Moving in the opposite direction here. About 6000 staff set to have their hours reduced by 1 hr per week, which for me means a drop of about £740 per year.

We’re effectively being sacked then re-employed on the new contract. Which is nice.

I had this when my car was declared a write off last year. Cost me £3000 and I was offered £1675. At first I was I pretty hacked off & their appeals process stated I needed to provide 3 examples of the same vehicle for the £1675 or greater.

After scouring the net I couldn’t find any. Turns out my car had depreciated more than I thought and could be had for cheap as chips. In fact it made the offer from the insurance company look positively generous…

Slightly off topic but what are your respective MSc courses if I may ask?

I’ve been contemplating a distance learning MSc, which would also be a career change (building surveying) for a while now, but the lack of face to face contact puts me off for a subject in which I would have limited knowledge. Particularly, as like the OP, its been a while since I studied.

EDIT: And in ref to the OP, perhaps the lecturers are marking conservatively as its early into the course. Maybe they don’t want to go awarding top marks to all students right from the off, for fear of lulling you into a false sense of security that this distance learning is a piece of cake 🙂

Rather begruddingly I have begun to wonder the same.

I had, by quite some margin, my biggest off last year, which resulted in a broken elbow, fractured nose, lost tooth and split from nose to lip. Like you I was able to freewheel back down to the car & drive myself straight to A&E.

Also like you, I was on my own but late in the day @ CwmCarn and on a section I’ve ridden loads of times before with no issue. I still don’t actually know how I crashed, but due to the bent R/H crank arm I think I caught a root/rock which threw me off. My gloves were spotless despite the rest of my being drenched in blood and mud, so I didn’t even have time to put my hands out to break the fall.

I’ve been out since, but very cautious and now I’m not too keen (nor my fiance tbh) on riding alone, which is a shame as it means I’m riding less than I used to 🙁

+1 I hear a lot of people explain they recycle (as do I) but if you look at the waste hierarchy recycling is actually pretty far down the list of options to reduce env impacts.

I always thought the 2 second rule (double if its raining) was a good judge for maintaining a safe distance by which to minimise the risk of a collision.

I seriously doubt anyone has memorised every stopping distance required for a given speed, and actually leaves this gap to the car in front every time they drive.

I just wondered what the best course of maintaining them was (if any), whether that be grease, teflon lube, silicon spray etc etc.

I’m pretty fastidious when it comes to washing so never jet wash and keep the garden hose away too.

I was wondering if there was some non-intrusive maintenance that could be carried out to prolong em?

This is what I have. Not ridden any other CX bikes to compare it too but it has full guard mounts (on the carbon fork too) so works well for my commute.

Feels pretty light too and zips along a fair rate of knots, even with the CX and not road tyres.
