08 Five, RF Deus cranks and BB mounter Stinger here.

I had to fit a 1mm BB spacer between the Stinger and the cranks, otherwise the granny ring bolts caught on the stinger. Before I machined the 1mm spacer, I’d tried a 2.5mm but that caused the BB to go very stiff. I then spent ages thinning the spacer down until the BB spun freely and the chainring bolts didn’t catch!

I’ve recently put the RF cranks on another bike and replaced them with XT ones. No issues with that and I’ve removed the 1mm spacer.

So to surmise, it’s a RF crank vs Blackspire Stinger compatibility thing – maybe?

Think I’ve fettled my rear shifting too.

I cut a length of fairly rigid rod from an old golf umbrella canopy and I have taped it to the rear mech cable, from about 7cm up from the lowest cable guide on the seat stay up to about 7 cm from the bottom of the top tube. The top cable guide on the seat stay now has a loosely fastened zip tie through it. This allows the cable to move but forces it down towards the mech were it makes a nice wide loop. Seemed to work perfect last night, I just need to neaten it up a bit and post some pics.

Cheers sailor, so when the suspension compresses does the excess cable now loop near the mechs rather than by the seat tube? Think i’ll try that as when the cable bends at the top, down shifts are near impossible.

    Sailor,

Got any closer pics of your cable routing solution?

Good man – and yes they can but you’ll need a new axle

I bought mine ex-demo, it was described as 3/5 but other than the freshly painted frame, the wheels and the cranks, everything was new! Worked out a right bargain, hate to tell you, but there’s a red 15″ one on Oranges website right now!

Have a pic of my 17″ Blood, just for the hell of it!

Can’t really add anything to the above comments really, only that I have a Five SE too and they are totally different bikes.

I’ve not had any issues with chain slap, but I’m running a chain device and a layer of velcro on the frame.

Get one, just not in Neon Green, they’re a bit common!

Jumping in a shopping trolley at 4am in the morning (very drunk) and proceeding down a very steep hill whilst stood up…..it was one of those shallow trolleys so I was quite high up with no real protection, eventually I hit a kerb and my face hit the floor first and acted as a makeshift brake!

    Or

Trying to stop a buzz from our electric shower by sticking a screwdriver down the side of the motor. After several trips from my perch on the side of the bath tub to the main power switch on the landing and back, I got impatient and thought ‘one last go with the power on!’
Stupid me had my finger on the screwdriver shaft! My hand spasm’d tight around the driver, then my arm went stiff, then my heart started to hurt as my whole upper body went tense. Luckily I managed to walk backwards down the bath top before falling off on to the bathroom floor!

Stick some Enduro Seals in, my Talas started to show signs of wear, (for a second time)over a year ago. I stuck some Enduro Seals in and continue to change the oil regularly and the wear has not got any worse. I’m going to run them ’til they die now!

However, there are some very cheap bladders here

What spec 5 is it? Some come with Easton Havens now (715mm ish), which I have on my 5. I also have some Sunlines on my Blood and they feel the same. These have been cut down to 710 so I guess the original width 745mm might do you!

    Buy cheap, but twice.

I replaced the bladder in an Aldi bag with a Camelbak bladder 4 years ago. Not missed a beat since. (the original bladder lasted about 6 weeks before the lid split)
Isn’t there a lifetime guarantee on the Camelbaks?

Like a lot of others on here, I’ve been an SPD user for the best part of 20 years and am very comfortable with them and have never had an issue with unclipping in the face of danger, it’s just natural to twist my foot as it leaves the pedal. However, I recently bought a new bike, an Orange Blood so thought it was time to try flats, Superstars with AM41s.
I’ve had the bike 4 months and only now am I starting to get used to them, I still feel a little nervous going over drops, but only when I think about it.
I’m still riding SPDs for longer XC rides on my Five and here’s the eye opener, on a number of occassions one of my feet have come unclipped going over rough ground and through corners, which never used to happen. I’m guessing that riding flats has enabled me to distribute my weight better and alter my foot position to suit the terrain and corners etc and I’m now trying to do it on SPDs, but this obviously makes my foot unclip.

I’m still not 100% confident on the flatties and it does feel harder work on climbs but there’s is definitely a skills benefit to using them.

Well I’ve met a few of his mates and they all have the same attitude towards it, so I guess I’ve met more than one, so therefore ‘some’.

Edit, just realised you may not have been directing that question at me!

His name is Gary, but he does always have a black block over his eyes so you can never really tell what he looks like!

Some of these soldiers are a bit ‘menatlly removed’ from the situation they are/were in. I work with a guy who spent 6 months in a cave in Afghanistan ‘eliminating’ potential Taliban trainees.

They were overlooking a valley and every so often there’d be a small convoy travelling through the base of the valley. His job was to determine if they were farmers or recruits for a nearby training camp.
Once he’d decided they were the enemy, he’d call in an air strike, and in his words ‘vapourise them’.

He talks about it like he was playing with toy soldiers! He’s not the slightest bit bothered that he wasn’t ever really sure if he’d just ordered the death of some local farmers or the enemy!

I suppose he is some sort of hero, but a bit of me can’t help think that he’s just a bit crazy!

I had this issue, the end cap had fused to the spindle, I ended up drilling it off and replacing the end cap and spindle, cost about £25 plus the bearings iirc!

I’ve got it the other way round, old Mini Pro levers with Tech 4 calipers no issues at all for the last 2 years or so!

I’ve ridden SPDS for as long as I can remember but since buying an Orange Blood, I’ve been using flats with varying success.

I posted a thread a few days back asking about pin heights on flats, can I ask here, what do people find works best, same length all over, or higher or shorter at front/back/sides?..

    Sorry for the hijack!

Eh? I have a ‘one account’ and if I owe anything, I haven’t got anything? We had paid it off about 5 years ago and just kept the account around about £500 to £1500 in credit, anything over went in to a savings account. We’ve now transferred the ‘facility’ on to another more expensive house and put the savings back in the ‘one account’ to lower what we owe and hence reduce the interest we’re paying.

Maybe ours is structured differently, we don’t have an owing and owning part, it’s just one big debt that decreases on pay day and then builds back up during the month..

Just get some Shiamno 520s from Merlin for £17 including cleats and swap the top plates, sure they won’t be coated in the posh XTR stuff, but they should swap over and it’ll only cost a few quid more than cleats alone.

Surely the point of an offset mortgage is just having ‘one account’?

Mine worked a treat on my old house and had the mortgage paid off in no time. New house now and going well again. We buy everything on the credit card and pay it off before it attracts any interest.

Well, it broke after about 5 rides, but Leisure Lakes tell me the all do, but since it’s been rebuilt, it’s been fine. L’Lakes said that they send most of them back for a rebuild (in all sizes) and they come back working better and more reliable. Mine does feel smoother since it was fettled.
