IME Rab stuff is no where near as good quality as it used to be, say 5-10 years ago

Agreed, there’s a very noticeable difference in quality between the other half’s Rab summit which is about 5 years old and mine which is just a year old

My Mum used to read me the story of Little Suck a Thumb

One day, Mamma said, “Conrad dear, I must go out and leave you here. But mind now, Conrad, what I say, Don’t suck your thumb while I’m away. The great tall tailor always comes To little boys that suck their thumbs. And ere they dream what he’s about He takes his great sharp scissors And cuts their thumbs clean off, – and then You know, they never grow again.”

Mamma had scarcely turn’d her back, The thumb was in, alack! alack!
The door flew open, in he ran, The great, long, red-legged scissorman. Oh! children, see! the tailor’s come And caught our little Suck-a-Thumb. Snip! Snap! Snip! the scissors go; And Conrad cries out – Oh! Oh! Oh! Snip! Snap! Snip! They go so fast; That both his thumbs are off at last.

Mamma comes home; there Conrad stands, And looks quite sad, and shows his hands;- “Ah!” said Mamma “I knew he’d come To naughty little Suck-a-Thumb.”

It didn’t work by the way, although I gave up of my own accord around age 7

I bike to work, although expensive my bike cost about the same as paying for a bus to work for a year, so really my bike doesn’t cost me anything. In 18 months i’ve had one new chain (and that was only coz the 2 month old one had snapped). Biking doesn’t have to be expensive, people tell themselves they ‘need’ stuff to justify buying bike bits all the time, but mostly it’s wants not needs.

I’d download as gpx then use GPX2CRS before uploading them to the Garmin

I realise now I was far to enthusiastic when starting biking again.

Should have held back a bit, and got extra encouragement in the form of a nice bike and nice biking kit instead of buying my own!

When i lived in the US the main thing was pricing stuff as $0.99 or similar then adding tax on at the till which means you’ve got to pay $1.04 or some similar stupid amount

If the doctor thinks it’s ok and you want to go then i’d go. I’ve never avoided swimming because of ear problems, even after i’d had grommets inserted.

It’s honestly never crossed your mind to take your shoes off at the door?

You’ve never got so muddy that you leave muddy footprints even after you’ve taken your shoes and socks off? :-)

    Like this?

You need a google account, then there’s an option called my maps and you can put a marker wherever you want, then use the normal link option

    I’d recommend Montserrat

Less than an hour away from Barcelona and accessible by public transport if you don’t have a car

I certainly couldn’t browse this forum and write answers like this on the Nokia, and definitly not on the awful XDA Mini that preceded it

I can browse this forum on my Nokia 6230i, it’s definitely possible on an N95

The met parachute isn’t sold as a replacement for a full face helmet, more a general use helmet with a bit of extra protection and in that respect is fine. Other half is missing six teeth from a bicycle accident, he’s got a proper full face for downhill stuff, and the met for more general xc riding. It serves its purpose

Have stayed at Llyn Rhys campsite. Reasonably nice, easy riding distance to Llandegla, has braziers for open fires, couple of pubs within walking distance

You need the address that starts http://farm4.static.flickr.com/

to put between the img tags

If the all sizes options isn’t there, you can right click and go to properties (or copy image location in Firefox) to find this out.

Technically you should do this though

I’ve had a few riders just ask us to keep talking as we pass, the horse then recognises you as a human and no problem. Dumb animals!

Got into trouble with a friend when I was discussing something and said you’d have to drive like a muppet to wear tyres out in a year/12,000 miles. Guess who’d just had their tyres changed on their one year old car?!

I got 40,000 miles out of my last set of tyres.

But that’s not even accurate, only certain combinations of clothing can be selected, so once a skirt/trouser choice has been made, not all top options are available and once and outfit has been chosen then you can’t still choose from all shoe options! It needs a fancier diagram to make sense!

You can get French IGN maps for Memory Map, see http://www.memory-map.co.uk/maps_france_onland_top25.htm

Not sure if they’ll cover the bits of Italy and Switzerland though.

You can draw a route in Google Earth and convert from kml/kmz to gpx, but not sure if there’ll be the level of detail needed to plot accurately.

MemoryMap (or similar) is the best at mapping as it uses OS maps as its base. However, the maps aren’t directly compatible with Garmin GPS machines

Not true, you can import the file from a Garmin 205 (and i presume other garmins) directly into Memory Map using the Import track option.

If all you want to do is view your track over OS mapping you can do that with no software at all on the internet, just need to get it into gpx format.

The Trent Lock route isn’t completely the one in the book, we lost a bridleway across a field and ended up stuck and having to retrace steps as it started to get dark, only one set of lights between us so we ended up going on the road rather than trying to find the right route. I can put up a link to the complete route if you like?

It’s ok, but nothing particularly great, a ride to do when you want to get out somewhere without getting in the car rather than anything else.

Never really been out round west Nottingham, used to live in Carlton and now we’re further North so local wanders tend to be round those areas.

FunkyNick: so what ‘legal good bits’ would you recommend? see if i can work them into next local ride i do

Got the book, can be a bit hit and miss, it’s definitely got some bits where they’re actually directing you across footpaths.

The problem with the area round Notts is even if it’s a bridleway, there’s no guarantee it’s rideable, had to carry my bike after the clay mud has made even pushing impossible on more than one occasion. The farmers like to plough through a lot of them too, can make following one across a large field interesting.

The above routes are all from that book i think

Never had a problem with the 205 losing signal, even in quite heavily forested areas. Heaps better than an older garmin GPS we had in that respect.

The grid ref thing isn’t a problem for me because generally have an OS map printed off from memory map which allows you to overlay lat/lon grid lines so a lat/lon reference is enough.

Generally use it for tracking routes rather than navigation, but been fine to follow a route the few times we’ve uploaded crs tracks to it.

Porridge is something that I keep trying to like but I just can’t

It feels like it sits in my stomach all day, so yes it keeps me full all day, but in an uncomfortably full and still hungry kind of way.

Forcing myself to eat porridge has also coincided with losing a stone in 4 weeks (although that may have had something more to do with walking 15 miles a day)
