    or flying or spaceships :o)

    Simon,
Flying is apparantly a common theme for dreams:
    http://www.dream2live.com/Dream_flying.php

The fact that I don't have these dreams any more is a bit of a downer when you consider the suggested meaning.
Its about the only recurring dream I can remember; controlling climb, direction, etc of the flight.
Psychiatrists would have a field day.

How would you define stupid…we have all done stupid things. Even very clever people can be stupid so stupidity is not necessarily a measure of intellligence

or to quote Forrest Gump "Momma says stupid is as stupid does"

A quick google of "fahrrad mieten Karlsruhe" brought this up…
    http://www.outdoorschule-achim-kleist.de/Fahrradverleih/Preisueberblick.htm

Looks like you're into about 75 euros for the duration.
I'd suggest ringing 'em. Even if your German is not up to much, chances are you'll get someone speaking better English than most of us.

    Not unusual.
My last order was split into three packages.
First two arrived a day apart (same things in both packs so must have split purely for packaging convenience)
Third pack has not arrived yet (mains adapters which were on back order)

    Don't fret. They'll turn up.

Thanks guys. That's plenty clear enough.
I'd always measured new chains against the old ones, rather than as you'd described. Habit I guess – It never occured to me to do it any other way.

    Cheers.

Roger rebuilt one of my wheels recently and suggested I hang around and watch if I wanted.

Struck me as more of an artist/musician than a technology guy. What he built up audibly was spot-on by the jigs. He then proceded to demonstrate three different tension gauges, to show that they never agree anyway!

I was sufficiently impressed to forget any further ideas about building my own. He gets my trade henceforth.

Somebody must have an idea even if they havn't tried it.

Your options if not changing the std reflector would limited to:

    1. grind the front edge of the reflector away a bit

    2. take the orange peel reflector surface off with a cutting paste or
    similar.

Personally I wouldn't recommend either of the above. Its pure guesswork with no guarantee you'll like the end result; you will probably end up with less light on the ground and obviously neither would be recoverable.

    3. replace lens with one that would defract light to give more flood.
Easily recovered if you don't like. No lens recomendations to offer you though.

You'll notice a concensus forming here.
The guys who have been out there for any prolonged period are all in the winter tyres camp. I'd add myself to that list.
I lived in Munich for 3 years and never needed to fit chains to get me to the resorts but would definately recommend winter tyres.
As someone said earlier, you should be able to find a local garage who will store the summer ones for you then swap over again in the spring.
Plan B – why not buy some cheap steel rims for the winter tyres?

The top of Snowdon on Saturday was a relative scorcher in comaprison to Simons piccies of Sunday!

Next you'll be telling us that Matt was suffering from heat exhaustion and his shortened day out was nothing to do with the previous night's tipple.

    3) I think it's easily compressible as it probably liquifies under a little pressure

Shame on you Simon, didn't they teach you anything at school?
CO2 does not liquify (at all).
It transitions from gas directly to solid and vice versa, without existing in a liquid state (sublimation).

U.K Breakdown Cover for only £59.99!

£37 quid for you and spouse, both cars.
Only thing to watch is that this is an insurance policy (rather than a recovery firm) so you pay the recovery firm on your credit card and autoaid repay you.
Used 'em for the last 4 or 5 years. Never a problem. Cheque always received before had to pay credit card.
If you need European cover too, for more than a single trip per year, then ADAC (as previously recommended) would be cheaper.

Chainring eating, bike breaking, multiple puncture, rock slab fest.

I've considered changing to a double and bash, and every time I do Gisburn I find that I'm a little bit nearer to owning one.

I've spoken to Roger and will be paying him a visit tomorrow morning.
He told me his bread and butter work is mainly in shifting the factory Hope Hoops these days but he's happy to do work for locals.

I was going to say "It's waymarked", but for a fact I never saw any as I was just following the lights

IIRC about the only bit that's not waymarked is the muddy singletrack that we took.

If I've read you right, you get the green light on the charger before you stick it in the mains. I don't think that's a fault.
What happens when you apply the mains power? Charger LED should change colour at this point and should revert to green again when charging complete.

In the same quandry here, with the same restriction on supplier.

I believe you can also get Halfrauds to source other bikes that aren't within their normal ranges but you have to pay RRP for 'em.

Tempted to get the road bike myself.
What's the general concensus on 'em?

    Cheers

    6'3" here, and long limbs.
    Went for a large.
Wasn't quite happy with the riding position with the standard 350mm seat post at minimum insertion, so bought a 400mm one which I run at 2 to 3 cm above the min mark. Now very happy thankyou.

Yep, agreed they look small but the angle of the seat tube ensures you get enough length in the cockpit corresponding to the height.
My other bike's a 21" rockhopper so I was previously quite used to a stretched out gate of a thing.
Despite initial misgivings (mainly what my eyes were telling me) I'm now pretty much sold that I made the right decision on sizing.

I've ridden this BOAT from Strata Florida earlier this year:
    http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=280942&y=260685&z=120&sv=280942,260685&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=577&ax=280942&ay=260685&lm=0

There's a bridleway from just south of this point, back over the tops to the head of Caban Coch reservoir but I've never ridden it.

The track from Strata Florida to the streetmap position is all rideable but gets some hammer from the 4×4 brigade.
I was planning to extend over to Rhayader but haven't tried it yet, so I'd be interested to know how you go on and what the tops are like.

    Cheers

Anyone remember the old witches window in New Church – you could put a coin in the slot and the 3 witches inside would wobble about driven by clock work

Yep, I lived in the next house up the road as a kid.
Christ that seemed like an evil place to live when you were a kid totally reliant on a bike to get everywhere. (Why did my mum & dad have to buy a house on to of a 1000' hill ?)

…and 30 years later here I am doing just that for enjoyment. Funny old world, ain't it.

Besides the obvious inclusion of a head mount, the only difference I can see is in the rating of the chargers (from pics on DX site).
The helmet mount one is 1000 mA and the bar mount is 1800mA.
Not an issue in practice – just takes longer to charge.

I can't see how anyone could claim the same lumen output from the same cree emitter without putting the same current into it (for a given voltage) so I'd take the quoted information about the two different regulated currents with a pinch of salt. It will be the same lamp unit.

I've got one of the bar mounts and was thinking about how to mount another one on my lid before buying a second. Problem now solved for me I think.
    I'll be ordering tonight.

As this problem has only recently effected you, it must be a recent WGA update that's triggered it. You can always roll-back your machine to a date that predates the WGA patch, assuming you've first got all stuff after that date backed-up elsewhere.
Suggest you review what's going to be installed by automatic updates before you downlaod it, and mark all the WGA patches as "do not install".

I think Retro83 has summed it up perfectly from my point of view.
I spent the first month worrying if I'd made a mistake but now I've bannished those thoughts and just enjoy riding what is a fantastic bike, especially for the money.
No cracks to report (09 Large UK) but still can't stop checking every now and then.
Descents just seem to be getting shorter though :P

Kill everything! Taliban, civilians, dogs, everything.

I saw some footage from an A10 head-up-display a while back: half a dozen guys walking along a road at night with (probably) guns over their shoulders and a dog tagging along. The footage then shows some vibration and simultaneously you can see the magazine load figures from the 30mm cannon tumbling rapidly!!!
This is all from a range of a couple of miles, so there's a brief pause, then the dog makes a sharp exit miliseconds before the rounds arrive !!!
The impact is pretty graphic in infra red (or whatever) as you get to see the warm bits spread around.
Impersonal business it's become, killing people that is (but looked clinically effective).

Another vote for TK Maxx here.
Had two or three from there Adidas/Surfanic/etc. So long as they've got good wicking properties, they'll do the job fine.
As ever, the drawback is that there's no surity of having just what you want in stock. Always worth a look though.

I've used the myibay sniper for a while. All the stuff robdob lists as chargable extras are free basic functionality with myibay iirc.
It also has a firefox ad-in that integrates really well. Never had any problem. Highly recommended.

I gotta support you on this one JulianA.

We need to start something like they've got in Munich.
    http://www.muenchner-blade-night.de
I lived there for a few years and every Monday night in Summer we'd join in with about 10,000 others and do a tour of the city, usually 10 miles or so. The police even operated a rolling roadblock to close the streets and allow everyone through.
…and yes it always ended at a beergarden :o)
Great atmosphere – I really miss it !

I had a problem with elevations not working. Turned out to be a numpty error on my part. I'd modified the names of some of the map files, ignorant of the fact that the associated elevation data file must have exactly the same name (apart from the file extension obviously).
Easily rectified by renaming one or t'other.

Sounds unrelated to be honest, but maybe worth checking.

AVG free edition will probably do most people fine. Not sure what memory it takes up but never had a problem with it.

I've got "AVG" for the anti-vrus; "zone alarm" for the firewall and run Firefox with the "no-script" extension.
You might also like to supplement this with "Ad-aware" and "Spy-bot search and destroy". Google each for more info.

Its all free stuff too :-)

I was asked to go out there for a 3 week stint about ten years ago (with a view to would I like to take an upcoming job). This was shortly after the birth of my daughter.
I went. It was an experience. I came back wiser for having done it. I made a few quid in the process.
Did I want to go out there (unaccompanied) for a year or two?
    NO thanks!!

Do it for the experience. When you've tried it you'll be able to make informed choices further down the line.

Managed to drag my teenage son (reasonably competent) and his mate (less so) round the Wall a couple of weeks ago. His mate was riding a heavy bike with v-brakes and pretty inadequate forks but he made it round without any issues.
My original plan was to do W2 with 'em but it became clear on the long ascent that son's mate was not up to it, so we cut it short and just did the Wall. Kids eh – no stamina!
There's nothing at all on the Wall to upset beginners – you just end up doing it at a very leisurely pace.

    Have fun.
