My daughter is negotiating with her grandmother (my mum) to inherit the Kenwood Chef.
It’s older than I am (so at least as old as Lady Gresley’s) and still going strong.

    closetroadie,
I’m splashing out on a Syntace W35 MX rim.

    https://www.syntace.com/index.cfm?pid=3&pk=2412

Cheers ferrit, I’d already seen that thread.
I can see there’s plenty of room with a 26″ wheel. Just wondering how much less there would be if I went for a 650B rear.
I’ll not be able to see easygirl’s pics until I get home. I’ll take a look then and see if that gets me any nearer a decision.
(Front will be the same 650B Syntace W35 with a 160mm Pike)

I got my Mrs one of those a couple of years ago now.
It’s been a good little bike and is more than enough for what she likes to ride, even with the v-brakes.

I’ve had a few pairs from http://www.spex4less.com/%5B/url%5D over the years.
They’ve always been fine to deal with and repaired one set that broke after over a year, free of charge.

I’m considering selling my 20″ 2011 Five frame soon. It’ll be going back to Orange for a paint job very shortly (it’s just begun to show a problem with paint lifting on an area of the swingarm, which the’ve agreed to sort with a heavily discounted paint job).
I could maybe get a custom colour done if anyone’s interested.

If you’re local, it’s always worth dropping in at the factory in Nelson, as they probably still sell the seconds at decent reductions.

A couple of years ago I bought panniers for a C2C trip from the factory shop. They knocked 50% off for a bit or reflective patch being on upside down 😀

Arabba looks interesting. Passed through there a few times when doing the Sella Ronda with Family.
Only thing that puts me off slightly from staying in the area is the lift queues that we’ve always encountered on the Sella Ronda. Do you escape that once you get off the SR?

Lads’ trip booked for mid Jan. Flight to Munich, then drive down to somewhere Kitz’-ish area.

Family trip booked for Feb half term. Flight to Munich again, then drive over the Brenner to Kronplatz.
    😀

Nope, that’s not right. Get ’em back to Windwave under warranty.
I’ve got a set on my Patriot and don’t have that problem. They are a brilliant fork IMHO.

Does anyone think its actually any better than the normal instant stuff

    No

What response did you possibly hope to get other than this, when asking that question, about instant coffee, on here. 🙄

I didn’t know the numbers on runways were basically the orientation to the nearest 10 degrees, so runway 22 is aligned at 220 degrees on the compass.

So is it labelled as “runway 4” at the other end?

A riding buddy has just put his Lynskey Ridgeline 26 Ti up for sale.
It’s almost brand new. He’s had it for a couple of months and ridden it only a couple of times and now declared it’s “too XC”.
I’ll ping him a link to this thread tonight.

I bought my Five frame only and components have been transplanted from other bikes although I do have receipts for most things

Just like mine, I’ve got a few key receipts but a lot of it is second hand off the classifieds too.

I guess with all things brand new it would be in the region of £4k

Yep, sounds reasonable but you might be surprised, mine came out more than that.

always wondered whether they’d weasel out of it somehow based on that

In the event of a claim they will ask you for some proof. Pictures and a list of parts plus costs would be OK but receipts would be better.

or try and give me a Halfords voucher or something

so you’ve got to ask them to confirm how they would settle any claim.
Direct Line Select and NFU both confirmed that it would be a cash payment to me.

Just finished ’em with final two episodes last night.

Best thing for me is how the characters develop and change. Subtle evolution throughout, starting with something you can relate to and eventually turning into… well you’ll have to watch and see.

    What to watch next though?
As I’ve only seen series 3 of The Killing, I think I’ll have to go back and try the previous two series.

Another vote here for Direct Line SELECT offering the best deal at the moment.

Previously with M&S on old Ts&Cs.
Tried NFU mutual but they won’t do new for old over two years old.
Despite intially quoting a higher premium than NFU, when pushed to pricematch DL Select, they actually came in with a quote about £80 below the price match figure.

Yes it’s a £10k limit for each single item (no need to identify/list), worldwide.

I’ve often done about 15 miles (only) and 1600m of descents yet not been more than 3 miles from the centre of Hebden at any point during the ride.
Seriously, not just a glib comment, you just need to get a map and ride all the little dotted lines on the side of the valley. The steeper, the better. They’re all good. 😉

If traction is what’s failing first, then you’ll get up more stuff seated.
I find that the only scenario requiring standing climbing is to get over technical obstacles.
But then, I’m a crap climber anyway. Most likely I’ll be off and pushing.

2007 = kinked top tube introduced
    2009 = slacker head angle
2010 = (I think)cable guides on downtube were offset to throw the cables out at an angle to give cleaner cable run and reduce rubbing.
    2011 = 30.9 seat tube

I must have dodgy scales or something!
… ‘cos my 20″ Five comes in at about 34-35lbs
Flow EX, tubeless, Minions DP rear/SP front
    44RC3ti fork
    CCDB coil
    Mainly XT kit
2×9 with a DRS chain device
    Reverb & std Bel-air
    V-one bars and stem.

    Did you get sorted Marcus?
I’d also concur with Tom (Tomaso) re the cheap superstar 10mm oversize QR thingy. That’s what I have on the Five in a Pro2 bolt-through.

Previously had it on a Meta 5 and it stiffened that up no-end, so swapped it onto the Five from day-one.

    4ft drop to flat, yes.
Was happily dropping multiple 3ft flights of steps last night in the dark and rain on a 100mm XC hardtail.

6ft doubles, yes BUT I really don’t like doubles. Those big nasty doubles at Antur Stiniog jumped up and bit me. But I’m guessing they’re maybe getting on for 15-20ft. Way too big for me. (Still undergoing physio on torn rotator-cuff).

Just done my renewal of home insurance.
NFU Mutual, M&S & Direct Line Select were the three contenders.

NFU mutual will include bikes but will want to cost the specific cover you require under the “personal belongings” part of the policy.
NB they only cover up to 2 years old on a new-for-old replacement basis, beyond that you have to estimate on a second-hand replacement basis as they won’t be giving you new-for-old

M&S USED TO include bikes up to £5k each without having to specify. They no longer do, even if you are renewing, it is now on the revised Tc&Cs which have a limit of something like £2K I think. To get cover above that value you have to list the bikes individually. This made them too expensive for me (12k in 3 bikes)

Direct Line SELECT was best option for me. They offer £100k of contents cover (no, I don’t own that much stuff) but importantly they cover ANY item, ANYWHERE in the world, new-for-old, up to £10k each item, without the need to specify it. They were also comparable to NFU on price so I asked them to beat the NFU price, which they did.
NB, this is “SELECT”, which is different to Direct Line’s standard product.

Hope BB bearings will cost you more for each side than a full XT BB will.
That said, I’ve changed a few too many XT BBs so I’m giving Hope a try now.

If you don’t go i-spec, then there is another way to create more space outboard of the brakes that’s worked well for me.

You can remove the bar mounts from the shifters and swap the mounts over (left mount to right side and vice versa). This allows you to mount the shifter clamps inboard of the brakes and creates space outboard of the brakes.

There’s a strong risk that my daughter may come down with some terrible illness on the last day before Feb half term.
Always sought school’s permission in the past and it was always granted. Won’t be asking this year.

The difference on my Meta 5.5 was somewhat amazing, although the swing arms are known to be particularly flex with a QR through them.

    This was also my experience.
I’ve since changed from the Meta to a Five but have kept the SS 10mm bolt system. It’s tough as old boots and I like it.

Buy the OS map and look for dashed dotted green lines.

    😆

On a more helpful note, my advice would be to stick to the steep valley side routes around Hebden & Hep’. The moorland routes will have degenerated to slop by now but the valley sides drain quickly.

We paid a visit on Saturday and managed 2500ft of cheeky descents in about 8 miles total.
