The level of Service described above at the apple store seems way ahead of what you would get at a regular mobile phone store – impressive!

Subaru Outback? i’ve had one for 3 years and it carries plenty of bike stuff and holiday gear. The new shape is pretty ugly but is enormous, i have the previous model which is better looking but slightly smaller.

i live in Sydney, Perth is very isolated……trails are ok but do not really compare to east coast. Trail comparison to Uk would not even be worth it – quality, accessibility of trails in UK is fantastic.

Australia was not hit hard by recession and WA even less so, it is the engine room of the economy and driven entirely by export of resources to China – if you are planning on working in resources sector (or related field) you should not have any issues finding well paid work, however, it may not be based in Perth but a camp or port in a rural part of WA. Trail riding in rural WA will not be a popular pastime!!

If you worked in an American Large Corporate, in a role other than janitor etc, you would probably have heard of SOX, Sarbox, Sarbanes Oxley

It was introduced after a number of major corporate and accounting scandals including the Enron – its a common term and so are its abbrevaitions – maybe i did learn something whilst i worked for an American Multinational!

something my maths teacher didn’t lie about:

“Bright…..you have two speeds….slow and stop”

hit the nail on the head!!

brycey + 1 on the SOX compliance stuff – about once every 4 months someone has a panic and everything gets checked/sorted out etc for SOX – it is ongoing process that is meant to be built in to company systems but when an audit looms – people start getting agitated about it and all that could be heard in management mtgs was stuff to do w SOX……massive corporate yawn!

I just had three weeks off and you get the surf to yourself after 9am – its all about timing. The weekend is crazy though but crowds can be avoided if you go to the right spots ie. not manly or bondi!

I have just left an American Multinational Professional Services firm – they plan, design build and operate infrastructure all over the world. I was in the ‘plan’ part and the OP’s comments certainly ring true and some are the exact reason i have moved to a smaller boutique firm that is higher up the food chain. I was put on gardening leave as they were paranoid about what i knew and may see/hear. New job starts next week…..and i’m looking forward to it.

The Aussies are fanatical about products that a made in Aus, it seems to work as well, if you see the logo with ‘proudly made in Australia’, it makes me think that my $ are keeping someone busy and the country ticking along. Aussie Made[/url]

I’m not fanatical about buying local but its nice to know you have the choice and its easy to spot what’s been made in Austrlia

Outside of the UK, qualifications like C Eng / C Geol (or PE and PG equivalents in N America) count for an awful lot, not just in career progression, but also in terms of ability to secure contracts and to secure Professional Indemnity insurance.

My experience is UK, Aus and NZ – Aus and NZ do not seem overly fussed about quoting qualifications – you need to show evidence of them for immigration purposes and employers have asked to see them but in my collection of 2-300 business cards, not many include quali’s.

i could use the following letters after my name:

My name BA(Hons) BTP MRTPI MCIHT MPIA

but i dont as it is silly…like a few others on here i’m in planning and architecture and there is no industry standard saying what you should do. With 20 years experience in this sector, it is assumed that you know what you doing and dont need to include your quali’s on business cards, email sign off etc.

On a related note, i also dropped my title and group (Associate Director, Planning and Advisory) at work off my email sign and business card. I can now talk to potential clients at functions etc without them having a preconceived idea of my background or title – i prefer it this way.

I started to surf when i moved to Aus 7 years ago, i had one lesson to get the basics sorted. It then took a year of weekends surfing for an hour or two at a time to get to a point where i was standing and noticing real progression. After year 1 i started to get much keen and was going before work and progressed quickly. Now things are going well, every session is worth while, providing the swell is up.

I’m 39 and have been riding for 20 years, so have ‘balance’ but needed time to master balance on a board.

Its difficult but extremely rewarding – you need to put a lot of time in to get something out. If you have either skate or snow boarding skills it will help a lot.

give it a go….it the only way to find out!

as an update, i handed in my notice on monday, they had a day to think about it and now i’m on gardening leave!!
A little concerned about my client base and how they will react with others taking over….i guess i will have to wait until i am ‘out of contract’ with my current employer before i can contact them.

may not be the rich that leave the UK but the educated certainly are………i have been in Australia for the past 7 yrs having left Bristol to start a new job in planning/urban design with a multinational…..the global recession did not hit us hard and the the number of poms arriving is going through the roof.

Seems to me that those countries that are blessed with abundance of natural resources are far better placed to ride out the tough times….
