I almost did the opposite journey today (cardiff-exmouth) & motorways were fine. Think its the side roads you’ll need to be careful on. Not sure what exeter is like but in exmouth quite a few of the side streets were pretty treacharous earlier this evening.

Dont talk to me about car insurance…!

Just had my renewal through. Was £290 last year with First Direct which was my cheapest yet. I’m 28, driving for 10 years, 6 years no clamims. My renewal is now £477 😯

Going on there website I can get a new quote for £430 which is better (and stupid) but I’m quite reluctant to pay more than last year given I haven’t made any claims.

No wonder so many people dont bother with insurance, its a crippling cost that for me seems to increase each year I dont claim.

To be fair it is called a drive thru for that very reason. If they allowed everyone to walk through then they may as well do away with the whole drive thru concept and tell people to go inside the restaurant and order a take out!

Home maintenance is a bit of a small prob for me as on street parking ehich usually means my car is in a different street or boxed in so hard to work on…

I’m guessing coming into cold winter months something a bit less viscous would be preferable?

Checked back through the service notes/receipts but cant find any reference to the make of oil used.

Not forgetting one of the best bits about the trails around Rudry/Caerphilly Mtn is a food/beer stop at the Maenllwyd.

I have fond memories of a plate of ham, egg and chips and a lovely ale 😆

Haven’t ridden the local trails much this year. If I ever get a set of lights I might join up with the Weds night crowd – sounds fun.

+1 for any Cardiff based chaps wishing to share costs. I've been thinking about doing a skills course for a long while now but would be happy to join a group session.

I very much doubt if any of the Prius' I see get 70 – they're always flying past me at about 80-90 on the motorway 😉

I wouldn't bother with a Diesel compared to the 1.6 unless you're going to do a lot of miles.

Mainly to be used for work commuting ect and the occasional long trip away so guess premium of a diesel isnt worth it for these miles? I probs average around 12-14k per year.

My Laguna is a 1.6 which is quite a small engine for the size of car and is fine on the motorway so a 1.6 Focus should be simialr performance I imagine.

Looking around the mk1 Focus and older (oap :D) civics would be in my price range. Shame though, I like the idea of the flippy seats but it doesnt sound as though they're on the older civcs.

Yup, as much as I like Octavias and would happily have one, I just know that despite similar lengths/floorpans etc the gf would just look at it as a shell and not the physics of it and think its too big!

Around 30 mpg doesnt sound too great from the 1.8 though, wonder if the 1.6 is much better.

Coopersport – is the civic you mention the oldish one? i.e. not the one with triangular exhausts and same shape as the original type r?

Will also check out honest johnnys advice too.

Octavia/mondeo too big methinks. The missus will also be using it and she was used to a fiesta so something the size of a focus is about the biggest I can go as a compromise.

The rickshaws look like a brilliant solution. We've got (or had as I haven't seen them for a while) the pedal versions in Cardiff but they're a bit slow and not too good at keeping up with motorway speeds.

I went through periods of doing this although (touch wood) I havent done so for a while.

There's a proper medical term for it which I cannot recall at the mo…

I went to see an orthodontist and I had two options, a rubber gum sheild which worked but felt wierd wearing at night (and isnt too attractive if you're on the pull) or some re-working of my teeth (basically via a dremmel!) to adjust my bite pattern.

If your going to be parking in ncp, which I assume you'll want to do if you want to park anywhere near town, then you'd be best off parking in the new car parks by the St Davids 2 shopping arcade.

Evening rates there are much better than say the ncp off Westagte Street even though they are also ncp – I think they're cheaper to encourage people for late night shopping and to the new restaurants.

Failing that you could possibly park on Cathedral Rd and walk in. Easy walk but not guarenteed a space and Cardiff have just this week launched a new parking control scheme (think lots of Council wardens in uniforms prowling the city) which sounds quite strict on problem parkers. 🙂

Trail rat – I leave enough gap to make sure I can see the bottom of the tyres of the car in front – a thing I learned in Cop training

Ditto that. When I rear ended a car on the M5 which resulted in 5 cars shunting each other up the backside, the police gave the first 4 cars (myself and 3 others) the option of all being charged for driving without due care and attention or letting our insurance companies sort it out.

We all opted for option 2 but I presumed the other drivers were at fault for not leaving a large enough gap to the car in front.

Pretty sure provision of toilets in public buildings will be covered by some sort of regs but would depend on the type and use of the building, i.e. whether its an office/restaurant etc. Not all the public libraries where I live have toilets for the use of customers.

They're the basic models, preload adjustment I think although I do have a medium and firm spring for them. They've also got the chrome stanchions which do look to have some pitting on the surface.

If your interested thang I can measure the steerer. Not looking to get much over postage for them – having a clear out and looking to de-clutter so want to get rid.

P.S they're pretty weighty binners so I reckon some good owning could be had… 😀

I think the Carphone Warehouse would offer an unbranded one but the contract is more expensive. Usually when you are in a contract you can mention you're thinking of leaving and they sometimes offer you a better deal.

Dont mind getting one locked to Orange so long as they haven't put all their usual Orange paraphanalia (e.g. homescreen, different menu's etc) on it.

Mmm, wouldn't necessarily sue the Council as I'd probably be thankful I was alive. However, I would be more than a little p*ssed that they were claiming against my insurance for repairing the wall!!
