I have some 25 year old 531 mtbs that are still going a road one from 1947 and my mum has hers from 1953 they are still in one piece

Best not to use them on lightweight road rims as you may bend the rim putting tight tyres on

I fixed up a students bike when I ran a cycle hire place .It was a crappy old appollo with all the problems stated by the op. Cost to me about an hour no parts just a service the girly student thought it felt like new and her commute home was 5 minutes quicker (about 1 1/2 miles!)I charged her a cup of tea and a bit of cake as it was quiet at the time.

If they are that old all the cushioning will be knackered get some proper running shoes and get fitted for the way you land (over/under pronation)

leave it as it is .I have bought old road frames from the 40s and prefer original paint you cant hide a knackered frame that way

De-hydration can be a problem use an elecrolyte drink to replenish salts.Has this been a long term problem or is this a new bike where you are not sure of your seat position yet?

I dont see the point in spending loads on a car and wouldn't buy one even if I had the money.

I to am a fan of 853 520 is I think Reynolds tubing made under license in the far east I think it is the same as cheapy 4130 standard stuff .I would go with 853 as the basic rule is buy the best frame you can as it's better to upgrade that than a cheap one

Well I have a used 7 speed mech on 9 speed as long as the mech will cover the width it should be ok.Anyway just noticed you want to use 10 on 9 so that shouldn't be a problem and if 10 speed jockey wheels were a bit thinner they would fit in a 9 speed chain as well

I didn't know that bit about tribars is it because they allow drafting in races now and being on tribars is not safe in relation to braking?

    Edric64

Buy tri bars they save you loads of time and use a normal road bike as it's probably more suited to continued use

I have my own business cleaning bus shelters for councils which is a dirty shitty job but on the first visit to meet a client at their office it's always collar tie and jacket.First impressions always count even if the next time they meet me I am in hi vis and filthy.

By being self employed you are saving them loads in holiday pay sick pay insurance costs etc all of which you will have to cover from now so you will need more gross salary than before or you will be seriously out of pocket. What business are you in?

The reason J W looks like he is not looking where he is going is because you get told to look through the bend to where you will end up and plan your line and he always rode with his head nearly on the deck!!
