Not a book but the joe beer site has plenty of turbo trainer workouts and they are free.I think its something like JBST they’re are others but I can’t remember at the moment.Ask on veloriders your sure to get plenty of advice on there.Plenty of good books to help with training mainly aimed at roadies with sections on static training.

Another vote for tom tom. My mother-in-Law borrowed ours and had no problems using it all, which by my reckoning means the chimps in Chester zoo would be able to use one.

I drove one on holiday and I really could not believe that a car so crude and badly made was still being produced in the 21st century its like something out of the 70s’ but crap.

Then I take it bruneep you showed the same disdain to your fellow workers for striking as you show to teachers for not going to work in the snow, at least you would be consistent.

Teachers don’t close schools, it’s their bosses- headteachers . I don’t think teachers are any lazier than any other group of workers its just that when a school closes it probably impacts on more people, in the form of parents. For many places of work a few staff down is an inconvenience a few staff off school means childrens safety can be at risk through lack of supervision. As I understand it Teachers must make every effort to get to work or they run the risk of not being paid and then in theory should offer themselves to the nearest school that is open.

Is the UK really the harshest riding conditions in the world? maybe maybe not. I never had any problems with fox forks in the past although Ive been running some revs for the last 18 months which are excellent.

I had a Honda VFR400 NC30 many moons ago which I truly loved I thought it was the dogs. If I came into some money, and the wife let me,I would love to own one again.

I had a a malt 4, a lovely black one, and now have a handjob amongst other bikes.Which is better?, honestly I really don’t know I think because they both are very good frames although I personnally think the price hike on the handjob makes it rather expensive compared to the malt 4.They are different rides but the malt 4 will build in to a great hardtail for a lot less than the handjob. For me though I prefer my black version compared to the current white one though. The malt 4 with reba teams in the sale section looks a REALLY good ride and cracking value.

I used to in my teens, as people have said its very good way to excercise. It also good for teaching youngsters about self discipline, confidence and control. Have a go if you dont like it stop going. Personnally I think its a very underrated sport.

Ring up get their name, preferably a supervisor then tell them you have a relation who is a personal friend of Jeremy Darroch ( he’s the chief exec), they watch Newcastle United together ( apparently he is a big fan) and you are going to get his personal number and ring him up to complain mentioning their name. I did this it really worked and my problem was solved very quickly.

You could also look at miche ( probably cheaper than the goldtecs ), record pista or ambrosio all make quality track hubs. Find a good wheel builder have a chat and get him to build you them.

As many have said buying a full racing bike for commuting doen’t make sense you would be much better with a light touring /audax bike with mudguards and rack. The good news is for £1000 you could get a pretty good one take a look at kinesis, pearson, paul hewitt, thorn to name a few.If it was my money Id go for a kinesis, a few people on club rides have them and they are cut above the usual hack training bike eg Ribble.

IMO the best way to improve your riding is to ride with others preferably by joining a good club where people will be happy to advise on all the things you have asked about. If your not used to it you should also see a big improvements in fitness. Riding with others is fun and a very important skill which will help if you decide to race or do sportives, you see many riders at sportives who clearly havent a clue, which is nerve wracking for them and dangerous for the rest of us.

I totally agree with munqe chick about hard cases I’ve always felt that the hard cases invite abuse from airport staff and it’s all in the careful packing and wrapping with bike bags.

Go for one of the women specific bikes
    Maybe
gary fisher big sur wsd 13″ ( ordinary big sur great bike, nice kit too)
    Trek 8000 wsd small
scott contessa scale xs or s
I would also consider the weight of the bikes too which I would think will help if your only 5’1″

A decent wheelbuilder produces a wheel which is more durable ( higher, more consistent spoke tension)and generally easier to maintain and repair. Good wheelbuilding is an art which machines can’t match.

Personnally I wouldn’t worry too much about needing a 105 specced bike as winter weather is very hard on many componenents and they can wear out and need replacing quickly. Wet salty roads don’t differentiate between tiagra and dura ace.

Have you looked at someone like Thorn, maybe something like their club tour probably wont be 105 for £1000 but good quality reynolds steel frames. I know someone with a sherpa and its as tough as old boots excellent tourer.
