I stopped going when they decided to stop serving the meatballs with pasta. I don’t want them with mash, I want them with pasta!!! :(
Ecky-ThumpFree MemberI wanted a second-hand GTD but the way the market is going, I dont want to be in the situation where I can’t sell it on
Personal view… I suspect the value of second hand diesels may even start to attract a premium, as a result of the supply becoming restricted.
Ecky-ThumpFree Member…which reminds me, I must remember to ask my mum for her parkin recipe.
Ecky-ThumpFree MemberWe had an 02 diesel Yaris for a good few years.
Only got rid because it was a 2 door model, which wasn’t ideal with child seats etc.
Bought it at 18 months old with 50k on it. Put another 80k on it without a hiccup.Loved the car. £20 Tax and cheap to insure.
In the days when Quidco used to pay good amounts of cashback on new insurance policies, we were sometimes getting almost the full premium back as cashback!Ecky-ThumpFree Memberwesutf1 – Member

Thanks for that link wesutf1.
It tells me that as of 16:20 on 18/10…

Wish I’d gone to zee Germans.Ecky-ThumpFree MemberYou’re correct Ichabod, the remote bleed has nothing to do with it. Send it back under warranty.
Ecky-ThumpFree MemberI agree with what tthew recommended. Bundled bank account.
Nationwide flexplus as a joint account gives us full European breakdown for both cars; worldwide family travel insurance inc Winter sports; Up to 5 phones insured and pays 3% on first 2.5k
Can’t buy that lot for the £13 they charge monthly.Ecky-ThumpFree MemberModel 611
140mm width for me.
Standard (not the fancy active one with the inserts)I did a self-measure. i.e. sat on a sheet of paper on a soft surface and measure the impressions left.
First one I had came as standard build on a Liteville. Liked it so much that I bought again.
I’ve had both carbon railed and Ti railed ones. I’ve broken the rails on both… but (for context) I’ve also broken every saddle that I’d had before them too, so this is not a criticism. All were replaced without quibbling. The 10 year warranty is fantastic.
Ecky-ThumpFree MemberI’ve got the SQ Labs saddles on every bike.
Most comfortable saddles I’ve tried. Highly recommended.Ecky-ThumpFree MemberA good few years ago now, my parents and another family with whom they were friends, decided to swap houses with a cash adjustment one way.
They went to the solicitor who asked them what completion date they were looking for. They said something like “Friday next week”.It can be done!
They just need a hefty boot applied, frequently.Ecky-ThumpFree MemberIs it me, or are private sales becoming rare these days.
Yep. My theory is that as most people seem desperate for the latest number plate they buy new on PCP then hand it back at the end of the term.
All those cars end up going to auction and being bought by ‘dealers’ who wash them and advertise them with £1000 profit.Yeah, that’s what I’m inclined to attribute it to.
Ecky-ThumpFree MemberIs it me, or are private sales becoming rare these days.
Just bought a 64 plate Golf DSG Tdi for the Mrs and could I find anything worth buying private? – could I heck. Also finding that private sellers are increasingly wanting as much as the dealers!
Ecky-ThumpFree MemberWe always use that car park at Water Park that Lowey linked to.
That way you’re finishing on Parkamoor :DEcky-ThumpFree MemberRode Hebden on Wednesday night. The trails are holding up well enough and not suffering too much from the rain BUT… The foliage is still a bit dense and the Summer’s carpet of green slime is still coating much of the rocky stuff. Needs a month or so and a good scouring before it’s back to form.
Saturday will be Lakes for me. Maybe some exploratory stuff around Bowfell if the visibility is Good, otherwise probably a standard loop like Rossett, Grains Gill, Stake Pass.
Ecky-ThumpFree MemberArmy goretex trousers, cut down to knee length, have been my standard wet weather kit for years.
No pockets, no patches or zips, so they stay waterproof until you wear through the membrane.Ecky-ThumpFree MemberI just use a 5 litre garden sprayer with the wand removed, molgrips pinching the hose to hold the air back, then push the hose over the valve, and undo the molgrips. Never fails.
That’s exactly what I do too.
Do you seal up the blow off valve first?
No, that’s the indication that you’ve pumped it up sufficiently.
Ecky-ThumpFree MemberAndy,
I’ve got E4s on three bikes, all with the same Hope 203/180 rotor combination.
They don’t all feel identical.
Two are great but the third always seems a bit squishy on the rear, between rotor contact and full power.
Centred carefully and all pistons moving freely but it still feels like it needs a bleed. I’ve flushed it through with new fluid and still got the same squish in the lever.
To be honest, I’d probably not notice if it was my only one… but it’s noticeable when compared to the other two identical set-ups.
Next course of action will likely be a further bleed but with calliper off the bike to tease out any air from potential trap-spots.Ecky-ThumpFree MemberWell, judging by the frequency of the messages I get that read “Dad, pls can I borrow your P7 tomorrow? Going with mates to CyB/Gisburn/etc”, I guess there are at least a few 20-somethings still interested.
Ecky-ThumpFree MemberAll as above.
I’d not recommend driving whilst there though.
Everything North of Sorrento = train
Everything South around Amalfi cost = boatEcky-ThumpFree Memberwhy have you changed for longer stem?
“not the best for most other riding”
It’s always going to be a compromise.
I’d be concentrating on optimising it for the bits you enjoy the most.Ecky-ThumpFree MemberI’ve never been to Glentress!
There, I’ve admitted it. I must surely be alone in this respect amongst mountainbikers.Ecky-ThumpFree MemberLowey, you’re doing Loft Beck to Honister the wrong way. ;-)
Loft Beck as a descent is “interesting”. :twisted:Ecky-ThumpFree MemberRichard,
Keswick to Buttermere via Watendlath = just follow Borrowdale Bash route as far as Seatoller, then up Honister and down WharnscaleButtermere to Keswick = up Sail Beck and down Rigg Beck
or up Robinson and down Scope End
Skiddaw doesn’t really “fit” into the route easily but you could add it in as an extra loop, up the main track and down scree slope onto Ullock Pike.Ecky-ThumpFree MemberWhere are they breaking?
(as in where on the cable, not which alpine descent)A spare gear cable should be in your pack anyway. All the time, not just for big days out.
Ecky-ThumpFree Memberhammerite, thanks for the recommendations.
We know Skiwelt well but really wouldn’t risk it there early season if booking ahead.
Yes, we’ve done Ski Armade area early in the season before and been lucky like you. It’s a thought.
Not done Saalback/Hinterglemm – will check it out. Thanks for that.Ecky-ThumpFree MemberDon’t fret – the Italian chef that taught me did the same
Phew!
Ecky-ThumpFree MemberOMG! I’ve been doing it wrong all these years!
I’ve only ever put the while stuff in on the final layer.Ecky-ThumpFree MemberAbout the only scheduling that will suit the whole family this year is Christmas week, 23rd to 30th. (group of 5)
Any recommendations for resorts and/or operators?
We normally prefer Austria and Italy to France, but I appreciate that going this early might necessitate looking at Val Thorens/Alpe d’Huez/Tignes too.Cervinia offerings seem quite limited.
The Austrian glacier resorts are not typically linked to massive areas, so not a good match for the twin requirements of snow-sure and extensive.Would you risk Ischgl or St Anton this early in season?
Ecky-ThumpFree MemberAndy,
This is on the 301 I assume.
You did a full frame bearing-set change not so long ago didn’t you, so it’s unlikely to be that I’d have thought.Yeah, wheel bearings is the likely suspect.
Whilst you can see/feel movement at the rim, I’ve found the best indicator to be by observing the disc for movement between the pads.
If the disc wobbles between the pads then I’d be changing the wheel bearings, whereas if the disc remains central to the pads whilst you wobble the rim, then you’re issue is probably on the frame.Going against the flow a bit here but when I was running Pro2evos I always found the cheap ebay bearings to last just as long as Hope originals.
The sealing is the vulnerability of any bearing low down on a bike IMHO. I ran marine grease in mine. Bit more resistance but lasted much better.Ecky-ThumpFree MemberMy shortlist was:
27.5
Stanton Switchback
P7
Chromag wideangle
Shan
Blue Pig29
Chromag Rootdown
Last FastforwardWould have gone for the Wideangle if there had been any stock anywhere. None due until about Oct when I enquired.
So I went for a P7. Happy with it.Ecky-ThumpFree MemberSo, based on this thread, just bought some OKO. Will give it a try.
Stans has been OK for me but leaks a little to much through Schwalbe SG sidewalls so needs constant top-ups.
Caffe Latex has been OK-ish, no better, maybe a little more prone to drying out prematurely IME.Ecky-ThumpFree Memberinsurance4carhire
I’ve used these and have claimed. Painless and quick. Think I was actually paid out before the credit card payment was taken.
Ecky-ThumpFree MemberMy Reverb gives up about 2-3mm when I sit on it, whether fully extended or not… Is This normal?
Is this fairly “typical”? – Yes
Is it correct operation? – No, It’s defective.
I’ve warrantied reverbs at <5mm. If yours is still under warranty, I’d be going down that route.
@deadkenny – No, a new top cap/bushing won’t do anything for the sag.
It’ll address any for/aft or side-to-side play only.Ecky-ThumpFree MemberDone a few different variants of this recently.
Starting at Braithwaite and going over Coledale Hause and Whiteless Pike is best.
Don’t be tempted to take Gasgale Gill instead of Whiteless as it’s taken a lot of damage in the last big storms and much has been washed away. Gasgale no longer flows and you’re forced to take unridable lose shale climbs to detour around.Up the front of Red Pike (Sourmilk Gill) is a brutal carry.
The traverse of the High Stile/High Crag ridge is mostly ridable but very stop/start obstacle-hopping in places and not that interesting apart from the views. There’s one super-steep stepped descent towards the end of the ridge that is technically challenging but ultimately not worth the long climb up Red Pike to get to it IMHO.
The descent back down Scarth Gap to Buttermere, which you’d have come up when doing 4 passes route, is ridable but not really as much fun as you’d expect in the top half. Tough going but a bit underwhelming. If doing Red Pike, I prefer to go up via Scale Force/Scale Beck and come back down Sourmilk Gill. Scale Force is still a carry but saves you doing Red Pike as an out-&-back. I’ve done that route twice in the last year, once on a full sus in the dry and once on a hardtail in the wet.
Dry & full sus = great brutal tech descent.
Wet & hardtail = almost unridable in places, felt like I’d taken a knife to a gunfight.Recommended return leg from Buttermere to Braithwaite = up Sale Beck and down Rigg Beck. Optional detour over Causey Pike instead of descending Rigg Beck.
Even without Causey Pike, it’s a big day out. 6000 feet in 20 miles.
Ecky-ThumpFree Memberexpensive taste in stems and bars
To be fair, there wasn’t much thought went into the initial purchase, as it was what came with the bike, but I was sufficiently impressed with the Syntace stuff to buy some more for later builds.
Ecky-ThumpFree MemberBoil it; then throw the water away.
Boil it again; then throw the water away.
Boil it again; then throw the water away.
Boil it again; then throw the water away.
Boil it again; then throw the POLENTA away and use the water for a pot noodle instead.Ecky-ThumpFree Membera bit of a theme going on here, or maybe I just lack imagination:
601 = Syntace Megaforce 2 30mm stem; Syntace Vector carbon 780mm bars 20mm rise, 8deg backsweep
301 = Syntace Megaforce 2 30mm stem; Syntace Vector carbon 760mm bars 10mm rise, 8deg backsweep (it’s just a bit lower to accommodate for 29er on the front)
P7 = Syntace Megaforce 2 30mm stem, Syntace Vector carbon 780mm bars 20mm rise, 8deg backsweep
Ecky-ThumpFree MemberPaul’s a good lad. He’s away in the Dolomites at the moment but might be back by then. Worth dropping him a line:
