Came off my road bike on a patch of ice on a sharp downhill left-hand bend. While I lay stunned in the road, maybe a dozen cars drove carefully round me and my bike.

When I dragged myself off the tarmac and onto the pavement, several pedestrians carefully stepped over me and went about their business.

People of Carnforth, thanks for absolutely nothing!

Looking at that picture of FAS facial symptoms is very disturbing. Barak Obama seems to have at least some of those features

And a couple of my colleagues at work have several

And looking in the mirror, I see a couple in me!

Is it scientific, or is it bollox?

    Hello CountZero

    appropriate name!

look at the list of people sheldona’s listening to

Actually, old boy, if YOU read his post properly you’ll find he asks for

    something else

So (DURRRR – that’s a reference to The Simpsons) recommending something like he’s already listening to is not a helpful response

    and he may be

old enough to have heard of most as well

but that doesn’t mean he’s been adventurous enough to listen to them, does it now?

    Not impressed by your claim:

I even have recorded works by a number of them

Most of the people I know have CDs (“recorded works” LOL!) by all of them – often multiple versions by different orchestras/conductors/soloists

Welcome to the world of middle class, educated people with musical tastes which extend beyond the popular

Go and expose your proletarian education somewhere else, there’s a good boy. I think this topic has gone beyond your intellectual capacity.

    😉

This is a meaningless, utterly solipsistic post

Playoffs in which activity, game or sport – curling? table tennis?synchronised masturbation?

    I just about recognise:
Newcastle, Bath and Leicester as towns
    Wasps as insects
    Irish as a nationality
Quins as five children born at the same time to the same mother
    Worc as Worcester or Worcestershire
O’Leary as the name of the appalling CEO of Ryanair
    Sarries as utterly meaningless

What makes you think that the average STW member has any interest at all in whatever pointless sport you are trying to promote here?

Barbarian means “a person who can’t speak your language properly”

In other words a foreigner, an alien, an outsider, someone who doesn’t belong to the mainstream culture

So Welsh, North of Ireland, Scottish, Scouse and Geordie players are over-represented

Mind you, at the public school I went to, the Barbarians were all the rugby tossers who weren’t good enough for the 1st XV

And they certainly couldn’t speak English properly

Actually grizzlygus you are right. All they did was hit him on the head with an iron bar.

    So that’s all right then

    However:

something which he did over 40 years ago

Thirty years of which should have been served in jail, but weren’t, because he escaped, so he’s still got some time to do however old he may be

‘Well I’ll go t’foot of our stairs’

A perfect example of an idiom – utterly impossible to work out the intended meaning by examining the actual words

[pedant mode] this actually should read “well I’ll go t’t’foot…”, because the full expression requires “to the” and therefore two apostrophes of omission are needed [/pedant mode]

Next time she asks your opinion, tell her it’s not up to you, it’s down to her.

[pedant mode] Most of the “idioms” on the idiomsite seem to be straight metaphors or even just aphorisms/truisms. The essence of a true idiom is that the listener/reader can’t possibly work out the intended meaning from the actual words, e.g “hard cheese” to mean bad luck [/pedant mode]

    eldridge

when you look at older people, what IS there to respect ? Greedy, self-centred, knowitall grumpy gits

My (still living) father-in-law served on HMS Indomitable when it was aircraft carrier support on Operation Pedestal, the convoy taking desperately needed supplies to an Axis-airforce beseiged Malta (Google it to find out just what a desperate situation this was at the time)

He then served in the Pacific against the Japanese

What is there to respect? If you don’t know, you’re very badly-informed

    No footie talk tonight?

No until you came along, no – thank God!

    Hi GrahamS

I know this is a bit late, but FGS the guy who gets washed off the rocks is a complete moron. Huge waves are washing across the shelf he is standing on and by some freak of good luck it’s several minutes before he’s knocked into the sea – minutes which he should have used to work out that where he was standing wasn’t safe and he shouldn’t be there. He wasn’t plucked off the land by a freak wave – you can see, even in the distorted tiltshift view, that several similar waves had already passed over that rock shelf. He was an idiot who put other people’s lives at risk to get him rescued

To suggest that the supremely competent, well-equipped, well-trained, brave SAR people are

toys just like him and just as vulnerable

is utter rubbish. Their skill, experience, training and courage make them utterly different from him, most notably in their assessment and acceptance of risk

Back to film-making 101 I’m afraid – the duty to make it clear to your audience which characters deserve your empathy, and which don’t

You’ll know it’s gone through correctly if, withing 24 hours, you receive a spoof PayPal email asking you to re-confirm your bank account and credit card details

Corrupt staff at PayPal sell on details of recent transactions to scammers who then generate these emails in the hope that people who’ve recently dealt with PayPal will be less sceptical about emails from “PayPal”

Exactly the same thing happens if you contact the UK Income tax people

I think the idea is that the hours are compulsory but the area where you put them in is subject to some degree of choice

50 hours by the age of 19 is a staggeringly modest ambition

The youth demographic at whom this is aimed can easily put in 50 hours of aimlessly hanging around outside the local offie harrassing pensioners and little kids within the space of one Easter weekend!

And what choices will they be offered about where/how the hours are served?

50 hours building more MTB trails in Grizedale Forest? Great idea!
50 hours cleaning up chewing gum, dogshit and food wrappers outside Kendal McDonalds? Great idea!
50 hours shelving books in Kendal library/ That’s what I’d go for

This is turning into what Americans would refer to as “Fimmaking 101”!

If you want to “emphasise the skill and bravery of the SAR team” you don’t film them using the same techniques that “show us as toys and insignificant specks”, because that way the SAR teams end up looking like toys and insignificant specks! LOL

    Hi Pauly

Yes you are right – I missed that bit and I apologise for implying that copyright was not properly obtained.

Sorry if you felt my response was motivated by anger.

Where I come from, you can say that you absolutely, completely and totally disagree with someone, without actually being angry with them.

I hope you will accept that complete disagreement is not the same as anger.

I still hold to the view that the video treatment of this subject, including the soundtrack, is utterly inappropriate and amateurish.

But I’m really, really not angry about it 🙂
