Which direction are you doing IK/Loughrigg?

Up and over the fell from ambleside to skelwith then looping round the east of IK to descend S to N and then descending the terrace W to E

I prefer that format when I see it, easier to read and less repetitive. Easier to tailor to a specific job spec as well, i.e. you can change the order of the skills or emphasis certain ones more easily than going through and editing for every single role.

Thanks all, reassuring that everyone seems to think the same! I already had a fairly big day out on it after I noticed the chip and it didn’t explode, so I’ll just zip tie an old tyre over it and ride on :)

Interesting that you think there is metal underneath.

Yeah, would be strange but given the colour that’s what it looks like. There are bolt holes for the bottle cage and frame protector on the top / bottom of the tube in that area so might be related to those.

its a paint / lacquer chip , so unless the frame is made of bone china keep calm & carry on

That’s kind of my guess too – whatever has chipped off is only about the thickness of a fingernail so I can’t see it being structurally critical. Plus I’d have expected to see bits of carbon weave poking out if it was the actual carbon that was damaged.

I had a similar dilemma when getting the mens version last year – based on height (170 cm) I should have been on the medium but my short inside leg resulted in a recommendation for the small. Similar to you, nudging the inside leg up by 1 cm resulted in the medium being recommended so I ended up going for the medium as it was in stock and there was a 6-8 week wait for the small. I struggled a wee bit with maintaining contact with the pedal at the bottom of the stroke, which may or may not have contributed to me tearing a muscle (no issues in ~4 years on the old bike and it went after ~5 rides on the new one :/). However, swapping the 175 mm cranks out for 170 mm ones sorted the issue (though 165 mm would have been better tbh, just couldn’t find them anywhere…) and the bike itself is great!

TLDR – you’ll probably be fine on the medium but you might need to get shorter cranks.

You don’t – she won’t change because you’ve told her to, all you’ll do is look like a dick to her.

My Father in law is obese and no amount of prompting from family (from gentle, subtle encouragement to exercise to bluntly telling him they’re worried he’s going to die because he’s fat) has changed his behaviour. A heart attack did prompt him to temporarily shift a good bit of weight, but he just ended up putting it back on again.

IMO helping people with weight loss is a bit like dealing with an addict – don’t enable them but don’t try to force them to change, the choice to change has to come from within. Once they make that decision themselves your advice/help will be far more welcome.

You should totally ask this same question on Mumsnet and see how you get on.

I believe one of their mantras is “it’s an invite, not a summons” – don’t ask me how I know that…

I’d probably want to do what you’re doing in your situation, but I’d stick around for the weekend and go if my wife really wanted me to (probably to act as a buffer against tweedleprick). However, we rarely ask the other to do something they really don’t want to do (and she knows I’m anti-social) so for me it depends on:

    (a) what’s the balance of “doing things you don’t wanna do for your partner” in your relationship? If it’s 50:50 or more in your favour you should just go.

    (b) is it worth the fallout if you don’t go?

Maybe you could negotiate a compromise, e.g. you bugger off on your bike on the Saturday and minimise Tweedleprick exposure but go along to the christening?

3 eggs, cooked quickly in a hot pan until not quite set on top. Season, toss in some ham if I have any, fold onto plate. Then drizzle some Chinese chili crispy oil (here) and some of the crunchy bits on the top. Perfect.

As scotroutes says you should be cleaning your boots, your bike and your boats if you are moving about the country let alone getting stroppy about cleaning your boots to go abroad.

My post wasn’t intended to come off as stroppy, as I said I was planning to clean them anyway but was just wondering how extreme to go with it – I spent quite a while getting 2 pairs pristine for going to Oz as I knew they’d be checked, but thought that might be overkill for this trip.

Thanks to all who answered the question ;)

Yeah, I’ve cleaned them but I got a bit anal about it for Oz and was bleaching stuff, etc. Probably overkill for Canda though…

Yeah, my guess is it’s a bit of a bully boy tactic to try and intimidate other companies from taking their staff – they probably know they’ll lose, but as a big company they’ve got a dedicated legal team so can use tactics like this at a low cost.

UPDATE: looks like the company are using the letter to get the company I’m going to specified as a direct competitor (not specified in current contract). They sent the same one to someone else who is leaving the company to go to the same place as me on her last day and, once she’d signed it, issued some document saying that she couldn’t work for the new company during the period of her nonsolicitation agreement and that they wouldn’t be providing any compensation during that period.

Pretty shitty behaviour and just underlines why I’m leaving – rather than try and address WHY people are leaving, they’re resorting to these sort of tactics. New company is sorting an employment lawyer to look into it, I suspect they’ll find it difficult to enforce as it’s a small and specialised industry so restriction of trade will presumably apply.

I was never going to sign the letter anyway, so it’ll be interesting to see if they try the same with me without it. I’ve enough buffer that I can probably manage for 6 months without working, and I’m bloody minded enough to just say ‘see you in court’ if they try it.

Thanks all, I’m not too worried about actual legal ramifications as I know about 7 or 8 people who have left the current company for the one I’ll be joining and had the same clauses in their contracts, and I’ve made sure the new company know about my non-solicitation clauses. I won’t be signing the letter though unless there’s something in it for me – however, if they offer anything it’d just make me more suspicious!

Gardening leave would have been great, my notice period is 3 months so that would have been a lot of cycling…

    Potential clients

Only if I’ve had dealings with them in the past year – we work on limited term projects, so there could be a client we’ve done a lot of work with in the past year but don’t currently have an ongoing project with IYSWIM.

Thanks all, I think I’ll just tell them I ain’t signing it 😀. No upside for me in it! I don’t intend to go poaching clients anyway but our Yankee overlords tend to get all twitchy about this kind of stuff.

Don’t they disconnect the battery when spraying the car to avoid risk of fire (aerosol spray is very flammable). Did you have to retune the radio?

No, it was still on the same station. The auto seat position thingy was also working, which makes me think it wasn’t disconnected.

Was there any welding work done as part of the repair?

I wouldn’t have thought so, it was just a small crease in the boot door and a scraped bumper.

    ebennett

Actually, I remember now that the auto car seat adjustment still had my settings when I got it from the body shop, so I’d guess they didn’t disconnect the battery.

How handy are you with a set of spanners? My first thoughts are that it sounds like either an old/clogged air filter or the MAF sensor causing the car to over-fuel. You could check the air filter easily in the dealers car park with a socket set.

I’d give it a go, but they’re a 20 min drive away so not a practical option!

it had to relearn idle speeds etc

That’s interesting, I’d hope the dealer would think to check that but you never know with them. When yours had the issue, was it doing it while driving as well or just when sitting at idle? Mine is persistent across all gears once it drops to a cruising level, i.e. if trying to maintain 30 while in 4th. Haven’t checked the windows. Might give the body shop a call and see if they disconnected the battery.

Did the garage check the engine codes? If not get a bluetooth obd2 code reader from ebay and see if the engine logs errors when the fault occurs. You can use the Torque Lite app to do this.

Yep, the body shop as well, but nothing is coming up. It’s the not knowing what’s wrong that’s really annoying me, the control freak part of me needs to plan for every eventuality so at the moment its spinning out of control a little…

sorry misread the OP. a lot of the electrics for my BMW were in the boot area though, including the battery and fuse box.

Might be a possibility, Dr. google suggests they’re in the engine and passenger side panel though. Don’t have a clue myself tbh!

If it is something clogged up, three weeks of no running / only being driven around a car park offers the opportunity for things to gunk up.

Do you have to go to main dealer for diagnostic? An independent world charge less.

Yeah, I was kind of thinking that too, especially as it’s a diesel. There weren’t many options in garages tbh, the car wasn’t safe to drive any distance IMO (had to keep dropping the clutch to prevent lurching/stalling at ~25 mph) and the dealer was just up the road from the body shop. Could possibly try and get it moved to an independent near me but probably as much hassle/cost involved in that as in leaving it at the dealer.

Real long shot but could the minor bump have damaged any of the exhaust system?

I don’t think so as the car was driving fine afterwards for several weeks, but my guess would be that – if the body shop caused it – it would be something to do with that as they’d have been doing work at that end of the car and may have done something to bugger it up.

    ebennett

hence the 3 week repair – the other parties insurers are paying for it and there’s a profit in hiring cars out during repairs.

re: engine issue. If you drove it after the bump probably not that, could be body shop have disturbed some electrics, though – guess it depends how much dismantling around the engine bay they had to do?

It was all being done through the other driver’s insurer though, so I’d have thought they would be wanting it done ASAP to minimise costs

They shouldn’t have had to touch the engine as it was the rear bumper and boot panel, so it’s a bit strange. I’m pretty annoyed that no-one said anything about it when I picked it up though, as there’s no way they could have driven it out to the front of the building without noticing it.

Please don’t call me names just because you disagree with my outlook.

TBH, I think the name calling is cos you fairly consistently come across as a **** across all the threads I’ve seen you post on. Sometimes you have a point in what you’re saying, but the way you express yourself is generally a bit ****ty. That may be the point though…

Tailor the skills to the job she’s apllying for and back up with evidence from any of the jobs.

+1 – I care more whether someone can demonstrate they have the skillset we’re looking for than where they’ve worked / for how long.

Thanks both – martinhutch, is hole in the wall the one that starts at high dale park?

Sarawak, I think I know the one you mean – if it’s the one I’m thinking of it’s a footpath and wouldn’t be worth the hassle of getting through the (multiple) gates on it.

Haven’t asked any of the LBS, would probably feel a bit cheeky doing that (especially as it’s a Canyon!). I’ll probably just go with back of the car – the frustrating thing is that my own car has tinted rear windows which would make me feel a bit safer, but I’ve got a hire car at the moment as some eejit rolled into the back of me!

That’s pretty much my back up plan martinhutch, only problem will be that we’ll have all the dog’s stuff (crate, bed, etc) in there along with the wife’s multiple bags for a 4 day trip! Should be possible with a bit of juggling though.

That’s what I thought, just didn’t want to actually call them and find out! It also makes more sense to me as a PCP renewal type thing, but I bought the car outright so maybe they’re just confused. Wouldn’t surprise me, they forgot to put it through its MOT when I 1st got it!

I think you just have to suck it up and deal with it – while to you it’s just money you don’t have to spend elsewhere, to your daughter it’s probably the thing she loves most in the world. If it’s also meaning that she’s off riding/grooming/mucking out rather than sitting on a sofa glued to her phone or getting up to the usual nonsense that bored teens get up to then I’d suggest it’s win-win.
