I had mine sorted 3 months ago, private in Oz. It was iguinal (right side) and was a keyhole op. 1
    1 night in hospital
Lots of pain killers and a pain killing shot in the night that was as good as anything from the raving days of glory!
5-6 days off work, no driving
then back to work and at least a month of taking things steady, no lifting kids of bikes etc
Back on bike after 2 months but it was cruising local streets and then some mild road work (20km commute to work)
After 3 months was surfing and full on mtb and decent road rides.

I may have been ultra cautious but after ACL ligament repairs a few years back, i know that things take a while to heal…..give it time and dont rush back to the bike. Holiday will be ok but only if you are planning to relax

just to add some variation, my local break is freshwater, Sydney (the next beach up from Manly). Last weekend was epic, 5/6ft and offshore for most of the day. I havent surfed for three months (hernia recovery) but went out for a paddle at Collaroy. Nice to get out and got a couple so happy enough. Massive storms have come through this week and evrything is windblown. Layne Beachly is a Freshwater local….awesome surfer and very short!

had a hernia op last Thurs (1 weeks ago) and am in agony – having had a knee reconstruction several yrs ago, the hernia op has redefined pain barrier for me. No riding for a few weeks for me:-(

Ex-pat, my thoughts exactly. Moved from Bristol to Sydney 5 yrs ago with the wife. Have a 3 yr old now, sold house in Bristol and just about to put down deposit on a house 200m from Freshwater Beach. Its tough, being away from family, culturally oz is very different, it is impossible to know until you get here. Used to love MotD, forgotton all about it and follow NRL instead – Manly Sea Eagles. Never shown the slightest bit of interest in rugby league but it is massive in Sydney and i now find it quite entertaining. Any move, particularly far away will test your relationship…..be prepared for tough times but dont give up 😀

Check out Royal Oak – some great pubs and microbreweries in the area (woodward Av around 11 Mile)

I've been 3 or 4 times and when you get to know youre way around its pretty cool. There is good riding in national parks but you will need a willing guide from a local bike shop – again try Royal Oak, there is a decent LBS and you might find someone who will show you trails, if it has warmed up enough when you go.

Thanks chase, the comment about the dump made me chuckle!

Giler – things going well, off road ride time less than id like but still get to road ride a fair bit with 40k commute (2way) a few times per week.
Seeing massive attack in a couple of weeks on Sydney Opera House steps, Sam got us on Delj's guest list – bristol connection in full effect aiiightt!

Was at Manly and Freshwater Beach in Sydney from about 9am-12pm and the at Curl Curl at about 230pm-330pm – nothing happended as far as i know. They mentioned there would be some strange currents but no 'wave'. Beaches were closed and quiet for asunday but still plenty of surfers out at North Curl Curl

lol at bigdummy! a job, wife and kids = less time for hobbies, i do my best to get out on the mtb every couple of weeks, ride a roadie to work (40kms each day) and get a cheeky surf on sat or sun. I dont do too bad as far as hobbies go but am often in trouble!

I lived in St Weirdburgs, St Pauls and Montpelier for 15yrs and never had a problem w my various MTB’s and BMX stored in sheds. Moved to Sydney 3 years ago, miss the trails but not the pikies, seems like they are still causing much annoyance.

Cheers Giler, The media here are a little more optimistic and recession has not bitten that hard, mining, property and finance have taken hits but not like in the UK.

Will keep renting it out but just wanted to get shut of ther bloody thing!!
