

Your other option is to ride out to Dollywagon then backtrack over Helvellyn summit again, and go down Keppel Cove zigzags (fast and furious, but over rather soon) or down the Sticks Pass (some nice techy singletrack).

Watch out for the walkers, will be packed out this weekend…

Well, we get the chance to turf them out every five years (sometimes sooner).

Or there’s the flaming-torch-and-pitchfork method. Let us know how you get on ;)

That corner’s been talked up a bit more than it deserves  but it is one of those satisfying technical features that can be ridden *much* faster than you think, when you get it right.

So… who was riding and who was walking on the first Twin Brook crossing (the one with the rocky step-up)? ;)

Actually one of our faster regulars swears by drifting the outside line next to the fence all the way round, but he’s an ex MX rider who also claims not to bother spotting landings for jumps until he’s already in the air… 8O

I’ve used High 5 for years for long mountaineering days as well as riding – usually mixed at 50% of what it says on the tub. Plus flapjacks / fig rolls etc. No side effects…

Buses hourly or better to Bristol, also regularly to Frome, Bridgewater, Taunton etc.

Trains non-existent, the nearest mainline station is Castle Cary (and Temple Meads).

Commuting locally by bike would be manageable (eg Shepton, Street) but I wouldn’t fancy going up the A39/A37 to Bristol every day – narrow, hilly, lots of heavy goods traffic.

Another Wells local here. Buzz summed it up pretty well.

Quite a bit more well-heeled than the other nearby towns (Shepton, Glasto, Street, Radstock) which is reflected in the house prices. Housing stock goes all the way from 15th century terraced cottages to modern estates. 150k-ish for a two-bed place at the moment. Good schools (if that’s an issue).

Not a place for wild nightlife but there’s some good pubs, an independent cinema, bits of live music /comedy / am dram. (Reginald D. Hunter did a live standup show last year!) Lots of choral music at the cathedral if you’re into that kind of thing. Glasto is a few miles away once a year. Bristol’s in reach for proper nights out.

No shortage of local riders – I ride mostly with the Shipham Miners Arms lot and the Bike City boys are out all the time as well.

Bit rude suggesting this now, seeing as I just rode it on my own on Saturday…

    The Miners crew :D

That was the one night in five years the group’s accidentally split apart – everyone shot off in different directions over the Ham and we ended up with about four different splinter groups straggling back to the pub.

Good to see you again the other night at the rock BTW! (That was me with the hip flask if you’re wondering…)

Once found a guy camping on top of Burrington Ham while we were on a Thursday night ride. He was sat there staring morosely into the embers of his campfire in the dark when fifteen of us hammered past in random directions with full beam LEDs and HIDs… must have terrified the poor bloke

cynic-al: tyres of all widths will have the same contact area when inflated to the same pressure and supporting the same weight

crikey: So my car tyre at 30 psi has the same contact area as my bike tyre at 30 psi?

So your car weighs the same as your bike??

Dunno where you got the bike from, but I’d be asking for my money back…
