I'm gonna do my first this weekend too….bit worried having looked at last years results (SCX) that nearly everone are club riders, and there's not enough people doing it as a bit a laugh like i'll be doing. I'll be the one getting lapped then :?

Tangobravo's talking a pile of pish. I'm a "clipped in jeyboy" and i loved it! Managed the Darkside with 2 dabs on my old Anthenm (80mm). Saying that I did fall off the section of boardwalk on the descent to the loch (before the climb to the Darkside), oh and didn't do the gap jump thingy so he may have a point :|
The biggest issue when I did it last year was the bees….loads of the little buggers! It was bone dry too, I wouldn't even contemplate it in the wet.

What are the implications of simply closing the road and forcing everyone to park at the bottom?

What? you mean people would actually have to RIDE uphill? That's never going to catch on at GT

    Good luck with that :-)

After unsuccessfully trying to teach my gf, I ended up buying her a skills day at GT which she loved, and also bought her Brian Lopes' book, and she's been practicing wheelies and manuals in the garden!

    Couple of bits of advice…
    1. Don't take her on a epic ride that you think she can do unless she asks to do it. Please learn from my mistakes!
    2. Don't ever ride off into the distance, even if you're round the corner/enjoying a descent etc. Wait for her or ride slow for her to catch up. Or do what I do and ride behind

    My fave…and guarantees a laugh…

The groom has never had much luck on the ex girlfriend front….In fact his last girlfriend can only be described as melancholy (comedy pause). Body like a melon, face like a Collie.

Looks from the pics you made it up to Sgor Gaioth. We missed out on that. Combination of hundreds of hikers and strong winds meant we just took the descent back down…which was just fantastic. Top 5 in the UK IMO.

Kit, no route planned as yet, but my mistake it wasn't Carn An Righ, it's the first group of Monroes that are (mostly) rideable. There's a track that turns left off the LRT a few k's out of Bridge Of Tilt leading up to Can Liath (975m) then a steady ridge to Braigh Coire Chruinn (1070m) and then the last push up to Beinn A'Ghld (1129). The NE descent then brings you out at the east side of River Tilt where a river crosing is in order to descend back down the glen. I can't remember who it was off here that did the route but it did look spectacular with an awesome descent. I'll be waiting for some decent weather before tackling that one though.

a great ride IMO and fantastic scenery but what an anticlimax when you reach Glen Tilt itself. After the nice ST in your pics it all becomes as you rightly say….dull.

Someone off here last year took in the Carn an Righ group of Monroes then joined up to this anticlockwise loop which looked much more fun and it gives you a great decent (which the ride from Kenny wilsons book misses). Think i'll give that a go later this year.

If you plan to run it at night they can be noisy beggars, especially the cheap ones.I went for a Delonghi dehumidifier as it seems to be fairly quiet and works efficintly. Although I normally run the thing when i'm out of the house and all the windows are closed.

I also run the Crossmark LUST front and rear and can honestly say it's the best combo i've ever used on my Anthem (and good value for money). I can't understand why people don't think the crossmark would be suitable on the front. I also bought the Ignitor but found the 2.1 comes out much narrower than the 2.1 Crossmark or Advantage so now just keep it as a spare tyre for multi dayers.

No pics here, but did that loop couple of months back on an amazing day and what a cracker…fantastic scenery and if you're lucky you'll see the white tailed eagles up at the Coulin estate. Unfortunately mrs EMC had problems over the thousands of drainage ditches up there and took a right strop at the summit of the Coulags climb. It's incredible how that descent back into Torridon can cheer someone up though :D

I can understand why some people don't like Ae forest trails. Some of the trails don't flow….i'm refering to the new section that starts from the top of the steep climb and rejoins the old ST few hundred yards furhter on. I can't understand why the trail builders put bermed corners and small doubles up there when it's mostly a climb.

Speaking for myself though, I like the place (been twice in last month). Now that it seems forestry ops have finished the lack of diversionsmakes the trails flow. It's remote, it's hard, there's some great fast/steep descents and there's some long climbs but these very facts attract some riders whilst others will be put off (the lack of mobile phone coverage may put off some). The new section of boardwalk is excellent IMO and links up to The Edge well. Only grumble is the 'sanitised' section after the Edge as I used to like the eroded ST between the trees. And a great descent in the Omega Man/Shredder option to finish off the route. Oh, and the cafe is the best at any Stane IMO.
