I bought one for my son as a mini dh / freeride bike. It would be pretty heavy as a trail bike as it's frame is over built. The main problem with them is that standard, like Shimano, cranks won't fit. The cranks will catch the chain stays. You need to fit cranks with a wide chain line. Details are on the Mountain Cycle forum here. Not sure if there are cable stops for a front mech. You can put big forks on them though. My lad likes his and raced it up at Innerleithan in the winter dh series.

You'll be fine there with a rigid ss. The climbs although steep are relatively short. I've ridden rigid ss down the black, although it wouldn't be my first choice!

Had a good ride up there last night with some of the volunteer Rangers and a couple of others. It took us about half an hour to get up the Mary Towneley from the Buck Inn, with a mixture of riding, pushing and chatting. To get back down took about 8.5 seconds! Nice Timothy Taylors Landlord in the pub after as well.

Should be a jolly day on Saturday and it looks like we'll have a good sized group along from far and wide.

That route up behind the pub on the PBW will be a massive push for us mere mortals

It's a big hill but we have mountain bikes…..which can easily be push bikes 🙂

My 12 year old is coming and he'll be pushing so no one will be lonely at the back.

Put plenty on. It's really good. Not having to reapply much at the moment in the dry conditions. When it's wet I reapply after every ride. Best lube I've used for all year round conditions.

Took the Ibis Tranny for a ride round Cragg today. It's just about the most flowy trail in the UK. So much fun, and the great thing is that when you've ridden it once, you can just go round again.

The link route will be going ahead sometime this year. It will go from the top of Le Quarry over the moor and up to Rooley Moor Road (Mary Townely Loop). In itself it will make a great descent in to the top of Lee Quarry.

Trekster:
Is it worth a 6hr round trip from oop North?

Also is it worth a 6hr round trip from daahn saarf?

It is if you make a weekend of it and ride Lee Quarry on the Sunday. I could link you some accommodation if you're interested.

Night shred in the bag. I've been ticking off the trails that I'd avoid in the wet when they are just mud baths. Golden Pale Ale afterwards was a great help too.

Stiffee for sure. It's almost all smooth hardpack up there.

Just been out for my Hebden shred. Going to have a night shred later on as well.

Obviously conditions are amazingly good, fast, grippy, blah, blah, blah……just what you want to hear if you're stuck in an office.

The Cragg Quarry loop is supposed to be 4.5km (2.8 miles). However we kept putting extra turns in and deviated from the originally planned line to make best use of the shape of the ground, so it could be a bit longer!

You sure you want to ride UP the MTL

There's nothing like a gentle climb to start the day……and that's nothing like a gentle climb!

Those that want to race up there are just as welcome as those who want to amble along on foot. We'll all get up there and it's definitely worth the effort.

It is dry as a bone up there at the moment. Now is the time to ride it.

As said above repairs are in the pipeline.

Yoshimi – Still holds a good deal. If it took any more it be too heavy IMO. You've got external straps too for pads/full face/jacket or whatever. Just used mine today to carry full knee and shin and chunky elbow pads as well as full face helmet, jacket, mid layer, butties, tools, tubes, pumps, 1st aid kit, water.

Nan Bield backwards was ace and all ridden. There will be a feature in Singletrack magazine, in a couple of issues time, which will include the Pass Storm. It was part of a three day video shoot by MTBcut on a road trip with riding at Lee Quarry, Calderdale and Nan Bield. Riders featured were Danny Macaskill, Rowan Sorrell, Aimee Dix, Jo Barnes and me popping in here and there.

Sorry to miss you guys, Gavgas, at the end. We went to a pub in the first vilage we came to, Bampton I think, that was doing lovely food.

The larger Hydrapack bags are well worth a look. I've got this one and it's great for carrying bigger loads without loosing stability. Also compresses smaller when you're not packing so much gear. Quality construction.

I would also love to understand why kickers going up hill or just as you go into a berm add value unless they are the trail centre version of speed bumps

They are rollers, to pump, to give you speed.

f EdO is still building the trails I find it ironic that he railed at length in print about trails being sanitised for the good of no-one and then gets his hands dirty doing just that.

I don't see much parallel between bridleway sanitisation and the building of trails specifically for mountain bikes. Why is it sanitised? Seems to me that it's now faster and has more flow. There are also lots of off piste lines still there that can be ridden. The rocks that have been placed across trails are to stop 4x4s.

Shimano AM40s are very good. Not as mentally grippy as 5.10, but still grippy enough. Slimmer, so you can move your feet around more on the pedals. You also get a 'sole stiffener' which you can use to tune the feel of the shoe on the pedal if you want. You get wet feet with all shoes, but these dry quicker than 5.10s.

Both good helmets. I've got both.

Athlon is an xc helmet, feels lighter and is very well vented.

Xen feels very comfy, you might even say plush. It's warmer as the venting is different. More head protection.

Take your pick depending on the riding you do and the level of venting you want.
