A friend had the 2013 models both as demo bikes and I took each of them out for a ride. I thought the Whyte was great and really enjoyed it, pretty much disproved all my preconceptions about 29ers. My only real criticism was that the wheels felt fragile and i could not imagine them lasting. The Scott, a Genius but cannot remember which model (carbon fibre) had lots of buttons and wires but felt awful and confirmed all my preconceptions about 29ers.
My friend bought the Scott and is very, very happy with it three months on.
Not sure that this is very helpful but does show that we are not all the same.

I am hoping to be racing on 21st but have not really been to QECP except when passing through on the SDW.
Thinking of heading up there tonight to have a look. Are the tracks to be used around to have a look at or is it strictly out of bounds until official practice etc?
Will go anyway and have a look at the red run and all your hard work.
    Cheers

Trails are no longer tip top. Now too dry, dusty and marbly in places. Perfect last week but I’m not complaining.

What is it with this mental schism? I have had loads of french and italian cars over the years (currently have a Panda HP100 and an Espace (2nd one))but have had 2cvs, Renault 4s, Alfa Suds, Alfa Sprints, X19s as well as all the 205 gtis and 306 gtis and a Fiat Multipla (my favourite ever car that I did 100,000miles in,) Had a Citroen GS and a CX GTi Turbo 2 but had to sell it because it couldn’t even manage 20mpg. Was impossible to go less than 80mph, even if you were reversing down the drive. Hilarious
Never understood all the German fanboy stuff.
In the process of buying a Citroen Mehari but have not told my wife yet. As a consequence there may be a few very decent bikes on the classifieds soon.

I am trying to buy a Citroen Mehari. A 2cv but without all the sturdy bodywork. Now hugely expensive. Used to be able to pick them up for £500 or whatever currency applied. Should have done it then but we all know that now and we didn’t have the money then which is why they are so expensive now.

I went and will be going back at some stage. Really nice knowledgeable guy and interesting place to ride. Riding into San Sebastian left an impression. Also want to meet up with Carlos the Spanish giude who was a hoot.

36 as opposed to 34 is a marginal advantage of course but 10sp allows a clutch mech which means simpler chain retention with top guide only unless downhilling. For me that makes it worth going 10 spd.

I have had a couple for a while and they do seem to get through jockey wheel bearings more quickly. Not surprising with the increased loads/tension the jockey wheels are under.
Still well worth it. Simple/cheap real world improvement.

I saw that and I know that it is just shallow but do they really mean white hoses? I would rather just drag my heels on the ground.
I was just surprised to see no stock around other than some white hoses at CRC.
Their nominated dealer through hotlines for me is Evans but they seem to have nothing and so wondered if Goodridge have pulled out. If they have it is a shame because whereas the hoses may be all similar the Goodridge fittings are a cut above. Easy to use, even with braided and long lasting in my (admittedly limited) experience.
Will go the traditional route and make a phone call and actually try and speak to a real person on Tuesday to see if I can buy some somewhere.

You have to be a real hardcore hater not to like clutch mechs.

Plan on just using paint stripper and then polishing.
If it goes wrong then just take it to someone that knows what they are doing. Just don’t want to bugger up a favourite frame.

I went two years consecutively with friends and still rates as the best bike holiday for me. I have promised myself that I will go back at some stage. Both years that I went i had mechanicals. First year my forks went bang, Ady let me borrow some – 160mm on a hardtail!. Second year my hub went pop and no 150mm spares around and so he let me borrow a whole bike for the last two days.
Autumnal scenery and Molini were special. Meeting the chef trail building on the hill and the hotel owner coming in to the bar over the road because dinner was ready was great. Other guests were good when we were there as well which helped.

I think that it is great that we are all different because that bike does absolutely nothing for me and as such I am sure that the bikes I like would do nothing for others.

I use a 24″ rigid jump bike as a as winter bike. Just adjusted the gearing so that I can get it uphill. Just walk the dog with it but good fun coming down.Really good off little lips etc but rubbish brakes mean that you are often in a panic.

Probably will be but away at the moment but will contact you when I get back. Upgrading wheels on a Blood and swapping them on to another less burly bike.
    Thanks

Sram x7/x9 shortcage combo and any 36 cassette and price/weight combination you choose

    edoverheels

Unless you are trying to re use existing parts there is no point in going 9spd. 10spd means lots of 36 cassettes and more importantly clutch mechs. Only need a shortcage mech and a top guide of some sort (my preference is Paul’s Chain Keeper) for silent fuss free running.

    Another one for the Blood.
Decided that now that mine is a bit battered I would get it resprayed and all the bearings done and refurbish it generally – much cheaper than a new bike for my birthday. I bought it originally because I love hardtails but they do end up being a bit limiting in some circumstances. Also have a Soul, a rigid and a downhill bike for uplifts and keeping up with the kids but most of my time is on the Soul or the Blood depending on where and with whom I am riding.

My rigid bike that I built in 2005/6
This is when I had just finished it but have no photos since.
Ride it in the winter but also have a sort of singlespeed as well. Ride it in the summer for two hour thrashes and used it in a couple of XC races. Feels like cheating when you are climbing and love having it. Stay of the front brake when descending and hop over as much as you can.
Would hate to be without it and it is my longest owned bike but would not have it as an only bike.

Don’t sell up before you have clarified the planning.
AONB and SNCI and presumably outside the built environment meaning that countryside policy applies, a presumption against development despite what you have been reading in the papers mean that you probably don’t stand a chance which is why it is £10,000 per acre. Paddock or good farmland value. Build costs if you are paying professional planning and architects fees and a builder rather than doing it yourself will see little change out of £2000/m2 unless you know what you are doing.
Sorry, otherwise everyone would be at it.

I’ve just gone 24′ because of the weather and it’s the only SS we have in the house. Good fun but a bit panicky in the woods. The MX5 idea above. Enjoyable fun but cant rationally recommend it.
I also enjoy the looks from the ‘serious’ mountain bikers we have in the SE.

    edoverheels

Quite like the idea of SS and for the last week I have been riding as such to assess practicality which is fine. Thrash up, potter along the top and freewheel down which actually suits dog walking.
Would not be able to sell other bikes because they are all ‘needed’ – In fact how dare you even suggest it, that is against the rules.

I would imagine that Land Registry will only require a value to assess Stamp Duty and you will be significantly below any thresholds and so really a pretty meaningless value. Land will only be a ransom strip if it can become the key to enhancing the value of another piece of land such as controlling the access that can then facillitate development.
This does not appear to be the case here because otherwise you would not be so relaxed about it. Normally there is a lower limit on land transactions because otherwise why bother to instruct solicitors. That limit I often think is about £5000. Below that then it is possible take eventual ownership by adverse possession and don’t bother with solicitors thus saving the costs which if paying for both sides can quickly outweigh the value of the land (it is what the Highways Agency often do when handing back unwanted land after road schemes)
If it is just a strip of garden land then £1000 should not be unreasonable and will not cause raised eyebrows at the Land Registry.

I was about to ask whether we could arrange start times to be close to friends. So will send an email. We are different standards but not taking it too seriously. Well done for organising.

I had my right knee done after a ‘bucket handle’ tear about 8 years ago. Couldn’t walk for a day or so, couldn’t drive for a couple of weeks. riding again after a few weeks. Absolutely fantastic. No problems at all since and have to really think about which leg it was. Went in to hospital in the morning and was home by lunch and bored by tea time.
