1 minute course (which will be 30secs for the really fast).

Short push up means you get more runs in your practice day and more time on the bike, which is nice. This is why Wharncliffe and Gisburn Forest are so good. You just don’t need uplift and you get more chance to work out your lines when it’s a short run.

For it to have appeal to big bikes I think you’d need to look at an alternative to the red descent, or add new bits to it. Shame that when you finish at the Quarry, you are still up a hill!

I think they have been dipped in acid (man) and then the raw finish, with decals is laquered.

Probably cheaper and easier to buy a Summer Season.

Anyone know how many places are left, was considering trying to persuade a few people to go but would be less fun if we didn’t all get in.

It’s still early days and lots of people I’ve spoken to are still “just thinking” about getting booked in. Get it sorted in the next week or so and you should be fine. Bookings are going out and a couple of the pre-rides are getting full.

I’ve been up in the Quarry a lot lately, riding and talking to people. There is a big buzz about the riding there and the chat about the Weekender is growing. All sorts of people are riding there and they’re starting to come from further afield.

Flat routes or get uplifted, do a descent and get picked up at the end. Lots of breaks, chocolate, encouragement and a touch of “come on you can do it.” Good bike – but you’ve got that.

Go to a trail centre and let him soak up the vibes and watch the bikes / see people doing jumps. Inspiration and aspiration 🙂 Go ride some skills areas. Build a little jump together.

This is all the kind of thing I did with Nial when he was 7 and this is him now at 11

Get’s a bit hot for long rides in warmer weather but ideal in spring / autumn / winter and for this kind of xc riding.

SinglespeedStu has used the 29er version and I seemed to remenber him saying that they were super grippy but a bit draggy for his usage.

I tried a 29er version on the front of a freak bike that I rode for a while. Seemed good to me, grippy enough, not a mud tyre (but who wants to ride in mud?), nice big volume. I had a 26″ one on the back and didn’t find it too draggy, but in Calderdale a bit of drag is no big deal, with the short climbs and steep descents. Must dig out my 26er and give it more of a go.

Throw caution to the wind and try some. At least you’ll have a different tyre to talk about.

    Questions??

The path we took up the valley towards Widdop (not by the river, not the BW up top, goes past a last house as it leaves the tree’s) looks good if heading towards the Mill, is it?

    Oh yes.

The set of very worn steps with one or two tyre marks that we walked up when we headed for Heptonstall look good as well..

    Yes again.

Having walked some lovely looking BW’s i’m confused, they all look like downhills, how do you all get back up?

Road winching. Plus lots of other bridleways coming out from different valleys. All in a clover leaf style. We don’t really do loops here.

I heard a rumour some folks even ride SS round here, can this be true, how big must their legs be??

Climbs are steep but they are generally short.

I only live over in Wilsden, think i’ve got some exploring to do!

About 20 years worth yes 🙂

Good to see people up there today. There’s such a buzz up at the quarry and all kinds of people getting out on their bikes: STW folk / supermarket bike riders / downhillers / kids…the lot.

I quite liked seeing the motor bike trials riders up there. They were dead friendly and it’s them we’ve got to thank for laying down the precedent of riding lines up there in the first place. Many other places too, like Dalby.

Really is plenty to keep you entertained for a day if you ride the loop and stop to session some of the great features. In fact I think it’s a good example of why it’s good not to just ride loops. By going over stuff and working out better lines, you progress much more than only ever having one go at a trail.

Don’t forget thr Brownbacks race series will be starting soon as well. http://www.brownbacksracing.co.uk/

I’m planning on having sections closed / diversions in place on some sections for the Classic Weekender skills days.

I’m going to go up on the Ute tomorrow to put some posters up for the skills days. Wooden posts, hammer, nails etc. Should be fun through the berms 🙂

Ed-o..could I have a go next weekend? Heading down that way, well over to Wetherby but fancy a look, see, try. I it a shop demo?

Sure thing, send me an email (click on my name on the thread to find it) and we can sort out the details. It’s not a shop demo, it’s one of two pre-production prototypes.

    Ed-O, I’m in Glasgow.

Come down and try it in Calderdale rj, after all Brant has just been all the way up to Peebles for a bike ride!

Forgot to add that the DH course is quite pedal-y so don’t go too sticky on the back.

    Brownbacks speaks sense.

For the Classic Weekender: Fast rolling, biggish volume for the dc race. I found my Continental Rubber Queens to be good. For the DH I went for a 2.5 Super Tacky High Roller on the front and a 60a 2.35 High Roller on the rear. Pinch flatting is a real possibility, so pump up the back tyre or go for dual ply sidewalls on the rear. The DH choice will be fine for the trials.

Definitely worth getting up there to practice. You can come and scope out your lines on one of the pre-rides (free when you book your race place) or just make your own way up there. I’ll be running skills sesions up there as well (see the STW online shop)

    See you there.

I really liked the look of the Shedfire/Tweak/whatever it’s called this week, right up to the point where I saw the 23″ top tube. I’m a bit of a shortarse and it’s just going to be too long in common with almost every other hardtail I’ve looked at.

I’m just 5’8″ and the top tube works for me just fine with the 50mm stem on the 16″ bike. The whole build of a bike needs taking into account when sizing, not just the tube lengths. Really you need to try it for yourself, where abouts are you rj?

We were at Wharncliffe Friday, went up to Kidland for the uplift day on Saturday and race on Sunday, and came home with slightly dusty bikes. Mud? Not a bit.

Enduro for me, as mini-reviewed in the latest issue of the mag. Comfortable, takes weight off your shoulders, unless very fully loaded. Good large volume, but will carry small loads and cinch up small.

I’ve got the 16″ Ragley, but it’s not got the proper hose / cable clips on it so you can only see this picture.

I’ll have it looking right tomorrow and will get some photos taken.

It’s a very original place with good riding. There’s enough technical sections for you to session and progress your skills on too. Here’s my take on the place in my blog.
